Pros +
- Perfect location, good food, easy parking.
- The character, the room, bed was comfortable, wifi plenty good enough for working.
- The room was small but comfortable, the breakfast was plentiful and the staff friendly. The hotel was full of character being an old Tudor coaching inn and perfectly located for the cathedral and city centre
Cons -
- room faced the road, and the old windows don't seal out the noise as well as might be desired. Room was up two flights of steep stairs; tough to carry a suitcase up.
- The car park is small and tight - understandable for such an old and unique property. I was glad I arrived early to get a space! My advice would be not to bring a huge car.
- The bathroom was very small and the shower was not great. The basin was in the bedroom not the bathroom which wasn’t very convenient.

It was historical which we liked
The blinds and the carpets were dirty in the room
The location is excellent, right in the middle of town and walking distance to everything. Having parking is a very big bonus when in the middle of town.
When I arrived and first went to the room it was freezing. I went to the front desk and said "I think the radiator isn't working". The response I got was "yes it is". After a discussion someone went to the room and confirmed that the radiator wasn't working and needed to be bled. I had room 5 and travelling from the USA had a decent amount of luggage. That room is tiny.
Four poster bed, large bathroom
Bathroom overlooked
Location in downtown Saint Albans was excellent. Hotel dated from the 1400s, lots of character. A nice restaurant and a charming little pub on the first floor.
My room was very small, but I knew that, and it was well worth the price
Proximity to everything. Great staff.
No elevator. It’s a very old hotel more than 400yrs old, so we expected no elevator. Part of the charm of the hotel were the low beams - my husband who is 6ft 4 hit his head on the low beams twice.
The staff were very helpful and the location was excellent because I needed to be at the Cathedral and it was 100 meters away
The White Hart is surviving because of its history and its location. Unfortunately my room like the rest of the hotel was badly in need of refurbishment, sympathetic refurbishment to preserve its history. My room though , although clean, had poor quality furnishings, the windows even when closed allowed drafts into the room. The shower cubicle roof was covered in mold and mildew. The whole room needed redecorating. The bed was very lumpy and was obviously very old as the mattress had a hollow where people slept. When I looked for a plug to charge my phone up I discovered an extension lead with 4 sockets on it stuck behind the bedroom radiator, which even though i turned this radiator on it did not work and the towel radiator in the shower room although was working the hotel obviously switched the heating off at night.Needless to say I had a very bad night , I was cold and uncomfortableConsidering the price I paid £124 for 1 night this was poor value for money.I shall not be stopping at this hotel again
Exuding charm and historical romance, this is the real Tudor pub stay experience (albeit with fantastic indoor plumbing) - the walls sloped, the beams were comically low in places, and the floors of the topmost levels were anything but flat. We absolutely loved it! We would stay in this 600year old attic again without hesitation. The whole place was beautiful. As for the room, the beds were comfy and scrupulously clean, the en suite bathroom was spacious and fully equipped. The food in the restaurant was extremely good, and the two course set ended up being very good value.
One word of warning if you are in an attic room - the old Tudor style window panes on the top floor aren't double glazed. It was a bit noisier and got a little bit colder than we had become accustomed to.
Great location, had parking, good breakfast! Shower was very powerful.
Our room was on the top floor, was very warm weekend and the fan in the room didn’t initially work. Asked for replacement at reception to be told the building was very old. We had a significant slope on the floor at the entrance to our room which I don’t think was very safe. The bathroom was tiny. Room was very basic.
Beautiful location, stunning quirky building. Food was nice.
The toilet didn't really flush. Service in the restaurant was slow given how few people were eating there.
Excellent location to visit the cathedral for the International Organ Competition.
We seem to always be allocated the room at the very end of the second floor, perhaps because its the only room that is a twin room. But carrying luggage up and down is quite challenging.
The location was excellent! It was located right across from the main church and very close to many stores, restaurants, and access to Verulamium Park. All the staff were nice and accommodating. There was a charm to how old the building was especially for someone from the United States. The breakfast was good and reasonably priced. The bar in the lobby was cool and the outside of the building was unique.
In general, it was reasonably comfortable for a 2-star hotel. It had a lot of quirks such as the hallway floors and the ceiling of the room being slanted. There was no A/C but there was a fan which worked pretty well for us. The bed was a queen size made up of two single mattresses pushed together. We didn't really mind it, but I wasn't expecting that from the photos.
We always enjoy timbered buildings. This is perhaps the oldest we have stayed. Staff were helpful.
Our room overlooked the beer garden and where people smoked outside. While they were not too late or too rowdy. It was a bit difficult to not overhear every conversation.
We loved the location. Close to everything and the food was good. The staff was incredibly helpful and attended to our every need.
We are tall people and the ceilings and doorways were a bit low for us. However we consider the history of the building as a plus so we didn't mind too much. No lifts and stairs a bit precarious, but it was a fantastic historic property. We visited during the hottest time of the year and it was a bit warm with no AC.
Breakfast. There is a menu from which one chooses a dish which is then Cooked on the spot. This is much better than the usual buffet breakfast with its pre cooked dishes. Also the cooking was excellent, especially the scrambled eggs.
The shower, as the floor was slippery when wet
Loved the age and quirkiness of the building and certainly great for access to the town
Room was very basic although bed small but comfortable
location was good, staff very friendly
in dire need of remodel/repair. The floors are super wobbly and uneven (our entire room had a slant to it). We understand it is a historical house but there are ways to remodel in a guest friendly way. It just seemed neglected.
Very charming old building.
Room was fine and simple, but did not have the charm that the building itself had.
