    Pros +

    • Interior decor in public areas. Quality furniture and beds in bedrooms.Staff friendly and helpfull.
    • view was amazing, beautiful balcony with view over the sea Breakfast was outstanding, great selection, very tasty, exceeded my expectationsDinner in the evening in the restaurant was amazing, the bet food i had in all my three weeks travelling around the uk. Chef did a wonderful job, added to that the restaurant decor and tables was beautiful
    • Location terrific. Staff outstanding. Bar outstanding. Lounge area outstanding and great leather furniture.

    Cons -

    • Shower is mixer taps only and not electric controlled. Toilet paper is always poor quality. TV reception always poor. Windows usually dirty.Coffee machine had no instructions.
    • the downstair public toilet had boogies stuck all over the wall... yuck
    • Carpets in lounge area, bedrooms need a good clean. Bedroom carpet maybe replaced. My daughter’s bathroom terrible! She had her room moved. Our bathroom and her newer room was nice. Looked like newly remodeled. Carpets in hall/ didn’t match! Frayed. They need replaced. Windows need replaced in bedroom. It’s a shame really! Once beautiful high end hotel! Just has not been tended to. Prices could be much higher if hotel was tended to.

Upon arrival, we were upgraded to a seaview room and had just enough time in daylight to see how beautiful it was. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the room beautifully appointed.

Hotel was gorgeous staff always had a lovely smile room was stunning

I am disabled and the hill would have been a struggle for me but I had a car

Everyone was so friendly, welcoming and helpful. My daughter has ceoliac so we had booked room only but after staff were very reassuring and took time to explain the menus etc we decided to add breakfast on.

The bathroom was a little outdated and there were hairs on the bathroom floor. Behind the bedside tables to access the sockets was very dusty.

    The staff, location, interior

Better service in terms of what products are offered, less heat and a slightly more accessible restaurant menu

The room was comfortable but needed a little TLC, Had difficulty opening the windows.

Room furniture needs upgrading plus room could do with a paint touch up.

    9WillPosted on: 9-7-2025

The room was great & food was really nice.Staff was very pleasant and friendly.

We stayed in room 103 & the balcony area to our rhs was very messy & not pleasant to see.

We had a family room in this hotel - great views of the sea from the window, absolutely beautiful. We found the beds to be really comfy, the room was big and spacious, the facilities all working well with hot shower and big bath. The staff were lovely, the hotel is beautiful and we had a great stay, finding it really good value for money. The sheets and furniture felt good quality. It was very quiet and we all had a good sleep.

We read the reviews about the hotel being 'tired' although our room was perfect for us. It looked like the hallways were being renovated and updated and we hope the hotel retains its olde worlde charm. It was a five to ten minute walk along the seafront into Rothesay, fine for us but worth being aware of. Taxi company recommended by the hotel were great.

TOWELS WERE LOVELY AND THICK. GOOD QUALITY TOILET PAPER., HAND WASH, TOILETRIES, ALL SUPPLIED. ALSO VERY GOOD QUALITY. WILL BE RETURNING SOON.

The hotel has a great loch view - definitely the get the loch view room. Has free parking available. Rooms are clean, room decor quite basic but clean and beds are comfy. Nice restaurant/bar area and indoor/outdoor seating. Value for money.

The bathroom could do with some shelves and hooks.

    Size and location

Grand Old Hotel Spacious room with great view of Loch Striven

A little threadbare in places but the new owners are working on it

    5KatalinPosted on: 7-28-2025

Great location, amazing view (sea view room), bed was comfortable and clean. Excellent dinner at the restaurant.

Apart from the restaurant the whole place was dirty and dated. The the bed was comfy and clean but the rest of the room was not cleaned properly, see the photos. Staff at the hotel were courteous but not friendly or nice. Breakfasting area and other communal parts of the hotel were dirty. About 12 car parking spaces for the whole of the hotel (121 rooms!). Shame.

    5JoleenPosted on: 7-25-2025

    The view was nice.

The peeling paint on the door, the toilet that didn't work, the stained toilet seat, the cracked toilet seat and the rolled linoleum flooring in the bathroom, the rusty toilet cleaner holder.I booked this hotel purposefully because I thought it was a classy hotel given the photos and reviews. With the conditions of it, I was very disappointed and wished I had researched it better since this was the only reason we visited the Isle.
