Pros +
- Kaz was terrific and helped us with everything. Seeing I had a cane she took my suitcase upstairs without being askedWe had a tight morning schedule and she had our breakfast ready promptly at 9 so we go make our lakes tour oneday and our train the next. When asked booking.com was discouraging about this request and sent me a curt email
- Hostess was kind, attentive and most helpful. The Elleray is very convenient to the Windermere train station, to busses connecting other Lake District locations, and to the Mountain Goat tours departure. The pub seemed quite popular with an attractive menu.
- Location, friendly staff, nice pub and terrace, charming
Cons -
- Everything
- The coil spring mattress was not comfortable, hope it is replaced soon. Google Maps shows The Elleray as a 4-star, handicap accessible hotel - it is neither, as the stairs up to the rooms are narrow and winding, and the accommodations, while nice and serviceable, were not high-end. The Elleray is dog-friendly, which was a bit of an issue for those with allergies.
- Rooms a little shabby, shower not draining very well, toilet seat moves, wallpaper coming off in places

Super friendly and kind staff. Excellent location and stay. We are so thankful to the kind staff that have posted a wallet we left at the property, and covered the cost! above and beyond and we hope to visit again soon.
It was a lovely and inviting place. We felt a nice sense of comfort with the staff and owners. The whole first floor was the pub and eating area. Very comfortable there plus we had nice enough weather to use the beer garden. Our room was quite spacious and very comfortable. And the location of the Elleray was just steps away from the station. All in all, a great stay. Thank you Cas and Tom
The staff were very nice and friendlyThe bed was very comfortableBreakfast was very good
There were no large towels to get dry only hand towelsThere was no decaf coffee in the roomThere was alot of noise till one in the morning from the bar downstairs
Clean, comfortable room. Staff were helpful and friendly.
I am afraid to say breakfast was a little disorganised. I believe this was exceptional circumstances as the chef had rung in sick. Saying this everything was well cooked and tasty.
Staff friendly. Breakfast lovely. Brilliant location.
Small double bed was very small. Didn't sleep well. carpet and skirting needed a proper clean. Dust and cobwebs.
Lovely pub in a great location with friendly staff. Rooms were spacious and clean and the food was fantastic. Only negat
Both the Full English and a small breakfast were excellent!
It’s apparent the business in under newer ownership and they are upgrading an older property. They are doing well.
Location and price. Staff very helpful and friendly
Getting a bit dated.
The hotel’s fantastic location near the rail and bus stations made traveling to other towns in the Lake District incredibly convenient. We had informed the hotel of our vegan preference when booking, and to our delight, the vegan breakfast exceeded our expectations—it was of outstanding quality and absolutely delicious! The hotel's restaurant also offered a tasty and great-value vegan dish, which we enjoyed so much that we dined there three times during our six-night stay. We are truly grateful for such a wonderful experience. (The facilities matched exactly what was shown in the photos on the website. I was pleasantly surprised by our vegan dining experience, so I’ve attached the photo to share it!)
The hotel has a unique setup without a traditional front desk. Upon entering, we found a charming bar and restaurant. We took a few minutes to explore the hotel, and when we spoke to the host at the bar, the check-in process was quick and easy.
Ideal location for our weekend trip. We stopped elsewhere (Bowness) en-route for lunch and a wander then parked at the train station which is a 2min walk from the hotel. Be aware the parking for overnight needs to be paid as 2 days. We thought 1 day would be 24hrs but it appears not! Checked in smoothly. The room was ideal and had everything we needed for 2 people. Sat in the downstairs bar area in the evening which was reassuringly busy but not rowdy, felt very much like a local with no large groups that you might have expected at weekends from tourists etc... Good music but not too loud, got served quickly and found a nice spot to sit near the fireplace. Ordered soup which was delicious and home made. Had a good undisturbed sleep and fast fabulous service for breakfast which was all you could ask for. I would definitely stay here again. Travelled with a friend for a girly weekend away. We planned to take a good walk on the Sunday morning and discovered the start and end point for the Orrest Head walk it just over the road from the train station too. Perfect!
There was really loud regular banging that sounded like a heavy slamming door that went on constantly in the later afternoon/early evening when we were trying to have a nap. It probably was a fire door which makes sense and it was during the daytime so can't really complain but it was very distracting and very frequent. It didn't disturb me at the night time thankfully.
There was no reception, you have to go to the bar to check-in, there was two staff on and they were serving upon my arrival. When the bartender had finished serving, the young man showed us to our room. He was pleasant and polite and explained the procedure with the key for the main door and were breakfast would be served.
The room did not reflect the pictures shown on the web site prior to booking. The room was very different, the furniture was shoddy, dirty carpets, it was cold, noisy and doors constantly banging downstairs. No tea/coffee making facilities, no chocolate/cookies as advertised. The communal areas from the entrance of The Elleray to the bedroom room on the first floor were unwelcoming and dirty. I was embarrassed to take my friend there and hence the reason why we did not stay. We were both very disappointed.
Nice modern rooms, good location, a few little bars around the area. Need to walk or taxi down to the lake for more bars and restaurants. Staff were friendly but non around in the morning to check out so just left the key on the bar area
Love how central It is
To warm in the room couldn't turn the heating down bed was really comfortable and slept OK was just to hot and had the window open all night
Lovely place. Bar area very welcoming.Rooms were clean and spacious.Excellent service at breakfast. The full English was delicious
Lovely rooms in a cosy pub. The pub was busy, locals and residents but it was a really nice atmosphere. Rooms are clean and provided a good nights sleep. Breakfast was to order and a good standard. Would definitely stay again
Easy access & in a reasonable location. Breakfast was excellent and plentiful
Parking in the area is very awkward, unless you want to pay high prices in the local car parks, rooms were far too hot, not too sure being closed on a Thursday is a good idea, Tuesday may be.
