About
The YHA Ambleside sits on the shores of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. It offers a range of budget accommodations and a café serving local food. After being refurbished, the property now features newly decorated rooms, a new restaurant and a decked terrace with lake views. Some bedrooms have views across both the lake and the Langdale Pikes. This hostel offers private rooms with en-suite or allocated shared bathrooms.. The bar offers a range of local ales and there is a large garden. There are many walking and cycling routes surrounding YHA Ambleside, and there is a bike store on site. A variety of watersports can be enjoyed on the lake. Ambleside village is a 10-minute walk from the YHA hostel. It has a selection of quaint tea rooms, artisan shops and country pubs. The majority of rooms contain bunk beds. Breakfast is available for an additional charge. This car park is controlled by an ANPR parking system. Upon arrival, you will need to validate your presence by entering your car's registration number at reception. Charges apply though overnight guests benefit from a discounted rate of £5 per vehicle for 24 hours. To claim these rates, please notify reception once you've parked. If this is full, there is limited on-street parking in front of the pier and on Lake Road (three-minute walk). There is also a pay and display car park two minutes' walk from the hostel on Borrans Road.

Pros +
- Location in Ambleside is good, close to other pubs. Nice that is has it's own bar.
- Second time going to the Ambleside and the hostel is great, kitchen is looked after, rooms are great and you can relax in different areas
- The location was really good especially the view outside of the accommodation.
Cons -
- Carpark was full, as were other options. Clothes didn't dry in drying room as too full. Chairs in bar/lounge area all uncomfortable after a long day walking. Would be nice to introduce some comfort to the stay.
- The cleanliness was not good enough. Toilets were very small and very inconvenient to use. Also the bed height was small I’m 6’1” and I couldn’t sleep properly because of the small size of the bed.
- Just needs slightly updating for the interior. Could see wallpaper that had been half ripped off one wall and also could see paint in walls that they must of touched up but in the wrong colour .

Loved that this yha had the option of 1 bunk bed in a room, so me and my friend had a room to ourself which was nice, staff were lovely and showers and toilets were clean

Super location, right at lakeside and not far from the town centre.Reasonably priced. Fair amount of parking at the hostel. Nice cafe/bar with relaxed atmosphere and good menu. Friendly, helpful staff at reception. Happy to give information regarding local sights, bus timetables etc.
Bed was very uncomfortable. Very thin mattress on metal bed frame.Bedroom was very basic... no drinking glass, no pictures on wall. Noises from radiator, pipes etc. at night. Kitchen area small for the number of guests. Difficult to even make a piece of toast. Dining areas rather dull. Poor lighting and no pictures on walls.
Location and view
Not enough room on a carpark
We loved our lake-view room. The calm atmosphere and the eagle by the lake made our stay relaxing and peaceful.
Lovely views and facilities, room was small but very nice! Kitchen and dinning room lovely. Had food at the restaurant which was average but okay. Very good stay overall!
Great location to explore the Lakes, loads of options for food and drink, and a very well equipped self-catering kitchen
Stayed in a shared dorm, so you have to accept that people will make noise, move around, and snore, but that's all part of the deal.
Staff very approachable and friendly, great food and drink at the bar
Showers very unclean and unsanitary
I stayed there for 3 nights with my mate, we were meant to be camping but due to weather conditions we had to stay somewhere. We found this on booking.com, we are very glad we found it the price was great, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the facilities were great as well and a great central location for a lot of the mountains as we did Helvellyn and Skiddaw. I will definitely be coming back and I 100% recommend to anyone who wants a well priced stay in the central lakes.
Staff, location, kitchen, beds
WC and showers could have more space
Great location, stunning views. Friendly staff.
Waited 15 mins to be checked in. Other than that excellent stay
Friendly staff, comfy beds, good to have a restaurant on site, plenty of places to sit with good views of the lake
Feel like it was missing some basics for a shared hostel for example, there was only a mirror/basin in the room for cleaning teeth etc. which isn't ideal if you're up early and everyone in the room is sleeping. Only other option was the bathroom but they were very compact
All of it. Location, the lake view, the atmosphere, the staff. All excellent
Great location overlooking Lake Windermere. Beautiful to sit in the lounge area looking out over the lake
Great location and value for money
Limited parking and purchased breakfast, served cold
Beautiful location with stunning views across Windermere. Facilities looked to be very good and a 15 minute walk into Ambleside centre.
On arriving we found a parking spot. I checked the exact location to ensure there was ample room for vehicles to pass as the car park was small. I also walked around the car and space ensuring duediligence. My partner and I then walked into the centre for our new years meal and night out. Approx 15 to 20 mins walk. Sitting down imfornthe meal I seen I had a missed call, so listened to my voicemail. It was a member of staff saying I needed to move my car immediately or I'd be fined as it was a staff parking spot. My wife rang back as I was at the bar awaiting drinks. They told her the same after getting through even though she explained there were no notices in our adjacent to the parking spot telling us it was staff parking only.We left the restaurant and I moved our car, resulting in us paying £9.45 in a long stay car park. We also discontinued our new years eve night out as we were not in the mood to walk back into thr centre, another 40 minute round journey. We were in our room by 10pm, having planned a new years night out in Ambleside. The experience completely ruined our New Year.
