    Pros +

    • Beautiful old fashioned front and reception with modern and stylish rooms
    • Location in the town, facilities in the hotel, comfort of the bedroom, and quality of the breakfast.
    • The history and the hotel itself, excellent base to travel locally from

    Cons -

    • The staff whilst pleasant lacked experience, on Valentines night our meal was somewhat spoilt by a fillet of beef not steak arriving rare, we weren’t asked how we liked it cooked by the waitress and the chef didn’t have it checked, poor attention to detail.
    • 3 couples stayed and When we arrived we all met for a drink and both rooms at the front the hotel were empty but every table was not cleaned so had to do this ourselves- it wasn't busy either so would expect staff to clear tables
    • The hotel is very tired and the breakfast was disappointing. The room was comfortable but the wardrobe was scruffy and noisy to open it.At breakfast the pots that the fruit were served in were all chipped and had a big crack down one side. The poached egg was raw inside.

The outside appearance of the hotel is fantastic and the old stained glass and original features are great.

Very pleasant experience, exceeding our expectations. A good mixture of old charm and modern conveniences. Very helpful and friendly staff. Enjoyed the fruit platter in the room on arrival, a very nice surprise. Breakfast was very good. The restaurant had a nice ambiance.

Parking was a bit tight - needed a 53-point turn to get out!

    Lovely staff. Good location.

Room very small. Pillows uncomfortable. Could do with a refurb.

    8DavidPosted on: 2-13-2026

I liked that the hotel was clean and tidy, the shower and bed were very comfortable and queries were quickly addressed. The hotel receptionist called Louise was very welcoming and helpful and deserving of a mention for her warmth and friendliness.

The meals were a bit on the expensive side and we had to wait a long time to eat.

The whole building is beautiful and has a wonderful feeling about it. Our room was perfect for us and the bed exceptionally comfortable and we appreciated being upgraded. Everyone working here are so friendly and helpful.

    Can't think of anything.

Enjoyable stay excellent food in restaurant. Helpful staff

Room to warm mainly due to memory mattress.

I liked that our luggage was held in a locked room. I appreciated that the room rate was adjusted (down) to match what I had seen on the website when booking the stay. I'm glad there was a rotating fan in the room.

When I asked for a washcloth, none were available, only hand towels. I also didn't expect so many stairs (both up and down) to get to the room after using the lift, as I had a bum knee. It was kind of funny that the two twin beds only had about 3 inches between them, but it was ok as they felt separate.

Location and the period appearance. Comfortable Bed. Pleasant overall staff.

The bar could be better socked for a 4star hotel . Could not make strawberry mojito. Only Kraken and Captain Morgan dark rums. This is minor.

    An historic hotel with character.

The radiator in our room wasn't working, and dinner was expensive.

    Room was double booked by...

The hotel had somehow on their system moved our booking a day forward so when we arrived late afternoon we were told that our booking was for the day before and they had no rooms available. We had evidence from booking .com and email from the hotel that proved we were there on the right day. They did find a basic room for us 15 minutes walk away disappointing as we were part of a group of friends all planning on staying in same hotel. We were given a full refund and a brief verbal apology.

    8MartinPosted on: 1-3-2026

The historic atmosphere of the hotel, but with a lift as I'm disabled. Staff were very friendly and polite

Both front lounges were cold, no fire litThe bar meal wasnt great, was below average, frozen chips undercooked. Cold plates

Old building, location, staff, log fire. Room was great, spacious, comfortable and clean.

Breakfast selection was poor. Basic continental selection.

    7IanPosted on: 1-2-2026

It was a lovely historical building full of character and close to the town centre.

The restaurant food was very poor.

    10LisaPosted on: 1-1-2026
