Pros +
- A cosy, welcoming pub hotel with good food and comfortable, quiet bedrooms. We'd love to have experienced the garden area but were visiting in winter.
- It was charming, friendly and helpful staff, lovely food and drinks.
- Lovely location, very attractive old building, the bed sheets were clean and breakfast was very good
Cons -
- A few cobwebs in the rooms, which actually seems very common in English hotels. We are not sure why places can't attend to these basic things to optimise the cleanliness and appearance of rooms. The staff were polite but not brilliant at customer service and the TV in the room needs updating so it can offer the latest apps to enable linking with smart phones. For example we couldn't even connect to YouTube to enjoy some of our shows, which would have been ideal.
- The room was very dirty, old cobwebs and dirt everywhere that the rudimentary dust and vacuum hadn't collected. The bathroom was filthy behind the toilet, the shower was poor with the shower curtain missing many hooks, and the radiator didn't work. The whole room is very tired and probably needed and uplift many years ago. Terribly over priced for what is the worst hotel room I've ever stayed in.
- Bathroom was tired in decor and needs to be updated and cleaned more. Dust in various parts of the bathroom. When we arrived it was particularly cold and no heating had been put on in the room.

Old style property with friendly staff
Bathroom was tired in decor and needs to be updated and cleaned more. Dust in various parts of the bathroom. When we arrived it was particularly cold and no heating had been put on in the room.
the breakfast was excellent. The full Yorkshire ,and in particular the black pudding and fried bread ,was verytasty. The cricketers' bar, where we could eat with the dog, was atmospheric. It felt that we were staying in a timewarp, but that was part of the hotel's attraction to us.
it would have been useful to have had available, printed copies of local dog walks from the village. Instead the proprietor offered to draw , from memory, a pencil sketch of a walk from the hotel and back., which we gratefullyaccepted.
Wonderful welcome from Manager Tony for return visit
There were some noisy inconsiderate guests in the lounge
i stay twice a year for the location and the friendly syaff,
needs abit updating
The staff were good
The hotel is desperately tired and scruffy and in a time warp.We understand it is closing in January for several years for a complete revamp and not before time
The food was good.
Room was very tired and bathroom was grubby and outdated.Room was nothing like the photos on the website. Was disappointed to read reviews of others who had booked via Booking.com seemed to get poor rooms.
Staff couldn’t have been more hospitable. It was pouring down but I was helped by the host to find my cottage across the road and everything explained to me. Room was very comfortable and well heated. I was travelling with more than one dog and that was no problem at all for them. Really enjoyed my stay and went across to the main hotel for evening meal. I had to leave early before breakfast but they made me a sandwich for the journey.
Location lovely friendly staff great breakfast
Decent to the bathroom and slightly dated facilities
Excellent hosts, really helpful and thoughtful Very good breakfast Great location, walks from the doorRelaxed atmosphereGreat wine after recommendation by host!
The location and especially the staff.
The room and the evening meal; the room was very tired’ small and dirty; the starter was lovely but both main meals were poor and very poor value for money.
excellent apart from the room....
Room had 0nly a few hangers on a on a wall mounted hook. No drawers or wardrobe and no mirror with a light.
The staff were great. It had parking. And was in a decent location for what we wanted. Once upon a time this would have been a grand old dame of a hotel.
Quite how others are giving high scores for this place is baffling. To say the rooms are dated and tired is an understatement. The cleaning of the rooms is sloppy. The fire door wouldn't close properly. The window was jammed open with a piece of wood. The overhead light was broken. The bathroom light had more dead flies in it than a butchers flykiller. The skylights more cobwebs than a Halloween party. The bedroom door looked like it had its hinges locked off. The mattress was as old as Gandalf. And for £90 for a room for a night off season and mid week is just eye watering for what is offered.
Beautiful historic building nestled in the heart of a little village. Perfect for a quiet night away.
Easy to find. Staff very friendly and helpful. Room comfortable and clean and great to have tea, coffee etc in the room.
No adverse comments.
Staff friendly and helpful. Nothing too much trouble.
Dogs in the dining roomRoom seemed tired…
Traditional country hotel in the best ways. Lovely food with daily changes to the menu. Great wine list. Cosy bar. Good breakfast. Great service. In a lovely village in a very pretty area. Lots to do nearby.
Could do with a little maintenance in places but still enjoyed our stay.
Lovely location set in a picturesque village. Large quiet comfortable room with a snuggly bed. Breakfast was good although portion sizes a little on the small size.
Cable to kettle was too short so had to put the kettle on the floor to boil for cup of tea, rather dangerous. No blinds at bedroom window so could be seen by the cottage opposite, so had to close the curtains in daylight.
