About

Located in Devizes’ town center, The Bear is within 656 feet of shops and restaurants. Locally sourced produce is served in both the relaxed Bear Grills Bistro. Free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV feature in each room. Ales brewed 492 feet away are delivered by horse and cart to The Bear Hotel and are served in its cozy bars. Live music is played weekly in the soundproofed, 14th-century cellar bar at The Bear Hotel. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside and pretty canalside strolls can be enjoyed just 5 minutes’ walk away, along the Kennet and Avon Canal. Free private parking is provided. With blue paneled walls and a large open-fire, the bistro offers freshly made burgers, char-grilled steaks and vegetarian dishes, as well as a varied children’s menu.

    Pros +

    • Cheerful, attentive staff, very good food, full of atmosphere. The room had plenty of space and was very clean. Old fashioned decor but they're what I would expect. It has everything we need and the bed was comfortable.
    • This is an old establishment dating back to the 1500's and still standing. Lovely compact room with toilet and shower. Bed was comfy. I had a decent sleep. Room 24 not much of a view but that doesn't matter because I was only using the room to store my stuff and sleep in. I spent the whole day around Devizes. The room was quiet, no outside noises. The hotel is situated right in the centre with the bus stops for all buses to Swindon and Chippenham right outside.Full English breakfast was top notch.I will stay here again next time I am in the area.
    • Superb Saturday lunch in the bistro.Very comfortable bed in my quiet top floor single room. Good fluffy towels. Large full length fitted wardrobe containing the fold out suitcase stand.

    Cons -

    • Would be nice to have a window that opened. Plumbing a bit slow. Both are to be expected, given the age and history of the hotel
    • Nothing to report.
    • A long wait to place my cooked food order at breakfast on Sunday. The single waitress couldn't cope with the demand of everyone turning up within the last three quarters of an hour of breakfast service. Also all the croissants/pastries and already gone as had almost all the fruit. There was no restocking. However, when it arrived my scrambled eggs with tomatoes and mushrooms were excellent.

Had a lovely stay here. I got the last room available which was a single room on the second floor. It was quiet, comfortable and not too small. Bathroom was nice, good hot shower. Breakfast room was crowded when I arrived, and hot food is ordered from the menu rather than buffet -- but I was seated quickly, received coffee quickly and received a very nice cooked breakfast quickly. Friendly service. Nice staff at the bar in the hotel as well, and generally a great atmosphere here. Room was well equipped with kettle, iron etc. Plenty of sockets. Nice courtyard/rooftop view.

I was a bit cold when I went to bed as heating had been off for quite a while and it's an old building - but bedding was nice and warm and bed comfortable so I slept well!

Lovely central hotel. Very good for events in the town and for shopping. Great breakfast and nice clean rooms.

Our heating didn't work. There was a little electric fan heater which we used but it was nosey so at night we turned it off and didn't sleep great because we were cold

A lovely warm welcome with real log fires on a cold winters night. A traditional, pretty, historical, English country town hotel. Exceptionally clean room and bathroom, crisp white bedding and comfortable bed.Very helpful and good staff.

The lighting in the bedroom corridors was very harsh and bright and perhaps could be a little warmer.

Excellent location and plentiful parking. Good food and excellent breakfast.

Bathroom whilst clean could probably do with updating.

    8PhilPosted on: 1-25-2026

Nice staff, comfortable room, value fir money. Includes parking. Big plus in that town.,

View wasn’t great but for the reasonable price I didn’t care. It had curtains.

Good size pleasant room especially for a single. Staff all helpful and friendlyLovely breakfastNice atmosphere. The bar was busy (with coffees I think!) for a midweek morning.

Decor a bit dated. Maybe needed redecorating but all clean and comfortable.

Fairly quiet area, full of historic information. Food very good staff very good especially charlie and clare who rescued us when the lift broke down!

Reliable lift as i had recently had a knee replacement, i did manage though, we were in room ten which has a huge step from the bedroom to the bathroom, needs two steps if possible
