About
Set within its own picturesque grounds, this award-winning former coaching inn, dating back in parts to 1430, provides traditional accommodations and a luxurious spa in the historic Sussex market town of Midhurst. The Spread Eagle Hotel still retains many of its original features, including sloping floors, inglenook fireplaces and oak beams. The award-winning restaurant also features a beautiful stained glass window. In contrast to the historic aspects of the hotel, the Spread Eagle offers a modern spa, complete with an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room and gym. Alternatively you can indulge with a personalized beauty treatment.

- Historic and interesting. Room was lovely and the bed was very comfortable. Facilities were excellent, except the shower was quite difficult to operate. Milk for morning tea was not provided.
- Everything, especially the spa. Pool was nice and warm.
- We stayed at the Spread Eagle as part of spa treat and were not disappointed. Parking was very easy as they have a large car park and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Room was very clean and comfortable. Very quiet as well. Evening meal was very nice and a good choice of wine.
Cons -
- The spa and hotel lounges were extremely well kept but, apart from the wonderful manageress, the staff seemed distant and disinterested. Bar staff ignored previous customers’ used crockery on our table, which was not good. Due to miscommunication between the serving staff my wife’s breakfast arrived fully 15 minutes after mine, and was nearly cold. A fresh pot of tea also failed to materialise. The evening meal was fantastic however and the service there was much better.
- Ihave a minor thing. The table knives were not at all sharp and difficult to use. Also I had a lot of stairs to climb to my room there could ha ve been a woarning about this on the booking siye. I have a replacement hip.

Cosy, comfortable and really good value considering spa included. Lovely spa and it felt very relaxed that you could stay and use it the next day after checking out. Nice touch having tea, coffee and biscuits in room. Some of the staff were extremely helpful and friendly, especially at reception and the guy welcoming you at breakfast. It was really atmospheric sitting in the lounge by the fire at night with rain hammering at the windows outside.
The spa changing facilities were quite dirty and the showers were cold. Bit of a small bed but we did go for the “cosy” room!
Not really anything to shout about. Bed was comfy, staff in the spa were friendly
Spa was really basic, wouldn’t recommend at all. Day staff on hotel reception weren’t very friendly. Hotel rooms very basic & really need updating. Breakfast also needs updating. Everything very old school
Really enjoyed the breakfast. All the attention to details. The room was lovely. The location of the hotel is good situated just off the main street but on a quiet road. The spa was very nice too.
The location and the age of the building.
I just felt that there should be loungers in the spa as we could not sit down.
Lovely room. Clean and very comfortable. Relaxed atmosphere throughout the hotel

The spa was really lovely and we were delighted to be able to use it until 1pm on our check out day. The room was cute and cosy and the bed was really comfortable, and the breakfast was tasty with plenty of choice.
Unfortunately the hot tub was closed during our visit and we weren't told in advance, but the rest of the spa made up for it!
Great massage and facial with lovely sweet pool for children. Big room. Nice feeling to the place.
It did feel a little dated and not that clean. Service at breakfast was slow which was a shame as the food was nice but meant we were late for treatment. Waited ages to get a drink at the bar and then there wasn’t anywhere to sit so ended up drinking in the room! Stayed much nicer places for much less money.
Beautiful building. Bedroom cosy and warm. Very comfortable. Spa fantastic. Great to have a good amount of time there. Dinner was really fabulous
Nothing. All good
Lovely old building just off the church square. Pleasant spa & pool. Good food. Pleasant staff. Pleasant bedrooms. Lovely ancient lounge with open fires.
Breakfast was a little chaotic but I accept it was a busy day (New Year’s Day). Slightly under-staffed at breakfast resulting in a cold cooked breakfast while waiting for toast.
Lovely 15th century spa hotel. We had a great 4 poster bed and the bathroom was huge. The spa and pool facilities were great - and the best thing is that dogs can stay as well! The village of Midhurst is also a nice little place. We had a great stay.
It would have been nice if the pool and gym opened before breakfast.
Location first class. Breakfast reception lady bright and breezy just what is required first thing in the morning
Breakfast it's self could have been better but was exceptable. Service staff very pleasant. Hope this is helpful. I really enjoyed my stay the wedding of my godson was really faultless already stated
food , room.
spa pool was dirty - green mould on tiles and area around. hot tub not working . black mould in changing rooms
i found the hotel to be 100 percent fantastic quality room amazing cleanlist 100 gowns towels sheets smell so fresh .staff very welcomig helpful courtous breakfast out standing location great . value for money exceptainal .quite calm . well presented nothing was to much trouble for staff . i have stayed in many hotels in uk and australia and this hotel is the best i have ever stayed in .i will defo stay here again worth every penny . comfotable friendly
The staff were excellent, my wife has Parkinson’s and they went the extra mile to ensure she had a good stay.
Hotel is very nicely decorated, Staff is efficient, and very friendly. All was easy. Dinner was excellent and served promptly despite the dining room being super busy. Breakfast was a real treat! All good with the extra bonus of a gym, a sauna and a pool.
Pillows are a bit too hard for our taste! but that's all, so not much to complain about.
Willingness of the staff to go the extra mile and reserve a parking space. Staff paying attention to our needs and trying to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Staff was exceptionally polite.
The only option for dinner (unlike for lunch) was to have a three-course dinner for an astronomical price. Why is it not possible to have a single meal for 15-20 pounds?
Spa was clean and up to a good temperature. The building is seeped in history! Great breakfast too!!
