About

The Bear of Rodborough is located on Rodborough Common within the acres of beautiful National Trust land where cows roam free each summer. Originally built in the 17th Century, this former coaching inn provides a warm welcome for all, including dogs who will feel right at home in our country house bedrooms with plenty of walks to enjoy. Whether staying in the main house or country house, all bedrooms are homely and charming and many boast spectacular views over the Cotswolds and beyond. The Library Restaurant is located in the oldest part of the building and serves AA Rosette-awarded dishes in a relaxing environment. Meanwhile, the Bear Bar is typically English with real ales on draft and a more casual food offering. Step outside and you’ll also find the Pavilion Garden Bar, where food and drink can be enjoyed alongside the fun additions of popcorn, slushies, table tennis, and table football!

    Pros +

    • Nice comfortable room and surroundings
    • The warm feeling of the hotel was exactly what we needed for a winter break. The hotel is beautiful and the cleanliness was perfect!
    • I have arthritis so was limping up to the reception, the lady behind reception pointed out that my room had a shower over the bath. She kindly upgraded me to a room with a shower room. I was very pleased with that. The breakfast is superb, quick well cooked and great surroundings.I ate form the bar menus each night - beef cheeks (superb) - best fish and chips for ages. All staff high level of competence and skills.

    Cons -

    • Food was overpriced for the quality and adding a service charge without prior notice is not the wayRoom although old in years needs more 3 pin sockets
    • There is nothing I did not like about the property, however a small comment is to be made regarding corrections during dining. The food was delicious and the service was high standard!! However, an intolerance to onion and garlic was mentioned when booking a dinner reservation and was repeated during the order of food however, there was still onion in the salad. This is the only concern.
    • Parking and signage from parking for new guests was confusing and difficult to get back and forth to.

We spent part of our honeymoon in the Cotswolds and had a fantastic stay at the Bear. Nicki at the front desk was exceptional and simply a lovely person - welcoming, helpful, and a joy to talk to. The hotel and grounds were beautiful and ideally located at the foot of the common. Recommend including breakfast with your stay. Great value, would absolutely come back.

Could have used a small refrigerator in the room for drinks and keeping sandwich ingredients for lunches to take on excursions in the Cotswolds, but it was a minor issue.

    Clean, everything you needed.

Walk in shower instead of bath shower.

    8ArthurPosted on: 1-14-2026

The staff were lovely and the hotel was gorgeous

The location is quite remote and the layout of the hotel is quite confusing, it’s easy to get lost looking for reception etc

Food was overall very nice yet pricey. Liked the freshly cooked breakfast. Beds were very comfy.

Nigh noise caused by some deliveries to the premises. At second night this caused serious sleep disruption between 4.30 and 5.30am with constant door banging and dropping very heavy items below my room. When I addressed it with reception asking if next time should have room away from this noise, would have wished they’d offered a tiny gesture for a very short time of sleep.

The location was excellent. I spent one night as I was attending a family party. I understand that dogs are welcome to will definitely return with my pets.

The shower water pressure was very weak.

A great location with expansive Cotswold views from all aspects.Characterful interior and decor that is respectful of the buildings’ period.Ample parking and good access.

There was nothing I didn’t like.

Room was good, lovely bed. Staff were lovely throughout. Food quality was excellent.

Breakfast was understaffed - Simple things like having to ask for sauce after the breakfast has been delivered (have it available for self serve would have solved this). Have water available, again to save staff running around.

Lovely breakfasts and beautiful hotel. Ideal location for us.

Very noisy rooms. People talking loudly at night, slamming doors, noise from tvs. People walking around late at night in rooms above us. Dogs barking and children screaming in the annexe room. Based on this we would probably not stay here again.

    9PhilippaPosted on: 12-23-2025

The room was well appointed warm and spotless

Food was quite pricey. Would have been nice to have a bar menu.

    10GaryPosted on: 12-18-2025

The evening meal in the restaurant was first class, staff throughout the hotel we friendly and attentive , beautiful ambience and atmosphere in the bar area. Beautiful views from our room.

Bed was a little on the firm side.

The views, the breakfast and the bed

Just the low water flow rare in the shower, but everything was fine

    8PhilomenaPosted on: 12-11-2025

All staff helpful, friendly yet professional. Cosy room, clean, good towels and toiletries. Great breakfast and location.

Climbing 3 flights of stairs to our roo. Next time I will ask to be allocated a room on a lower floor. The positive about a room on the 3rd floor is that the view is spectacular.

Beautiful location, beautiful food, beautiful building, lovely staff.

My only complaint it almost silly - but the lighting in the dining room wasn't great. And why were all of the light bulbs different shades of white?Small details effect the ambience.

    9BronwenPosted on: 12-6-2025

Characterful building with cosy public rooms and a great location on the common. Very friendly, helpful staff. Great views.

The bathroom was a little dated - in particular the taps and the combined bathtub/shower - which was surprising compared to the rest of the furnishings.

    Comfortable room

Nothing open to hav3 food drink, road works blocked footpath to ,ain entrance gate #9 walking around the longvway with my case ,

    8AnnePosted on: 12-5-2025

Room was clean and comfortable, a quiet aspect. Toiletries were Molton Brown, lots of hot water for a bath and plenty of towels. Breakfast was very good, a varied menu of both hot and cold plates and good service.

The one gripe was check in, we waited a good 10 mins for the lady on reception to check in. She was busy showing other guests around the hotel. Had hoped another member of staff could have stepped in but unfortunately not.
