Pros +
- The room was very comfortable, there could be more attention to detail with the cleaning, limescale marks in the toilet and on the shower, dust to the lamp shades over the bed, cobwebs I the curtains, staff in bar area are very polite
- I loved the facilities, the pool, sauna and stem room was lovely, the jacuzzi wasn’t working .
- Quiet clean comfortable and ideal location as we were attending a funeral in Earls Colne at 10.30 am
Cons -
- Staff at reception most are welcoming, some carry on their conversations, jacuzzi not working,
- The bed wasn’t made, dirty toilet, the wardrobe was full off thick dust (we have photos of proof), dirty towels, no tv remote, which did get put in our room when asked but then we had no internet in the room and tv didn’t work. We complained at the reception and they changed our room from no6 to no28. Room 28 that we moved to on Monday , was second hand as the people that had stayed in that room before had their towels still in the bath tub, crumbs in bed and unmade which was a clear indication we had been moved to a room that hadn’t even been clean yet just so that we could watch tv. Absolute nightmare of a stay. The reception staff weren’t even shocked, there was one particular female member of staff behind the desk working when we complained Monday night who couldn’t care less, she wasn’t even interested in the photos we showed, when we returned to the reception after the 10 minutes to see if they had a room we could move to, she had already locked the reception door and left jobs to the night porter who was brilliant and couldn’t do enough for us. He was clearly unaware of the state of the room we had been put in. Absolutely discussed in this hotel and will never stay again
- Nothing . We didn’t use the facilities so can’t comment on them.

It was quiet for what I wanted. Comfortable (not the pillows)
It is far from all amenities when one doesn’t have a car. The room also never had a fridge or water in the room.
Passable
Noise at night from people above impacted sleep No air con - room too hot. No taxi service available - some numbers provided were not working.
comfy and clean room ...good food in restaurant
leisure facilities very basic ...jacuzzi far to hot and dirty in the bottom
A good Hotel but Cleaning everywhere was bad, Not sure if its a staffing or management issue but it needs addressing. \dust on \kettles says a lot, Used Glasses on a Stairwell there for 2 days. Grubby everywhere.
Bar, Food, Staff, were Great.
Clean and comfortable
Had to pay so much extra to play tennis
The staff were so kind and helpful, we needed to check out the room for my frail, elderly mother, and Rebecca showed us the facilities to put our minds at rest. We were also upgraded to a newly refurbished room after my partner mentioned the difficulty I had in climbing in and out of the bath, ( I have hip problems ) as our room had not yet been refurbished. The restaurant staff were also kind and helpful, so I could get meals to my mother, as her mobility is so compromised.
Room service would have been helpful, but the staff made it easy for me to take food to my mother.
The location was nice and parking facilities were great.
The bathroom wasn’t very practical. The bed was not comfortable for us.
Room was nice and spacious
Restaurant was closed and we wasn’t informed
This is the second time we've stayed at The Essex and would highly recommend it. The room and breakfast are both great. What we like the most is the arrange of facilities available for families.
The tennis rackets we borrowed were awful. The handle was hanging off. Just a recommendation would be to have a couple of pool tables or table tennis tables for the family to play on.
Gym / Spa facilities
Basic and date features for price, upstairs bar lacking, no room service available, lack of luxury for price point.
Awful
Awful service. Not provided information properly regards night porter. Loud music playing during the late evening early morning. Room was full off lady bugs.Room was dirty.Customer service awful when requested a refund for our stay due to the above issues and more.Would NOT recommend
Room was comfortable. Staff very friendly. Car parking available.
Room lacked some basics e,g, no bin in bathroom, no glass in room, no extra toilet rolls. Access to cafe and bar was difficult on Saturday due to only access after 8pm through private party area which said no access on door. Only cold drinks available were the six cans of Pepsi in the machine in rooms entrance.
The room I had was very nice, clean. Super spacious. Very happy with it overall.
Checking in process. Myself and my friend were trying to check in so we can get ready for our Christmas Party event and we were completely ignored, all staff members at reception looked at us and didn't acknowledge us. We then stated we are trying to check-in and then just responded with "ok" someone finally processed what we said and did our check-in. Wasn't very welcoming. Not sure if they were having an off day.
The facilities were good and the staff friendly and helpful
The noise until 3.30 am the cold showers in the changing rooms and the dirty room
Swimming pool sauna steam facilities was good
Location too far
Friendly helpful staff, great gym, spa and pool facilities, lovely massage
Maybe it was just the Disability Access room but the room was tired and dated, poorly maintained and not particularly clean, tv and hairdryer didn’t work and no hot water in sink
The room was good, the spa was great, the staff were excellent.
The noise coming from the next room, through the adjoining door.
