About
Dating back to the 16th century, this former coaching inn rests in the heart of the picturesque and historic Lewes. The The White Hart - A Heartwood Inn offers modern facilities, while keeping its old world charm. Rich with history, the hotel is known as the cradle of American Independence, where Thomas Paine forged his radical policies in the debating club of the old inn. His pamphlet "Common Sense" sold half a million copies in 1776 and inspired the Declaration of Independence, signed later that year. Wood paneling, oak beams and open fireplaces all create a welcoming atmosphere. The The White Hart - A Heartwood Inn has been substantially developed to offer a restaurant and lounges for guests and locals alike. Due to the building's listed status, there is no elevator on the premises, and on-site parking is not available.

Pros +
- Coziest room, great complementary breakfast, and perfect location in the middle of the main street! Also: the restaurant is gorgeous.
- Room, location friendly staff
- Great rehab and upkeep of an historically significant property. The historic nature and gentle approach to modernization met perfectly. Love the paintings and prints, the details such as books placed about. Wonderful facility and extremely professional staff. Thank you!
Cons -
- Couldn't tell you!
- Breakfast arrangements are odd. Some dishes too large eg scrambled egg and salmon, choices and combinations not ideal, milk jug far too small sometimes coffee not as hot as it should be.
- Not a thing! We stayed several nights and found the ups and downs (stairs and not so level floors) only adding to the experience and a reminder of the care given to an old structure. Would not change a thing!

Sadly the toilet flushed once then stopped working entirely. I was there only one night so I didn’t bother asking them to fix it.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Very convenient in town.
Shower was a little persnickety.
Breakfast was nice but the service was VERY slow. Plan to set aside at least an hour to an hour and a half. The room was good but VERY pricey and not really a good value.
Location is ideal for Glyndebourne Opera. Walking distance to the railway station to catch the coach to the Opera.Extraordinary staff who were very helpful. Wonderful breakfast. Lewes is a charming village. Could not have been better.
Excellent refurbishment of a historic building, fine view from restaurant.
Loss of parking and swimming pool from the previous owners. I stayed regularly at the hotel over the last 7 years. In all other respects it is now very greatly improved and restored to a fine hotel.
The situation, the decoration and the food.
The room was clean and the bed was comfortable although the shower room was very small
On arrival the staff when we could find them were polite but very disorganised. Breakfast the in the morning was very disappointing. There appeared to be very few guests and the staff were flustered and diagnosed. Coffee when it arrived came as a single cup not a pot, there was no cereal, fruit, yoghurt, croissants or pastries which one now expects as standard even when staying somewhere that charges half the rate of the White Hart. When our scrambled and poached eggs did arrive, they looked very sad indeed. A request for toast came with a small lowly pack of butter and a small pot of jam. When we asked for additional butter it took a long time to come. We felt that the staff although pleasant had no training and simply didn’t know what they were doing. For a hotel to skimp on breakfasts like this is not a good idea and we wonder if they are struggling to survive.
Conveniently located on the High Street and a short walk from the station. The rooms are full of character, blending old structure and modern comfort. The dinner was great too, away from the busy bar area.
Our bedroom was very comfortable and clean and had crisp linen, comfortable bed and great pillows. A lovely touch were the tasty sweet treats on arrival. All of the staff were exceptional, nothing was too much trouble and the atmosphere was happy and friendly. The restaurant was excellent, with delicious food of a high standard and with very efficient and thoughtful waiting staff. Breakfast too was a delight and I particularly enjoyed the full vegetarian. I would definitely recommend the White Hart, it is perfectly situated in pretty Lewes and would happily return
Grade II listed the building, so expect creaky floors and slopes. 2 years ago, it was run down, the staff were disheartened, and it was in need of investment and opportunity.Wind forward to 2025, and wow, what a transformation. The Heart Wood Company has obviously spent serious money revamping the hotel. Our room (The Fancy ) was beautiful, modern, spacious, clean, and so comfortable. There is a new menu that is great to see, and the dining room / veranda is stunning. The only downside part is that there is no parking due to the previous owner. Our room was expensive, and the breakfast was not nice at all. The sausages were spicy and had a nasty herb after kick, the bacon was smoked and streaky and not nice, and the toasted sourdough bread was rock hard. Please serve normal pork sausages and unsmoked back bacon and white bread. Otherwise, it was perfect.
Fabulous old inn building, lovely comfortable room, very dog friendly, fabulous bar area and dinning room and exceptional food, relaxed competent friendly staff.
No lift, no car parking
The overall environment was so great, my friend and I were very pleased with the interior, the comfort, and because we got put on the top floor, the view as well. The room came with a speaker which was so cute for the overall vibe, we enjoyed a very comfortable evening.
Something that really put us off was the fact that there was some construction going on, with hammering noises starting from as early as 7am which continued nonstop all the way until we were leaving the room to check out at 11. Because of this, we did not get a very good sleep, which severely disappointed & troubled us, because everything else was so good. We considered coming back for another visit but we were not sure whether something like this would happen again, so naturally we are much more reluctant now.
The decor was lovely and the rooms so comfy - the bedding and pillows, plus the nice coffee etc. in the room made for a lovely stay
The service at breakfast was pretty painful - and both dinner and breakfast service didn’t seem to be very well equipped for gluten free as staff completely disregarded gluten free request and served me gluten!
We stayed in a suite and it was fabulous. Huge roll-top bath, enormous bed and very comfortable. Lots of space in the room, quiet and warm. The staff were excellent and we had a wonderful time. The main hotel has a lovely atmosphere and the food is great.
