About
The Fox is a 15th-century inn, around 5 minutes’ walk from the center of Bury St Edmunds. It offers a high standard of bed and breakfast accommodations alongside its popular restaurant and bar with pretty terrace beer garden. All rooms at The Fox are equipped with underfloor heating, and incorporate locally made granite-topped furniture. Each has a flat-screen TV, safe, iron, hairdryer and free Wi-Fi, as well as tea and coffee facilities, with the superior Hayloft Suite featuring a luxurious four-poster bed and 2-person bath. Guests can enjoy a freshly cooked full English breakfast served in the inn. The restaurant serves an inviting menu of burgers, steaks, salads and substantial main courses, and lies opposite the Abbey Gardens behind St Edmundsbury Cathedral. Bury St Edmunds offers rich Suffolk heritage with a Regency theater, the medieval Guildhall and the Norman Tower among its varied attractions. A lively street market, a 12th-century museum and a boutique cinema all add to its considerable charm.

- Great food and lovely staff. Room was comfortable, but needed a good dusting.
- Very easy access to our room as it was on ground level with parking directly outside the door. Very comfortable and nicely furnished with a comfortable bed. The bathroom even had a heated floor… Nice touch..!Entrance into the Fox was only a few steps away. The included breakfast was excellent; a good choice on the menu including “Full English “. We had our evening meals there as well and the food was very good. All the staff we met were very friendly. If we return to Bury St. Edmunds we will definitely stay again.
- Great location and lovely staff. Couldn't do enough for you. Breakfast cooked to order and fruit salad very fresh.
Cons -
- Our rental car was vandalized in the car park. :-(
- Everything was to our liking.
- Beds a little firm for us, but whole venue is being renovated in Autumn 2025, so this may change.

The staff were super friendly and the breakfast options were great!
Wish they had a guest washer and dryer on the premises. Local options do not exist for a traveller
Very disappointing for the cost - room issues were in room 5.
No non-slip mat in the bath for a shower.Lifted floorboard (trip hazard) 8' inside main door.Only 2 of 3 ceiling lights worked in the bathroom.Cracked floor tiles in the bathroom - which moved when walked on.One pack of 2 biscuits to share in a room that cost nearly £180/night.Poor quality toilet paper.Dangerous mixer tap for shower - unable to determine temperature until water running.Staff who served us on the day of our visit didn't recognise us at breakfast and asked if we were staying there. No breakfast bar as suggested on the menu.
On site parking. Easy walking access to town centre.Well appointed room.
Room was good
It is over priced for pub accommodation at £145.00 Room only.Would expect a lot more in this price rangeFood was average to poor Breakfast disappointing Only instant coffee.(machine broken) Sausage like cardboard etcI would expect to pay £80.00 for this accommodation.Wouldn’t go back as you can get something much better cheaper or the same price
Lovely room with very comfortable bed, super high ceilings, and very good bathroom with underfloor heating (and lovely and warm in bedroom too!) . Staff welcoming and book in and checking out seamless.
Excellent room - v comfortable bed, lovely shower and bathroom and under floor heating. Food was decent as well. Staff were lovely
Lovely comfy bed, really nice room, great food, staff were nice and very helpful. I would recommend a stay here..
Really convenient and confortable. Close to the center but in a quiet area, spacious and well-conditioned. Nice staff, very good breakfast. I”ll repeat when back in Bury.
A very welcoming stay. Staff were lovely. The room was impressive too. Clean with some extra touches; heated underfloor in the bathroom and great heating controls in the room. Very spacious too and the room had all the info you need in hotel room.
There could have been a few more pillows but really that's a small issue. Also, there was a router attached to the vaulted ceiling which flashes all the time. Slightly disturbs your sleep, especially if you want it dark. They can solve by just placing a cover of sorts over it, I'm sure.
The rooms were outside the pub in a courtyard area, these rooms were very quiet, well finished and comfortable, a comfortable and quiet nights sleep. Very helpful and polite staff.
Did not like a free dog anywhere area, I feel these places when they allow dogs in eating areas should be in one area not all over the food area.
Wet room was excellent although, as we are not disabled, the shower seat and sink were a little low. Bed was comfortable but a better choice of pillows maybe could have helped. Adam was superb and seemed to be permanently working. Food was great despite it being very busy (Valentines weekend)
Room getting a bit tired now but understand they are going to be refurbished in the next few months, telly a bit small. Unable to close roof blind but found there were no batteries in the controller.
Great location, easy parking, friendly staff, comfortable bed, lovely room
Would like to have had a few more toiletries in the bathroom eg hair conditioner. Also the shower wasn't very hot - we did mention this when we checked out.
Lovely check in with Claire and Amy, they were fab the whole time we were there. Thanks for returning David's phone!!! The room was lovely, massive bed with crisp linen. Everything you could want was there. Breakfast was served by Adam who was equally fab, reserved us a table for the rugby, did breakfast both days which was lovely. Really good ingredients. The pub is very close to the centre, less than 5 mins. What a lovely place Bury is. Thanks!!!! Loved it.
Room was spacious, bed large, good size wardrobe, and usual facilities provided
Bathroom sink plug did not function at all, and the sink tap was static which made filling the kettle slightly awkward.
Lovely location near the town. Clean friendly and cosy
We have stayed in Bury St Edmund’s on several occasions before, in various hotels/bnb’s. This was our first time staying at the Fox and I cannot recommend it enough. The rooms were clean, spacious, well decorated and an excellent size. The bed was super comfortable, room had everything we needed and the breakfast in the morning was absolutely delicious! Well worth a visit.
Easy to access, local and clean.Staff were helpful and friendly.
