About
Built in 1452, the award-winning Angel Hotel is on one of the prettiest squares in the country, opposite the Abbey Gardens overlooking Angel Hill. The Angel Hotel offers traditional Georgian elegance and charm, mixed with modern design. The hotel offers 77 bedrooms, many featuring views of the Abbey Ruins and deep copper bath tubs. The ground floor of the hotel, totally refurbished in 2019, offers plenty of guest areas to enjoy. The lounge, featuring a log fire, is the perfect setting to meet friends for coffee, enjoy a light lunch or indulge in afternoon tea. The bar, offering table service, overlooks Angel Hill and is the perfect place to enjoy a pre dinner drink. The Eaterie is open daily, serving breakfast, lunch & dinner. Booking is advisable, as Bury St Edmunds is known locally and beyond as the ‘foody capital of Suffolk’. Our underground vaults date back to the 12th century, built using the same stone as the Abbey itself, with tunnels linking to the Abbey. Now, it offers a private dining space and is also home to many food & drink events such as our ‘Sunday Sessions’, ‘Friday Night Socials’ and ‘Steak Nights’. The hotel has been visited by kings, queens, actors and writers. One such guest was Charles Dickens, our most famous former resident, stayed many times and mentions The Angel Hotel in The Pickwick Papers. Every room features bottled water as well as tea and coffee making facilities. The Angel Hotel is in the town center, located next to Abbeygate Street with plenty of shops open to browse. The hotel is within walking distance of Theater Royal and The Apex for those with tickets to see a show, and a 15-20 minute walk from the train station. The Angel Hotel also offers Valet Parking for an additional fee of £7.50 per 24 hours. On site parking is available on a first come, first served basis. Additional parking is available off site, however the hotel offers a dedicated concierge team to assist with car parking and a 24-hour front desk.

Room was a bit dated but excellent value for money
The staff were all really friendly and welcoming, the food and drink was great, rooms well appointed.
Bed was really firm, not an issue if you like that sort of thing.
Location and upmarket
Lack of attention to detail with accommodation. Maintenance and freshening up of rooms is suggested. No USB points, mould in bathroom tile grouting, sloppy painting of walls around curtain holdback hooks, stain on the lift floor carpet etc.
Central location Room was comfortable and clean, a bit quirky! We had Sunday lunch, it was amazing!Staff we helpful
We waited 25 minutes to get a drink in the bar
Location very good
Terribly overpriced - the shower tiles were mouldy
Staff were absolutely brilliant. We a left a watch in the room. Staff located and said no problem to send it on. They parked our car for us in a secure location. They were friendly and helpful. Wonderful place to stay. We will be back !
There is no Spa but I can’t really complain about that.
Great location. Comfortable spacious room. Lovely ambience. Parking available.
Excellent traditional coaching inn that has been brought up to date sympathetically. Restaurant highly recommended.
Exceptional historic building on the centre of the town.
Limited parking BUT very good alternative provided
We truly enjoyed our stay at The Angel Hotel. The staff were exceptionally welcoming and attentive throughout, and the overall ambiance of the hotel was lovely. The decor in the dining areas and bar was stylish and inviting, making every mealtime a pleasure.
However, while the shared spaces felt modern and well-maintained, the bedrooms could use some updating. At the room rate, we expected small luxuries like robes, slippers, and higher-end toiletries. The showerhead also could have been cleaner, which detracted slightly from the overall experience. With a few improvements to the rooms, this could easily become a top-tier destination. The heart and hospitality are there—just a little polish needed behind the doors.
Location was right in the centre opposite the cathedral . They were fully booked for the evening meal but still accommodated us in the bar area which is lovely . Rooms were beautiful clean and tastefully decorated . The parking service was exceptional . The ground floor room as requested was perfect .
Fabulous location and smart common areas. Dog friendly with parking available. Good restaurants on site.
Room was a bit tired but comfortable. Reception was efficient - but not particularly warm in style.
The location was excellent and staff very friendly and helpful.
There was no lift and that made it difficult for one of our party to climb the stairs. Given the price of the room we were expecting better.
Good location and lovely staff.
Dated room. Expensive. Chipped bathroom sink and uses a shower curtain not glass screen. Ground floor corridor smelt bad.
Public areas were great, warm and welcoming.
Room needs some maintenance/attention. Toilet roll holder broken, window netting came off in your hand when opened, balance on broken fittings. Shower had mould, sealant needs replacing, simple solution.
Room was poor layout for electric sockets not good. Shower with curtain poor and overall not comfortable expected more. Staff did their best
We didn't eat at the hotel but the food we saw looked great, the location was exactly in the centre of everything, so easy to get everywhere on foot. The room was extremely comfortable and clean, the staff were amazing and were always on hand to attend to our requirements, the valet service for the car was an additional welcome touch.
Nothing, will be going back and staying at the hotel. Will be trying the food and drink next time.
Breakfast was excellent
Facilities for my disabled wife were difficult ie ramp had to be used to get to reception, bar and restaurant.
The porter (Steve) was exceptionally helpful and took care of our car and bags throughout the stay.
