About

Dating back to 1438, the historic Cathedral Gate is in the heart of Canterbury. Once slept in by pilgrims, the hotel predates the adjoining gateway to Canterbury Cathedral and features wooden beams and sloping floors. The rooms feature a TV, telephone, and tea and coffee making facilities. Each room has a hairdryer, along with a shared or private bathroom. Some rooms have views of Canterbury Cathedral. In the mornings, Cathedral Gate serves continental breakfast. Full English breakfast is also available for an additional fee. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout. The Cathedral Gate is just steps from the bustling Buttermarket and the cathedral precincts. The city is home to numerous high street shops and restaurants, which are within a 2-minute stroll. Canterbury West and Canterbury East Railway Stations are both just 15 minutes’ walk away.

    Pros +

    • It's very old, and they 'lean into' the sloped floors, which are quite pronounced in many areas of the hotel. It is RIGHT next to the Canterbury Cathedral, so a perfect location. The breakfast was good, and more than 'continental'!
    • The Location could not have been better.
    • Literally next door to the cathedral with fantastic views. Right in the center of shopping and food. Old, classic style that I loved. Incredibly pleasant and helpful staff.

    Cons -

    • Well, they claim to have 'views' of the Cathedral - if you have to lean a few feet out of your 3rd-story window to catch a glimpse, I wouldn't exactly call that a cathedral 'view'. In addition, they don't have AC or elevators.
    • The location posed a few difficulties in getting to the hotel and also parking. However a parking voucher purchased from the hotel greatly reduced the cost. There was no air conditioning which may have been a problem in hot weather.
    • Shared bathroom, but I got over it. Crazy lady outside in the street singing that sounded like a dying cat, but that isn't the hotel's fault!

So close to all that is to see in "old" Canterbury."Character" building.

Central location not far from a car park. The hotel has real character and much better than a modern building. Continental breakfast was very good and what ever you needed was provided with no restrictions. Staff were great.

For us the bed was on the soft side, but that of course is personal taste. Minor addition -it would have been nice to have a small shelf in the shower room to put the bodywash container on and a mat for the shower tray.

This is one of the quirkiest hotels I’ve ever stayed in, with its charmingly uneven floors, narrow hallways, and little stairways that wind up and down throughout the building. It truly feels like stepping back in time. The location is perfect, right beside the old gate, and from our window we had a wonderful view of the cathedral. Our room was lovely, the staff were friendly and very helpful, and the breakfast was thoroughly enjoyable.

The property was spotlessly clean and close to where we needed to be.

The slippery metal steps outside - could do with some non slip paint on them as I slipped!

Location and the discount for the car park when u stay there .Quirky.

Our room was clean and bed very comfortable however the heating never went off throughout the night and found out that the thermostat couldn’t be turned down so had to sleep with window open which was noisy outside, shower head was blocked and leaking, tv was pretty bad . No one to speak to in the morning as they were busy doing breakfast. Wouldn’t stay again .

It was clean and quiet and the room was a good size

I asked for a Cathedral view and while technically true it wasn’t exactly a good view

the staff were friendly, The price of the bar was alright great lodge to stay in if your going to be out most of the night. the beds are really comfy. the breakfast service was really good and allowed you to order multiple items at once .

You can hear other peoples showers in the morning and it sounds like screaming and the décor is a little outdated in some parts of the building which gives a haunted vibe.

We loved the location , right next to the cathedral. Parking was easy 5 minute walk away with a call to the hotel to register our car for parking , this was £13 for 24 hrs which is very reasonable. We were met by a very friendly female member of staff who was very informative and welcoming and showed us to our room which had a magnificent view if the cathedral towers! The bed was comfy, warm and clean. The shower was good and the room heating was perfect. We were asked by reception if the room warmth was good, this was nice on a frosty January stay. Breakfast was lovely, looking over the square. Little confusing as to what you can order for the continental breakfast included as we were not sure if we could order 1 or 2 or maybe more items , having said this the porridge and crossaint and fresh coffee were lovely and adequate. Staff were attentive. Overall we loved our stay, it was made good by staff, location, warmth and comfort of rooms and history of the buiding. The price was great too.

Just maybe clearer what is included in the continental breakfast

Check in was seamless with friendly and helpful staff. The location was perfect next to the Cathedral, it was good value for money including an excellent breakfast , the room was very comfortable, warm, well equipped and clean. The building was very old, of historical interest and full of character.

Cathedral Gate is an amazing and lovely place to stay. It is all on upper floors in buildings that back on the cathedral with stairs going hither and thither. Very charming and exceptionally wonderful staff.

    Central

Noise and throbbing music until after 2am. Earplugs were appreciated but didn’t do much to help.

    9HaselgrovePosted on: 12-12-2025

Staff were extremely attentive and helpful.Went out of the way to help us with our bearings with our sight difficulties.Perfect for visiting the cathedral, would definitely stay again.Great hot chocolate.Remember it is a old building and floors are not straightBut adds to the charm big time. Can be noisy at night as in centre if the town, but that is to be expectedIf your a light sleeper take your ear defenders.

    All great
