    Pros +

    • The location
    • Quiet yet central location. Historic building with spacious restaurant area - lots of space between tables! Premium room modernly and comfortably furnished. Tiefgarage nearby at 24 hr reduced hotel rate 18€
    • The location is perfect, in the old centre, and the building itself is one of the centre's most beautiful buildings. It was great value for the price.

    Cons -

    • We reserved and paid online. But we were unable to check-in as we could not get the key out of the lockbox with the PIN we were given. The staff had left early & we could not get help that night. We had to check into another hotel. Our money was refunded.
    • Front desk staff seemed too busy with local holiday parties booked in their restaurant to attend to hotel guests. The parties were prioritized first.
    • Older hotel, need room renovation especially bathroom. Very cold, I don't know if this is because it's Germany but my guests in my hotel would leave us if they had no heating or very low heating in December. Older lady who work on reception/restaurant need better attitude towards the guests.

Beautiful large room, typically Black Forest theme throughout. Excellent breakfast with assorted meats, cheeses and eggs. Gourmet coffee maker. Located in Altstadt minutes from the Cathedral, oldest continually operated Gasthaus in Germany, since 1120.Plenty of electrical outlets and modern bathrooms. Complementary bottles of water replaced daily.

No improvement or change to suggest

Location and the beautiful rooms also the breakfast was fantastic

We had an extremely unpleasant experience with an employee (who had several complaints against him ) and when we sent our complaint to the head of the hotel it was ignored no one ever got back to us. Was very disappointed about that

The hotel is situated near one of the clock towers a short walk to the Munster. The building is architecturally beautiful. Very old but very well maintained. Super warm, cosy room with extremely comfortable beds. A nicely presented breakfast with plenty of choice. We may return to Freiburg and will stay here again if we do. Helpful and attentive staff.

Lovely historic hotel in a central location – perfect for visiting the Münster and wandering around the old town, or taking the Straßenbahn. The breakfast was first-rate – plenty of choice, everything fresh and nicely presented. Our room was clean, spacious and very quiet. One of the most comfortable hotel beds I've ever experienced.

Nothing not to like, apart from the fact the restaurant was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but there are so many nice eateries in the vicinity, that that wasn't really a problem.

This is the oldest hotel in Germany. Its central location could not be better. For car arrivals: you can park in front of the hotel, but on the OTHER SIDE of the street, due to the presence of the tram. The whole center of Frieburg is pedestrian streets only, because of the 2 tram tracks. I recommend one person stays in the car while the others go check in, if not you will get a fine. We got one after only parking 5 minutes. Cops friendly nation I guess. Myself, I arrived by train therefore I took the number 1 tram direction Littenweiler (3 euros) & stopped at OBERLINGEN. The hotel is 30 meters away. Very practical. Careful: there are road works on the tram line as of 27Oct25 so better take a taxi from the train station to the hotel as Tram 1 line is interrupted. The hotel & staff are truly charming. My room was big, even had a sofa. My view was over the flowered courtyard, as in a Seville home with a patio. Thus the night was very quiet. I'm happy I did not have a room over the tram tracks. The shower & bath were perfect, courtesy of fantastic Germany Grohe plumbing, the best in the world in my view. Thank you for the 2 bottles of water, they are a lifesaver as German food uses sausages that are salty of course. Ah, you must have a very nice German dinner at a restaurant only a stone throw away: ZUM KRANZ (Herrenstraße 40, 79098 Freiburg im Breisgau). The waitress doesn't speak much English but with your hands & google translate you will do fine. They were charming. We were placed at a long table together with other guests, love it! (in French we call it "table d'hôte" where people who don't each other are placed together at the same table, enabling true encounters.) The food was very German, perfect as we were eager to discover German cuisine. To get back to the hotel, we looooved the b'fast moment as it is a generous buffet in a charming room. Check the magnificient ceramic, old wood burner behind the coffee machine!

The location is wonderful. The provided breakfast was very good. Our room was charming and very clean. The building is fascinating; make sure you visit the basement to see the early foundations. We didn't eat dinner in the restaurant. In response to other reviews, you can lock the door of your room from the inside, but it's old fashioned so it takes a minute to figure it out. There was a heated shelf beneath the sink that helped dry out the socks I washed.

We liked it all, but if you're looking for modern accommodations, keep looking. This is a charming, old hotel that has modern bathrooms and comfortable beds. The staff for the inn is also taking care of the reception for the restaurant; they were attentive, but you may have to wait a couple minutes.

Easy to find and friendly staff. Great location in the old town, close to cafes, restaurants and shops.

Being in the old town it was a bit noisy at night which might bother some people (I had a room at the front on the 3rd floor). No mini-fridge.I thought the room decor was a bit tired, could do with a refresh (but can still be in keeping with the age of the property).

Room needs updating, including some bathroom renovation, and new mattress
