    Pros +

    • The guest lounge is a great area to work in. Our room was spotlessly clean, and the owners and staff are extremely helpful. A short walk from restaurants, bars and other attractions.
    • Warm welcome from AJ, showed us our room. Nice big size, comfy bed. Cupboard with safe. Tea, coffee facilities. Little mini bar fridge. In the corridor there was a water cooler. Great shower. The only tiny issue was that there was only one hook for a towel and no towel rail. Another hook would have been perfect. Liked the complimentary body wash, shampoo etc, smelt lovely. Laundry facilities were available. There was a guest lounge also to use. Car parking a very short distance away. Loved the position of the hotel, easy to walk to bars and restaurants. Also close to cycle hire, called cycle inn. Great for going along the sea front. Meet other staff during our stay, all very nice. All in all we had a great stay.
    • We had a fantastic stay at The State Hotel! The staff were very welcoming, in particular AJ who also gave us some great local tips for site seeing in New Plymouth, which made the visit all the more great

    Cons -

    • Just the hook issue in the bathroom.
    • The room faced the Main Street so could hear traffic noise
    • The staff are great when called for but pretty invisible most of the time. Though there's a sort of desk at the entrance it was never staffed. There's no restaurant. You can eat at Joe's Garage downstairs and charge back. It's kind of grunge and doesn't fit the hotel style. My room was rather small and the bathroom pokey with only the minimum provided. Not what I expected for the price.

Location excellent, room very clean, friendly staff, decor lovely.

The room faced the Main Street so could hear traffic noise

It's a dear old hotel that has been restored well. It has a guest lounge which is very quaint and well-used when i was there. The bed was okay though not luxurious. The location in the heart of the city is great, with the waterfront, Puke Ariki and the Govett-Brewster all in easy walking distance, as we're lots of good eating places.

The staff are great when called for but pretty invisible most of the time. Though there's a sort of desk at the entrance it was never staffed. There's no restaurant. Position was fabulous, rooms were beautifully appointed, AJ & Team were absolutely amazing, helping with everything from luggage to wonderful eatery advice, nothing was too much trouble.

    Loved everything

    Location & parking good

    Busy street & bar scene

    9GeoffPosted on: 1-18-2026

Kate was very helpful and polite. Stairs and off-site parking were the only two things that impacted on our perception of value for money. Highly recommended.

The room and location were excellent. AJ, the manager, was really welcoming, friendly and helpful on arrival.

The restaurant/bar below is average. OK for dinner, but we found much better breakfast options elsewhere. Emmalou Macaron stood out as the breakfast was delicious.

We loved the decor and the design concept of this little boutique hotel in a historic building. We enjoyed the eclectic artwork and friendly staff. We especially appreciated the comfortable guest lounge. The room was very clean and comfortable with a relaxing ambience. Great location in the main street in walking distance to everything.

The bathroom was very tiny with no room to put your toothbrush and toothpaste etc. There was nowhere to hang your towel. It had a great shower but not much room to get round the door to get into it.

We got an upgrade to a king room for a reduced price. Private parking places are available nearby.

Even the king room was not as big as we expected, and it only had a shower.

The style, the room was cosy and comfortable and the staff were so helpful and friendly.

There wasn’t much privacy in the bathroom with it having a frosted glass door. It wasn’t a problem for us but I can see how it could be an issue for others.

Fantastic hotel, great decor, nice and spacious rooms with amenities like kettle, fridge and microwave. Short walk to the beach. Lots of nice restaurants in the same complex. Staff were really friendly.

    Nothing really - all good.

Central location with close parking. Quirky boutique hotel with thoughtful touches in rooms.

    Decor, staff, location .... fabulous!

Stayed here for a work trip so had one of the smaller rooms, facilities were clean and bed was really comfortable, i adored the decor and feel on the hotel it felt like staying at someone's home. Location was easy walking distance to restaurants and supermarket. I will stay again when i am next here!

Room was quite small but fine for a night or two, might be niggly for a couple who want some extra space.

AJ and his family are incredibly welcoming and went out of their way to make our trip a great one. The rooms are comfortable and it has good amenities — walking distance to some great cafes, restaurants and the beach.

Great boutique style room. Had everything we needed for a couple of nights. Comfortable and clean. Easy access to the waterfront.

The shower kept going from hot to cold
