Pros +

  • Room with hot tub was really clean & a great view. Good value for money
  • Excellent location. Has so much potential but just misses the mark.
  • - A location and interior unlike ANYTHING else!- Romantic setting.- A friendly goat greeting us at the gate to the Arc every morning ?- Electric car charging is possible (we didn't use it though).

Cons -

  • The driveway was very dangerous and we were fearful our tyres would pop. The entrance is very steep and difficult to carry luggage. There was no one to assist with luggage. While the bath was lovely the shower nozzle over the bath was very difficult to use. The staff were lovely but we had difficulty communicating effectively.
  • - Dinner, part 1: we asked for recommendations to get vegetarian dinner in the area. Initial response "WOW THAT IS DIFFICULT". Eventually, she came back with two recommendations, but they were both closed. Attention to detail: poor.- Dinner part 2: we ordered a vegetarian pizza plus two salads for dinner. When it arrived … it turned out that the salads were literally COVERED in meat. We were utterly flabbergasted. When we raised this with them, they told us "you didn't specify this". But … literally the only information we had was: "salad" — zero information about the actual composition of the salad. You'd think that ordering a vegetarian pizza is enough indication that we do not eat meat…- Breakfast: despite ordering the bigger/more expensive breakfast option it was … very underwhelming.- Staff: see dinner parts 1 & 2. They did a poor job. Nobody was competent. At checkout time we had to pay for the pizza & salads and they refused to not charge the meaty salads. After a long while they gave us a €0.5 discount for each salad ?- At checkin time, they wrote down in a PAPER NOTEBOOK my credit card information. At checkout time, I still had to pay separately, which makes me wonder A) why they needed my credit card, B) the security of my credit card information. Because … the paper notebook is lying in plain sight, unsupervised…- Parking: not for the faint of heart. I managed to, but with my rental car, I had to precisely navigate the very narrow entryway that was both steep _and_ turning _and_ had a ~15 cm/half foot threshold to get over: so you had to accelerate quite harshly to get past it!
  • the breakfast is French which means a bit simple but okay.

the room is build against the rock and this makes it very special. the furniture is of good quality and the location is near the start of the Ardèche river.

the breakfast is French which means a bit simple but okay.

Unique interiorGreat location - 2 min walk to the Verdon GorgeFriendly staff

Parking onsite was difficult No AC Our room had no WIFI due to poor reception Not ideal for travellers with mobility issues - there was a narrow spiral staircase that is challenging to climb and may be a risk of injury

OK, this was a difficult place to rate. For me, this was one of the most enchanting places I've ever stayed. It is a boutique hotel built into the side of a mountain and gives you a cave-like ambiance to match the nearby famous cave paintings. The rear wall was natural rock, as was the floor. There was a monstrously sized tub on the first level. The stairs going up to the mezzanine were also rock. If you are a bit adventurous, the ambiance is truly fantastic. So, keeping in mind that the place is like a cave, you must also realize that certain areas (like the natural stone floor) would be difficult to clean. Don't stay here and complain that there is sand between the stones. It is not air conditioned, but given that it is like a cave it doesn't need to be. If you are looking to make complaints, you will find them here. But I slept wonderfully. The breakfast was exceptional. It is also within easy walking distance of the Pont d'Arc, a natural bridge with a river flowing under it. The actual Art Cave of the Ardeche is about a five or ten minute walk, but you aren't allowed to go in there. The museum was (according to signs) about 6km, but I'm dubious. I thought it was much farther. Still, Le Silex is a wonderful place to stay and we will be back.

Again, don't stay here if you will freak out about dirt between the rock floor. The driveway from the road up to parking is tricky and quite steep. When I was there it was blocked by idiotic tourists that didn't seem to want to get out of the danger zone. We had order out pizza and it was truly horrible.

The location is excellent and the place is beautiful. The breakfast was OK and the staff person was very kind of adapting it for may partner who is intolerant to Lactose and Soy.

The toilet, which is in a separate closet, has not ventilation!!! Plus the door of the toilet room is very tight and you either hit your head when sitting or you close the door after having sat down. The bathtub is in the open and if you want to take a shower you make a big mess of water.

Top location to go swimming, close to the river and the arche.Beautifully decorated rooms.Breakfast is served outside.

We were there during sime very hot days. Be prepared for some sweating: there’s no air conditioning. The rocks give a lot of cool, and it’s bearable, but it stays hot.

Le Silex is a very special hotel in an extraordinary location. The service was very good and attentive. The accommodation is not suitable for people with mobility issues though!

The spiral staircase to the bathroom!
