About
Viscondes da Varzea is a charming hotel set in an aristocratic country manor dating back to the 17th century. It is surrounded by vineyards, fruit orchards and olive groves at the heart of the Douro Region. Rural Casa dos Viscondes da Varzea is an example of Portugal's Gothic-Manueline architecture. On-site wonders include a chapel with a baroque altar, centuries' old wine cellars and the oil press, still in use. The atmospheric rooms of the hotel include antique furnishings and a deluxe bathroom with bathtub and courtesy bathrobe and slippers. Decorative elements include stone banisters and baroque goblets. There are also an elevated salt-water swimming pool and a tennis court. During the wine harvesting months, guests can participate in the wine pressing and join in folklore dinners, accompanied by concertina music. Hotel Rural Casa is located in Lamego and is close to the Murganheira Cellars, where sparkling wine tastings are regularly held.

- There are not enough words to describe how beautiful this property is. Stunning as far as the eye can see! And the buffet breakfast and dinner were amazing.
- Stunning gorgeous property full of historic charm…the staff and owners were very accommodating when we needed to find a room that would be quieter on the property. Wonderful dinner and breakfast
- Beauty everywhere - it is in the most gorgeous setting.
Cons -
- Not uncharacteristic of an older property, the beds were extremely uncomfortable. EXTREMELY firm and creaked every time you turn. Also the water pressure was so intense it sent the shower head flying, had to turn the water off in between shampooing.
- Nothing it was gorgeous and the grounds were beautiful.
- It was a bit run down if you look closely and could use a good cleaning in some areas, but in spite of this it is still so beautiful.

Very beautiful, and special hotel. An old vineyard estate still functioning as such. Dinner was a bit pricey but worth it for the ambience and the food was very good , not to mention the wine. We made use of the beautiful pool and the tennis courts (although the latter are a bit run down).
The setting was beautiful amongst the orchards with grand drawing rooms and a plethora of antiques. Many terraces to share a bottle of wine and rooms were comfortable. Breakfast had multiple offerings of farm fresh fruits, and the selection of meats and cheeses plus fresh orange juice. Dinner was the best as you shared the elaborate table with people from all over the world. Excellent food, wine, and after dinner drinks. The staff went above and beyond to ensure you were happy and had everything you need. Maria, the owner was super welcoming.
Tip!Rooms were allotted on a first come first serve basis so it’s best to get there early to check in.
The location was absolutely perfect! The property was so beautiful and the staff was so accomodating.
The mattresses on the beds were so hard. They needed a foam mattress topper. We did not sleep well.
The grounds and buildings of the estate are extremely beautiful. The swimming pool was clean. We enjoyed meeting other travellers at dinner and breakfast around a large table surrounded by many beautiful antique dishes. It was serenely quiet and the chiming of the church bells at 8 in the morning was so quaint.
Many things inside the guest rooms need to be replaced and upgraded. The hot water was inconsistent. The shower head was not installed so you have to squat in the tub. One sink faucet was broken. The glasses were not clean. The side table drawer still contained someone else’s garbage. The mattress is uncomfortable and the pillows are lumpy. The salmon at dinner was dry.
Our biggest regret was only staying for 1 night! This property is truly a dream. It is hands down the most magical place I’ve ever stayed! There is much more to the property than just the main house- there are gardens and fruit trees at every turn. Maria and her staff are so helpful and the food is top notch! If you want a real, authentic property to stay at - this is your place! Truly can’t be beat. Thanks Maria!!!
Nothing!!! The only thing to note is that some rooms do not have AC, so if you’re staying during the hot months it’s a bit warm
Very nice location in the middle of a vineyard. Beautiful estate. Rooms are ample and nice, a bit old fashioned but very well maintained. Food is wonderful. Staff is superbly nice
Mosquitos! But they don’t bite nor bother ;-)
This vinyard villa is indescribably beautiful. The very large & beautiful 1803 structure is lovingly restored by Maria, the family owner and descendant (I was told by a reliable source) of the original developer of the property, lost to the family in the revolution & recovered through determination and love. The very interesting building is the home of weekly weddings, and the grounds & interior reveal why. All staff was superbly reliable, friendly and helpful. Compliments especially go to Juliana, the front desk manager, who was tirelessly attentive, friendly and delightful. And the wait staff from Nepal-Thank you!!Be aware that it is nestled in the countryside & can be a difficult find in the dark, but they guided us there and we woke the stunning grounds and surrounding vinyards. Pool is private & refreshing, easy parkingIncluded. The breakfast, included, and evening meals (by reservation) were exceptional and their red & white wines and port were delicious! Highly recommended.
Love the location but do keep following its long gravel road drive into the property, turn left & you’ll find it. Just arrive before dark.
The site and the staff. The owner is on the spot and took care of us
No coffee machine in the room and no fridge. It’s not a place where they made the wine, they grew the grapes but they didn’t make it.
The staff was wonderful and the place was an amazing historical gem.
The heating and water had issues so a bit stressful at times.
The manor is very authentic and unique. The manor has a beautiful view of the landscape. The rooms are very unique, the service is kind and friendly.
Breakfast could be more special. Of course it fills you up, but it doesn't really create a taste sensation. I didn't really like coffee.
Beautiful house, surrounded by wineyards and olive trees. We were very pleasantly surprised, and just walking around the property and especially the house was a wonder.
A beautiful place, but the staff seemed to be absent, for a whole day there didn't seem to be anyone around. We were beginning to think we were in some kind of Agatha Christie story where all the staff have disappeared. Because of this we were never offered or able to order drinks or coffee etc until the last evening, a really strange set up. Average breakfast, not very clean. Old lumpy pillows, cold house, really disappointing.
A lovely experience all around! Beautiful charming hotel, gorgeous details everywhere you look. A beautiful weekend escape.
My only suggestion re ways to improve would be to offer higher quality, local products for breakfasts (i.e local jams, fruit, yogurt, cheeses, bread, etc). Otherwise, a lovely experience!
The views the property offers are breathtaking. Its not just one building but from what we saw three, so very spacious.
Only downsides the beds were like sleeping on rock and once you opened your curtains all heat goes.
beautiful quaint rural quintascenery around it is beautifulold charmbeautiful lounges with fire places
FREEEEEZING, don't go in the winterthey have small electric heaters, just not enoughfrozen during the entire staythey know, but can't fix it - staff wears ski jackets at all times, funnymain house has no insulation between bedrooms - move to the rooms in the outbuilding
Lovely location. Interesting property with a fascinating history. We were not able to fully appreciate the gardens etc as it was raining during our stay.
Unique and beautiful with an amazingly warm and gracious staff. Great food and such a relaxing evening after dinner sitting by the fireplace enjoying a glass of wine and visiting with other guests. Highly recommend for the traveler seeking an authentic slice of Portugal.
Nothing really.
