About

At the head of the famous Flåm Railway in Myrdal, this hotel is only accessible by train and sits high above Aurlandsfjord. It is not located very close to Myrdal station, it's located 0.9 mi from Myrdal. It's not possible to walk to the hotel wintertime due to the snow conditions. We recommend to take the train one stop down from Myrdal to Vatnahalsen station. Important to check the timetable for the trains. It takes 30 minutes to walk summertime. It's NOT possble to drive by car to Vatnahalsen hotel. The hotel offers free WiFi, a traditional restaurant, and a lounge bar with pool table and fireplace. At Vatnahalsen Høyfjellshotell guests are surrounded by a wild mountain landscape. There is direct access to hiking routes and fishing is possible on Reinungavatnet lake. Hotel rooms overlook the lake and mountains, and Vatnahalsen Høyfjellshotell has a breakfast buffet each morning. The Flåm Railway stops at the Vatnahalsen station just 164 feet from the hotel. From Flåm, 12 mi down the valley, fjord cruise routes run to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nærøyfjord. The popular Rallarvegen Navvies' Road passes through Vatnahalsen. This spectacular cycling route crosses over the Hardangervidda mountain plateau and ends on the shores of Aurlandsfjord.

    Pros +

    • It felt very homey in a rustic, cabin kind of way. Liked the breakfasts and the large common areas. Playground and pool and stunningly beautiful environment.
    • Fantastic location. Lovely views. Great staff. Brilliant hotel tucked away - I will definitely visit again !
    • Great dinner. Good access to hiking.

    Cons -

    • If you think cabin, you will like it. If you think posh, you won't. No hair dryer, tv, and beds were singles.
    • Late check in and early check out can be an issue.
    • Could use a renovation. Sink is in the shower. Some staff didn't seem well-informed; others were more helpful.

Wonderful breakfast with lots and lots of choices. They even offered a way to pay for bread to make a to go sandwich.

Location, setting, lounge facilitiesBuffet dinner was delicious. Relaxed environment

Room is very basic, large dusty cushions on bed are not needed

    10ShirinPosted on: 8-4-2025

Breakfast and dinner were great but dinner was rather expensive considering you are captive in the hotel

It costs so much money traveling back and forth into flam by train for 3 days. Unfortunately I couldn't get a booking in Flam or Aurland so I got stuck paying 3 days of round trips on the historic flam train. I wish there was a hotel guest discount or something.

We liked the remote location and it being a different experience. Loved the buffet dinner and traditional Norwegian breakfast! Staff was courteous. Loved the pool table for an after dinner activity!!

Beautiful setting , beautiful old hotel with nice staff. The breakfast was above and beyond.

The rooms were cozy, bed was great, theres a seat to relax in the room, the view is great, bathrooms are bit older but work great and are clean! The location is just Perfect, its about an 30-40 minute walk from myrdal station or you can take the train to directly under the hotel. Id advise you to walk... the view is great!1 km from a lake where you can take a swim, its a bit cold but very nice. You can look at the area around the lake, hike up to the mountais or hop on the zipline so theres a lot to do and this Hotel is a good starting point!?

Dinner here is about 500kr (~48 dollar/euro) so quite expensive, didnt eat anything there, so I dont know if its worth it.

It was in a fabulous location.

No transfer available from Myrdal station. The vehicles were at the hotel but no staff could drive them. The road is unmade but not impassible. It is extremely steep up and down on the way.

Good staff ,, good breakfast great view

The location really if there was a car rode it will be better

The location was excellent, only a few meters from the Vatnalhasen station, with superb views of the waterfall, lake and surroundings. The hotel was of its time, but comfortable, warm and welcoming with so many places to sit and relax. The buffet dinner was delicious and varied and the breakfast set us up for the day.

Personnel is doing their best considering the building itself is very old. Looks like built in 70s.

A bit messy and informal approach by receptionists.

If you are part of the Norway in a Nutshell travel and you need to stay I Myrdal for overnight, don’t choose this one. W

Bad location. No one helps u at night even they said they will be there for check-in. You called many times but no one picks up the phone.Trap reservation options of non-refundable rooms. Very bad traffic conditions. There is no service level in my mind. The low light of our Norway travel.

Iconic location along Flam train track.Beautiful natural surroundings including remnant snow patches on the mountains and waterfalls from snow melt.

Unfortunately there was major rail track by noisy heavy machinery until midnight. Unlucky.Dinner cost was 225 Norwegian kron.

    - Clean room- friendly and polite staff- Nice seating/lounge area- 24 hour tea and coffee station- Great breakfast and even better dinner- perfect location on the Flamsbana

I was getting down in Myrdral around 9:30PM, Flam railway, which is the only way to get to the hotels had no service at this time. The manager of the train that I was travelling contacted the hotel, and the hotel sent me one of the staff members with a luggage carrier to pick me. All my friends in England said that it is something exceptional way of treating a customer. Staff was so very friendly and also helpful. The view from the hotel is amazing, and unbelievable. Breakfast is so delicious with home made bread and porridge, and also locally produced jams.

There was nothing I didn't like about this hotel.

    6JacquiPosted on: 7-2-2023

Interesting place to stay. Has an historic feel to it. Nice easy walking around it.

Bathroom was very small. Noisy during the night as they are doing some sort of local construction of a bridge over the railway line… they worked all night.

Given the location on top of mountain this hotel has all the basic things u need for a pleasant stay. Even if something needful is not there in room, just ask for it and hotel will arrange it. Must stay here for a night or two and enjoy every around.

Very minor things:1) Curtains are not light proof. 2) You need to walk a little bit (beautiful short hike) if you are reaching myrdal at odd hours. This is a problem for ppl with heavy luggage.
