About

Housed in a 17th-century Benedictine Monastery, this Parador Hotel sits on the highest point of the town of Monforte de Lemos, in northern Galicia. Enjoy locally-caught game in the elegant restaurant. Built around the property's main cloister, the Parador de Monforte de Lemos's bedrooms are luxurious, spacious and well-lit. Admire careful decor which is in harmony with the Monforte de Lemos's neoclassical style. You can enjoy a stroll around the pretty gardens of the property and take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool in the summer. Sit down with a good book in the pleasant setting of the Monforte's covered terrace - with garden views. Alternatively, unwind in the hotel's hot tub for the ultimate relaxation after a workout in the gym. Enjoy the panoramic views of the town and its surrounding area from this hotel. You can visit the beautiful surrounding countryside of the Ribeira Sacra region of Galicia, with its rich natural and monumental heritage.

    Pros +

    • Room pleasant
    • Always great to stay in a well designed restoration of an old monastery. Big, nicely decorated rooms with comfortable beds. Great views over the valley from rooms as well as outside of property. Plenty of free outdoor parking.
    • The hotel was very good and had wonderful atmosphere. Our check in went well and the staff were helpful. It should be noted that, like other Spanish hotels, they are very lightly staffed. When a large group or tour arrives, it is definitely stretched (but this is not often). We managed to be their for a procession at the attached church, where the people wound their way around the hill to get up. We also managed to be there for the Great Power Outage (where the whole country (and Portugal) went dark). The hotel had backup power that operated until the national grid was restored, but the staff went and got candles just in case (so we actually missed the opportunity for a romantic and historical experience - though elevators and room lights was likely better). All in all, one of our favorite Paradors. We found it was convenient, and pleasant, to get to town, but had to go down some steep stretches. Those who are mobility challenged would need to drive or get a taxi.

    Cons -

    • Very poor and expensive meal. Went all the way to the pool - as did many others- to find it was closed for the rest of the year. A sign at check in/ on the lift/ on the stairs down beyond would have been useful. Typical paradores so far of lack of anyone in charge/ concern for customers.
    • Bathroom seems a bit dated. Shower is awkward and not something you would find in a luxury property. Rooms can be a bit noisy from unit above. Staff insists you make a reservation for breakfast - even if you just want coffee. The cafeteria opening at 11:00 seems designed to funnel people into the breakfast restaurant and comes across as a annoying ploy to make extra money. No ramp at front entrance means hauling your bags up stairs.
    • The Jacuzzi / hot tub was a bit cold (to the point of being near freezing). Not a big issue as we were only trying it out to be nosy since the pool was not yet open due to season. I am sure it would be much better during the summer.

We booked a suite which was lovely and spacious and very clean. The Parador is a beautiful building with great views over Monforte. We have stayed several times and will definitely be returning. The food in the restaurant was excellent.

At breakfast in the morning there is an option to order hot food which we did. However, I like to have fruit and yoghurt before and the hot food comes almost immediately so when I came to eat my omelette it had gone cold.

    Architecture. Some staff.

The facilities in general. Breakfast. Cold jacuzzi. The beds. We weren’t treated as guests, but there were two or three friendly staff. I rate the place 2.5 stars. Didn’t live up to the “parador” reputation.

Reception was lovely - other staff were less friendly and welcoming - maybe it's a northern spanish thing? The room was wonderful and the food good - it was an honour to stay in such a magnificent building - I wish the UK would replicate such a great example.

The waiting staff could have been a bit more friendly. We found them quite aloof. The reception staff however, were exemplary in their welcoming attitude.

Historic building and viewsSitting in reception (Cloister area)

Room was dark, had a cold feel to it.Dark corridorsHad to travel a long way including uo and down stairs to get to room. Beautiful old historic building, with such attention to detail in the rooms and common areas. The room we got had a huge living room which we were told used to part of the old church. Breakfast fare was good, the bar was pleasant with reasonably priced wines and beers and they even serve casual meals in the bar. The dinner at the hotel restaurant was better than most hotel restaurants. We were able to park for free in the square by the hotel and didn’t have to use the parking garage for 10 euros a day.

When we arrived, we discovered there was a water outage in the village and this was not mentioned when we checked in. Not their fault it was out, but I think it should have been mentioned when we checked in. It had reportedly been out for about 4 hours when we checked in. However the staff delivered bottles of drinking water and a large jug of water to our room, and when the water came back on about 10:00 that evening, they called to let us know it was back on. They also did a free load of laundry service for me as I told them I was needing to do some hand wash laundry when I checked in. That was nice of them.

The parador was well maintained, excellent staff and our room was exceptional. THere was a lot of history associated with the facility and we enjoyed learning about it.

The only issue we have is the limited food option for dining at the Parador's in general. There needs to be more options for plant-based meals. The vegan burger was not prepared well and was the only item on the menu that we could order.

Good location and an interesting building

The swimming pool was not open and we were not made aware of this until we arrived. The staff in the breakfast room were unfriendly

    Architecture and history

Room dark, view on abandoned pool, strict hours to eat

    9DonatoPosted on: 6-13-2024

Beautiful surroundings, room very clean and comfortable. Very quiet. The dinning room could have done with some extra staff at breakfast service was very slow and food cold when it arrived if you ordered eggs. Staff were very friendly.

We could not access the pool area. We appreciated it was not open but would have like to have had a look.
