    Pros +

    • Great spot on the water, friendly staff.
    • Breakfast was lovely. Reception Staff were excellent and also gave us a lovely room. Breakfast service was excellent.Location is great.Views of the sea and plantings were enjoyed from our room. Shower was great.Price was reasonable.
    • Loved this place - great room size / food was exceptional / great staff - cant fault it

    Cons -

    • Couldn't get spa bath to work
    • Fried bread was a bit too heavy with the breakfast. i didn't notice this on the menu, so I probably should have asked for it unfried. Not a healthy option.Access to movie channel would have been good as TV is not interesting and full of ads. This would impact our choice to stay a few more days to relax in the evenings. The guided tour bus that drives along the beach should be electric as it leaves lots of petrol fumes behind its slow journey. I understand this is not part of your business.
    • Carpet in entry and hallway is old and tired looking.

The location & staff were exceptional. We had our children with us - 2 years old & 4 years old. They went out their way to make them feel welcome

Nothing - would absolutely stay here again

The location of the Duke is spectacular, the hotel is steeped in history, the rooms are not big but it is charming

Access to the rooms is difficult and parking is limited

Location of the hotel was central to the township so easy to walk from and around the town. Beautiful sea views from the front if the hotel. The hotel is stately and well preserved. A treat to stay in.

I wouldn't say didn't like but the dinner menu didn't suit our palette during this season but there are plenty of convenient eating places nearby. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented plus the ambiance of the deck setting perfect.

It’s an absolute beautiful hotel with a restaurant and bar right off the wharf. The staff were friendly and informative, however, they seemed to only deal with specific companies. It’s best to ask information in Paihia.

Everything was very clean and the room was large

We were just a little bit disappointed because it's a beautiful building but our room was a bit basic.

the location, we have been to the duke quite a few times over the years.

we waited for nearly an hour for our evening meal.appart from that we had a nice stay.

Historical setting in a spectacular waterfront location.

Furniture made it difficult to maneuver for two people.

    7LisaPosted on: 11-3-2025

The room was very nicely decorated and comfortable. We booked a small room but two smaller people with one bag no problem. Fresh milk for tea is always a nice touch and the staff in the bar area were very pleasant. Very nice outlook from the verandah watching the sea and people passing by. Our room had a lovely outlook onto classic NZ white timber, red roofed buildings. Lots of birds around too.

We kept being reminded we had booked a small room. It was all over the booking information so we were well aware. Felt this was unnecessary, as if we should have done better.

We were celebrating our 60th wedding anniversary - all the staff particularly reception made this a very special occaision. The slow cooked lamb shoulder for two was superb and good value.

    No complaints

Great location, lots to see and do, beautiful hotel with very comfortable rooms.

Bathroom needed a stronger exhaust fan and lager shower curtain otherwise ok.

    10RobertPosted on: 9-23-2025

Great location, clean and comfortable. Staff is excellent, nice restaurant and bar.

Our room had a kettle and a nice supply of teas but no coffee maker.

    8AdamPosted on: 8-8-2025

The location is excellent and the rooms are well appointed and comfortable, if not a little small. Great restaurant downstairs as well.

For the price the room could have been bigger, but I guess you're paying for the location and old world charm. They could do an edit of their decor though, it's a bit confronting having so many pictures of Captain Cook and the Queen, especially given the proximity to the treaty grounds.

Beautiful location. Room was very well equipped and comfortable. Restaurant was excellent.
