Pros +
- We expected to have to use the little Japanese we knew and translator apps to speak to the staff, however their English was absolutely perfect. They were very polite, helpful, and friendly to us and did not hesitate to help us!

- Staff friendly. Great location. Gave me an extra mattress to make me more comfortable. Good private onsen so don’t have to pay to go elsewhere.
Cons -
- Just the stairs going up to the rooms! Will definitely do better next time with booking!!
- The small bathroom was awkward, and the showered didn’t work and the table which was meant to be helpful, was awkwardly placed. No biggie, but I’m wondering if they could have a smaller table
- It’s a little rundown, but nothing too bad.

Staff friendly. Great location. Gave me an extra mattress to make me more comfortable. Good private onsen so don’t have to pay to go elsewhere.
It’s a little rundown, but nothing too bad.
It has onsens.
The futons on the tatami were too hard (I slept in many traditional style rooms, but this one was the hardest by far). Abd the room was really cold. Not having wifi was disclosed, but this could be fixed easily. There was mold in the bathroom, toilet, sink and the onsens. Only one shared toilet and one shared sink for all the guests with no space to put your things on.The onsen had a slimy floor, didn't seem to be cleaned at all and the water was extremely dirty with hair, residues and other stuff floating around.Maybe coincidentally I got sick with stomach flu during my stay there.
The place has character! I really enjoyed the traditional atmosphere. The 3 onsens in the place were great! The location is quite good, easy access by airport bus. Not too long to the bus stations that take you to the main city attractions. Some decent breakfast options nearby.
It as 3 Onsens, very clean, comfy futons, very nice employees and good location.
As the other said, it’s a bit old, it reminded me of my grandmother’s house. There is a need for repairs as it feels it’s been like this for a while.
Good location, very nice and caring staff, 3 onsens for private use within the ryokan.
This place needs serious refurbishment. It is very old, furniture should be replaced, bathrooms miss a few tiles and the onsens although maintained clean desperately need renovation. We are used to sharing bathroom with other guests in ryokan but one toilet for roughly 5 rooms with a few people in each room is seriously not enough once fully booked. However, we enjoyed the stay overall!
I loved the private baths. There are three types of private hot springs (rock, wood, and open air) which guests can book at night and in the morning for 1 hour without extra fees. I tried all types of baths and they were wonderful. The staffs were very kind, telling me information around the hotel. The location was good, just near the bus stop and 15 min walk from Beppu Station.
The staff there could speak english, and helped explain the facilities such as the different onsens. Room was pretty big for one person. Rock onsen was quite unique.
The rooms arent soundproof, so if the other guests are noisy you could hear them.
I loved my stay at Kagaya. The staff was super friendly (two spoke fluent English) and helpful. I loved being able to enjoy the baths, which can be rented privately twice a day. I rented the room in the annex which was perfect for me. Very quiet, spacious, and comfortable.
I wish there was a wifi amplifier for the annex. I wasn't able to grab a consistent connection and had to use my computer in the main lobby. Not a huge deal though, as I didn't need my computer much.
this Hotel is by the Beppu coast line, the big plus is that it has 3 private onsen which you can book in 1hr slot between 6am - 11am and 5pm-12midnight. 11-5pm the onsens are open to public but i didnt see anyone come in. We stayed in a japanese room/tatami mat but shared toilet.
Unable to control the Onsen water temp since it's centrally controlled. We almost always come back late and the water is EXTREMELY hot because they will turn on the pump between 10pm-11pm to ensure water remains hot overnight before turning it on again at 6am.
The staff is fantastic. They work very hard to make this dump as pleasant as possible. They were very patient with non-Japanese speakers. They always had a smile and pleasant greetings.
Where to begin…I think this place was new in the 60s? That’s my guess based on it appearing to have all original carpet, wall coverings, windows- everything! Retro is cool BUT falling apart, stained, and grubby is not cool. The dingy room had only glazed over windows (no view) and the odd scent of a cucumber salad. Only the sheets and takata were crisp and clean. Then there’s a list of things that didn’t work: the light switch by the sink, the toilet that moved when sat upon, the tub in the room, the hot water for the onsen shower, and more. A sign said you had to wait a minute for hot water but when it came it lasted only long enough to be half rinsed and didn’t return- I gave up after 15 minutes and enjoyed (not) a cold shower. We used the rock onsen and the ceiling dripped and there was a huge crack in one of the support beams in the ceiling. We should have known the place was not too great when we saw the back wall of the building overgrown with some plants and sagging a bit like an Akiya.
There are 3 types of onsen, Open-air/Rock/wooden bath. I could enjoy two times for night and morning. It was prettier than pictures and good to release stress. Workers are all nice and kind. there are fridge and hot water machine in shared area. And i could rent hair dryer from counter. It was close to Kitahama bus stop taking less than 5 min on foot.
toilet inside room was bit small.
Located at the centre of the town. Private onsen is available
Shared restroom
A great stay with private onsen in three variants. You can't say no to that! :)Almost exactly under the Beppu Tower and not that far from the Beppu Station, makes it convenient for travels outside of Beppu. Close-by is a ticket center for all bus companies that operate in Beppu, so another plus. And you can't ignore the super tasty restaurant that is like 3 minutes away from here :)Rooms are spacious and surprisingly well isolated for Japan (you learn to appreciate it during winter :D )...but after 1 hour of private bathtime in hotsprings, you don't mind a bit of an colder air getting into your room haha.
Area is not exactly the most picturesque but that is to be expected from the city center. Still, the hotel makes you feel safely isolated from the noise and lights outside, so no complains here :)
Beautiful old building/ryokan style. 3 onsen which you can reserve as private for one hour. Spacious room. Free coffee machine. Convenient location close to the City center/train station. Nice and helpful, english speaking staff.
3 style private onsen. Staff very friendly and helpful.
it’s in a great location, spacious and the room is very comfortable, the 3 different types of private baths are great
you can see that the building is over 50years old and nothing has changes since than.. a bit of fixing, painting and correcting a few little issues here and there are needed.
the staff was exceedingly friendly. the hot spring stone bath was excellent if a bit hot for me. the room was spacious and large and very japanese styled. futon was nice.
the place was a bit old and not super well maintained, but fantastic for the price.
A wonderful Ryokan in a great location. Our hosts were very kind and helpful, and also spoke English. I didn't realise they had 3 different private hot spring baths, and that we can use them all! The room was lovely and traditional. Also, parking was very convenient.
The only thing is there is only 1 western style toilet for everyone. The only other option for a woman is the squatting floor toilet. During peak season, I could imagine you may need to wait, however it wasn't an issue during my stay.
