- The location was lovely. It is away from the crowds in Taormina, and an easy bus ride to Taormina so no need to drive and find parking. The bus stop is right outside the hotel. The view of Mount Etna from the balcony was amazing, even though it looked more like a big hill due to the distance. Mount Etna was gently sending smoke into the air but we could not smell it. The charming hotel restaurant is a one minute walk, and the chef was excellent. The chef made a delicious potato soup for us that was not on the menu. We ate there a few times as it was so convenient, after full days in Taomina. The hotel is just below the village Castelmola, which is just a short walk or rather a couple of flights of stairs. It is definitely worth a visit. Castelmola is a very beautiful village with very friendly and helpful locals. The location of the hotel makes for a very easy visit. Villa Sonia is an older hotel decorated with antiques. It looks from the outside that there are only two or three floors, But our room was on the 6th floor. It is built on a hillside. We would definitely stay here again. The staff were amazing especially David at the front desk.
Cons -
- Bathroom had many leaks and was not cleaned to a standard I would expect from a hotel like this. Found a much better hotel without the view, what Relais 147 had was a far better experience and surroundings. Also the hotel restaurant a was a rIp off.
- Small room and shower.
- There is a bar on one of the lower floors (I forget the floor number) and a breakfast terrace. It was late in October and they close at 530pm and at 5pm we visited. The Barista was busy cleaning up and so we just said good evening, and went on the terrace. He said it was closing soon. We said we just wanted to see. Unfortunately, the door was already set to lock behind us, and after no more than 5 minutes, we decided to go back inside, It was before 5:15pm, but could not get in, and all the other exits were locked with padlocks. There was minimal lighting, we banged on the glass door, but the Barista had already gone. If one of us had a medical emergency, it would have been a catastrophe. We finally found an entrance on the side, up a flight of stairs that led to bedrooms. When I told the front desk (not David), the man did not acknowledge our distress, or recognize the possible severity of the situation, and he trivialised by laughing and saying something to the effect of, it is like a treasure hunt finding the door. I am addressing this here so higher management is aware of the problem in case another older couple, are not so mobile to go on a treasure hunt. At least put a phone or emergency button on the outside. Also the vases of flowers on the breakfast tables are a bit dusty. Finally, every now and then, the shower drain smelled. It was not the maid, it is the internal plumbing.

We had a perfect view of snow capped Mt. Etna from our own terrace. Loved all the antiques, swimming pool, various terraced areas to sit. The bar was always available. Breakfast room was beautiful. Private parking area was easy.
I can’t think of any dislikes.

Breakfast is ridiculous they charge for capuccino , eggs , and a lot of products
Totally relaxing, quiet close to Serrento and Pasitano parking convenient, staff helpful breakfast wast perfect!
options for drinks and food at the pool area but we made do and nothing was bad just more choices would would have been nice
The views were spectacular. The accomodations were beautiful with old world charm and elegance. A wonderful location far enough away frm town for a serene vacation yet close enough to experience the bustle of Toarmino when wanted.
There wasn't anything not to love.
Perfect for a nice stay. Big rooms. Nice pool. Good food. Quite and very good location. The bus to center Taormina stops in front of the hotel. Around 1.5€ person. You can have a nice walk and few good restaurants outside the hotel. Perfect for family. Or to leave the crowd and chaos of center
Nothing to add
The staff was great and the location and view from the hotel was absolutely stunning. The restaurant had the BEST pizza we have ever had and the restaurant staff was wonderful. We were able to meet Nick the pizza maker to thank him!
We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Villa Sonia. The location was perfect, and the views were absolutely breathtaking. One of the highlights was being able to see an eruption from Mt. Etna right from the hotel — it was an incredible sight and made our kids so happy!
There were a few noticeable downfalls during our stay. The room cleanliness wasn’t at its best, and the room itself was not as comfortable as we had hoped. The hotel restaurant, which was recommended by the staff, ended up being a disappointing experience.Additionally, when we asked about the public parking lot located right across from the hotel, we were advised to use the hotel’s own parking instead. Their parking was located much lower down the hill, requiring about a 4–5 minute uphill hike back to the room. At the end of our stay, we found out we were charged the same daily rate as the more convenient public parking lot, which was a bit frustrating.
The Hotel is beautiful and very comfortable. The breakfast and staff were amazing. The only bad thing I would say is it far from the main streets. The hotel does offer a shuttle so you can take in all the sites and stores the city has to offer. The view from our room of Mt Etna was perfect.
The views were fantastic and the staff were both friendly and very helpful
The drive up to it was a bit scary with numerous hairpin bends and very narrow roads . However the view was well worth it
Only good part was the view on the Etna
The staff is unfriendly, hotel is very poor everything is old and there is a terrible smell everywhere
Classic Sicilian older well maintained hotel. Located in a lovely village with panoramic views above Taormina. Some may be put off because it is not a sterile modern hotel but we enjoyed the authentic ambiance. The room was large, comfortable, and clean. Wifi was effective. Excellent breakfast. Better to take the shuttle (10 min ride) that stops in front of the hotel to Taormina than to drive car because parking is limited.
No major complaints.
Sitting on top of the hill, having the best view to etna is great! But the hotel itself is really old, which i normally
Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. Incredible view from the spacious balcony attached to my room, and from the common areas like the lounge and pool areas.
Nothing, everything was exceptional.
We were able to park our car outside the hotel and check in with our luggage before parking the car in their car park. Our room and bathroom were spacious with plenty of cupboards. The staff on reception were wonderful and since we were only staying one night took advantage of their shuttle service into and return from Taormina. Francesco who drove us, was a mine of information. There is also a bus stop opposite the hotel with regular buses to and from the Taormina centre. We had a balcony attached to our room which had great views over Taormina to Mt Etna. Breakfast was full on buffet served on the terrace so that we could take advantage of the views. There is a lovely pool and sunning area on the same level. We wished we had spent another night here but had an hotel booked the next day in Cefulu. Would recommend this hotel for a number of night stays.
Fantastic views of Etna from our room. Nice sun deck with bar and lunch. Close to the town at the top.
The pool was freezing cold.
Spacious rooms and lovely bathroom. Bonus was the couch, extra chairs and fabulous balcony. Breakfast was sensational and nice hot coffee. The bar/restaurant is also fantastic. Overall exceptional stay.
Staff very friendly and helpful Great location and views from swimming pool areaBreakfast very good as was good in restaurant
Shower rather old and unappealing
