Pros +
- What stood out for me, as with my first visit 12 years ago, was the exceptional service and kindness by all the staff. Each person takes the time to speak with you and inquires about your stay to see if there is anything which they may be able to help with. In addition, Laxman is amazing chef who truly enjoys creating his daily specials which are enjoyed by all the guests. Great vibes, great comfort, and a wealth of local knowledge at the Shangri-La Boutique Hotel!
- The staff and the owner are so welcoming. The location is perfect if you want to be close to the action. I’ve stayed there a few times and I met a lot of returning travelers.
- Great budget hotel in Thamel....esp oriented toward those keen on a good location at a very affordable price.
Cons -
- All good for the backpacker/budget market
- I booked a deluxe double with a garden terrace on booking.com but got a small twin room with cracked mouldy tiles and no hot water. I asked about the deluxe double I booked and was told all rooms are the same, there is no deluxe double and no rooms have garden terraces, what did I expect for the price I paid. They also told me the included breakfast was available from 7.00 or 7.30 (can’t recall) but when I went about 8.00, the place was empty with no staff. It took a while for reception to track down the cook, who was having a shower, so I was rushed for my 9.00 meeting with the trekking company.
- The bed wasn’t clean. No regular cleaning of bed sheet and towel. Common toilet wand bathroom was not comfortable. Hot water didn’t not work always. Water pressure from shower was bad.

The room was lovely and the rooftop space was great. Best breakfasts in Nepal!! Lots of fruit, juices, coffee and a hot meal (changes everyday).
Lovely hotel with super friendly staff. My third visit in 12 years. Will always return whenever I’m in Kathmandu. Thank you KK for taking such good care of me!
Everything was fine. Transfer from the airport after arrival ok. Tasty and large breakfasts. Nice staff, willing to help. Good hotel in the center of Thamel.
Great location, friendly helpful reception staff, can’t beat the price

Shangrila Boutique Hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu, is truly a great value for money. We were very pleased with what we got during our stay. The staff was really friendly. A special mention goes to the owner, who is incredibly friendly and always ready to lend a helping hand to everyone. This hotel combines excellent service with a welcoming atmosphere.
While our stay at Shangrila Boutique Hotel had its positives, several issues negatively impacted our experience:1. Hot Water Problems: We faced issues with hot water in the bathroom twice during our stay. As we usually shower at night, both my wife and I had to endure icy cold showers. Unfortunately, the issue was only resolved on the day we checked out, which was too late to benefit us.2. Missing Amenities: The room description mentioned a heater and a hot kettle, but neither was provided. As a result, we felt quite cold at night, which made our stay less comfortable.3. Currency Conversion and Payment Issues: Booking.com does not show the amount in Nepalese currency, and the hotel converted the USD amount at a higher-than-market rate, causing us to pay more than anticipated. On top of that, when I opted to pay by card, they added a 5% surcharge, citing it as a bank charge. This was particularly disappointing, as none of the other hotels we stayed at imposed such fees. Afterward, I paid in cash at a higher exchange rate. These issues, particularly the missing amenities and payment policies, detracted from an otherwise decent stay.
The location and the staff behaviour.
The owner of this location is very miser, when the guest wants to book flight ticket then the owner of this hotel will take commission in every aspect including phone to flight ticket agent and the owner will also takes the payment in his own currency exchange rate. He just wants to take advantage of the situation. The owner only wants money with commission.
The owner and the whole staff have been lovely and very helpful towards us, we definitely recommend this place for any traveller in Nepal. The hotel is well situated in Thamel in a quiet alley, which is perfect for such a busy area
Rooms were comfortable, food was delicious, and staff were exceptionally welcoming and helpful. Conveniently, they also helped us to organise a trek at a very reasonable price and were very flexible with our itinerary and start date. Could not recommend highly enough, thanks to KK and the team!
Lovely, helpful staff and walkable distance to all main attractions. Nice breakfast and comfortable room with private bathroom. Would stay again!
No AC in the room, only a fan so it can get warm
Great location Bathroom could be better but what can you do Staff amazing Free water and coffee
Grear location, great staff, great breakfasr, nice rooftop
I didn’t like it that the manager kept trying to sell us travel deals.
I had a very pleasant stay! It was very affordable so great value. Good location in Thamel. I received a drink when I arrived and the breakfast in the morning was great. It was very clean and staff were very friendly. I booked a 4 person dorm room and had it all to myself which was a great bonus.
Nil complaints.
Location is perfect in the middle of Thamel and close to some attractions to do even by foot. Room is spacious. Bed was comfy and lockers were wide. Staff were so nice and helpful. Free Breakfast was the best part of the stay (nice variety of a menu à la carte). I also liked the tour guide services they offer for extra fees.
Lockers do not lock digitally or even manually. There was plenty of small ants in the room and locker.
I and my friend loved the morning breakfasts on the rooftop. We loved the room with comfy beds, and especially all the assistance we got from the front desk. No matter what questions we asked, we got good advice and help. We went on a short trip to Pokhara, and we could store some luggage until we came back. I highly recommend this hotel.
Nothing. Everything was perfect!
The location was nice and the staff were friendly. I especially thought the staff at reception were kind and courteous, and always willing to help. They are the highlight of the hotel.
Could have been cleaner. There were cockroaches at night and lots of little ants in the room that would get into everything, including my toothpaste. For the breakfast the coffee machine wasn't working so they were only offering Nescafé. Also, no dairy free options which is a small thing that can be done to help people that don't consume dairy enjoy their morning coffee/tea.
Location, helpful and warm-hearted staff, great breakfast, beautiful roof top
Facility too old, wooden bunk bed full of ants, window shield’s broken, shower room floor crispy and broken, no curtain in shower room’s window. Wouldn’t recommend summer, other seasons might be a lot better.
