About

Sombra del Agua, the most emblematic hotel in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, offers its guests a unique experience in each stay, in a historical monument dating from 1907 that has been adapted with modern and elegant facilities and that welcomes its visitors with refined and attentive service. In our restaurant Tarumba we present you a menu of origin where the experience begins by interacting with the environment, Tarumba tastes like comales made of clay, smiles that are born from the heart, at hands that from ancient tradition know the spiritual by bringing it to a table;Service hours: 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sombra del Agua is a 2-minute walk to La Paz Square and Central Park, in San Cristóbal de las Casas. This charming colonial city has beautiful cobbled streets and many historic buildings.

    Pros +

    • Hotel is very pretty, the entire hotel is very clean, cozy and quiet, great staff too. They allowed us to stay 2 hrs after checkout and helped us find a doctor as one of us got very ill our last day. Walking distance to just about everywhere.
    • Beautiful property - common areas very presentable. The restaurant food was excellent. The service - everyone was professional. The location is ideal walkable to everything.
    • The staff were warm and welcoming. They ensured my stay was super pleasant and were responsive to small accommodations I requested. The building is impeccably kept and the courtyard is one of the loveliest dining spaces I know in San Cristóbal.

    Cons -

    • The breakfast buffet was our least favorite.
    • The mattresses need to be updated and some of the rooms have no outside sun light or windows.
    • the breakfast menu options were limited, although the food itself was fresh and well prepared.

Beautiful Spanish colonial–style building with a lovely atmosphere. The interior design blends modern Mexican style very nicely, and the garden is stylish and well maintained. The location is excellent, easy to walk around the historic center. The staff were very kind, professional, and helpful, which made our stay pleasant.A charming and well-located hotel with great design and attentive staff. A very good choice in San Cristóbal, especially if you plan early excursions.

the breakfast menu options were limited, although the food itself was fresh and well prepared.

Prime location right in the middle of San Cristobal, very close to every tour we had and all three andadores. Room was nice and spacious, staff was helpful.

Worth mentioning lack of hot water an water pressure. But we managed and overall good experience

The bed was very comfortable. The staff was amazing. The location was perfect. What I had for dinner at the restaurant was delicious and creative.

The location of the room was next to a very loud busy street. Luckily I am an early riser or I would have been requesting a room change because of it.

Overall a wonderful place with friendly staff in a convenient location.

We had two rooms. One was more functional than the other, which had an odd and inconvenient layout. The staff was kind, but sometimes a little clueless. There was only lukewarm water in the shower, and the water pressure was weak. The parking lot is some distance away from the hotel.

Everything was exceptional, the location, the food, the service. They even contact me to send a taxi to the airport to pick me up. The decorations are beautiful.

Loved everything the beds were super comfortable and all was clean

The only issue was the water in the showers couldnt regulate the cold water seemed to run out

    The staff is great

The rooms are dark!! And have windows to the halls so you can listen everything. Honestly I couldn’t sleep because there are tours at 4:00 am and the neighbors make a lot of noise, even when I complain. The towels are dirty

Elegant and stylish hotel near town’s historic center. Comfortable bed. Fabulous restaurant.

There is no comfortable “commons area” where one can relax, read, have a glass of wine, converse. The courtyard is botanically lovely, but the furniture is hard, uncomfortable, and cheap.

    10BarbaraPosted on: 5-10-2025

Very clean, and the bed was comfortable. The room is spacious and the staff was nice and helpful. The location is perfect and near everything.

    No complaints

I love this hotel and come once or twice a year on buying trips. The staff is lovely, the rooms and simple, elegant and clean with well-made and designed wood furniture...the two courtyards are so pretty and you can relax in the bigger one surrounded by greenery and dappled sunlight after a long day. Elegant, stylish, clean and in a perfect location. I love it!

Very central location. The property is an old colonial house, which is really beautiful and very well maintained. The food in the restaurant is just delicious and the staff extremely professional.

The rooms are very basic. The rooms are very loud from the street, 24 hours, even on the second floor.A bit too expensive for what it is.

    10AlejandroPosted on: 4-26-2025

The suite was so beautiful and comfortable, the staff was always willing to help and with good attitude, the spa was so good, room service very efficient and the restaurant was delicious

    Everything was on point

Inclusive car park and location within the historical city and beautiful setting and cleanliness

I recommend Hotel Sombra del Agua with enthusiasm!Excellent location - right in the center of town. Yet the floor plans, massive architecture and good building materials insulate it from the city's noise. It is a heavenly oasis.Impeccable, attentive service, to the most minute details by a staff who is both highly professional and compassionate. Luxurious comfort for affordable prices. The hotel is super clean and very well maintained. The hotel's restaurant's chef is one Mexico's top 100 chefs and his food is both traditional and creative.

I wish more of the hotel staff would speak English -- it is unfortunate that English has become the dominant language of international communication. Likewise, the hot water pressure will gain from improvement.

Comfy beds, lovely shower, staff were very helpful and friendly. Could sit in the restaurant and play cards in the evening having a drink. Breakfast was amazing.

Not enough vegetarian food on the main menu. But plenty of places nearby.
