Pros +
- Excellently situated for the Town Centre
- Lots of character, good access and parking and an excellent breakfast.
- The previous home of John Barry. A lovely bar and the hotel hosts music nights and different events. A comfy room with everything that you need. We visited in February and got a good price of £114 for 2 nights It was two miles away from York but we enjoyed the walk.. £8 in an Uber or plenty of buses to York centre.
Cons -
- Paying £15 to park there when you've paid to stay in their hotelBreakfast was awful I had to ask twice to order mine as they kept walking past meRock solid poached eggs hardly cooked sausage and it literally looked like somebody had thrown it on the plate from across the roomVery slow on filling up Breakfast items when they ran outRooms clean and quite comfy Outdated decor but we got a deal on the room so can't complain about that!

The location.
There was no lunch or dinner was available at the hotel as the restaurant has closed except for breakfast. The corridors and room smelt bad, as if vermin had died behind the walls. The hotel has gone seriously downhill in the last few years. It was sad to see this beautiful house in decline. The staff did not ask us how our stay was. Perhaps they knew how we would have answered.
Very clean Loved the bar area .Shame they don’t do evening food Breakfast was a hot buffet on the Sunday but they took a hot breakfast order on the Monday.Staff very helpful and polite. We asked for a quiet room and it was very quiet .Bus really easy into York
Room was a bit tired and needed updating No toiletries provided on the second night and had to wait almost a hour when requested shower gel for this to arrive
Location was o.k.
Not until booked in, were we told food was not available (so had to go out for food in the evening). Parking was extra, but there was no mention on any of my printed paperwork of that!, when I questioned I was told it was clear when booking (sure it was not ). Room was tired and bathroom was not clean.
Pleasant stay, staff friendly, convenient location, good size room, decor little tired but overall good
Staff
The staff are without exception welcoming warm friendly polite helpful and knowledgeable. We only ate breakfasts here, which were different on weekdays to weekends but the choice on each day was good. We particularly enjoyed the a la carte weekday options but the weekend buffet gave us the chance to eat quickly and get out to explore early.
There was a small step in the bedroom that was not immediately obvious and a potential trip hazard-a warning sign or prior mention of this would have been helpful.
very pleasant and helpful staff
My room was very hot but when I reported it I was told it would be looked at
Breakfast was very nice plenty of choice, location was great for us 35 mins walk to York centre, buses passed every 20 mins if walking isn't your thing
Good
£15 parking for 8 hours was a bit excessive but with no restaurant available in the evening it was a deal breaker won’t be staying again
The breakfast was good, they gave us a quiet room as requested and the staff were very helpful.
Nothing,all good
Location is decent and one of the dining areas has a nice 'regal' look to it.
Staff were pretty average tbh. The carpark is an additional paid expense which was super annoying given that it's not inside the city centre and they have plenty of space. Main reason I booked it over others was to park the car.The room walls and ceilings must be made of thin cardboard. I literally didn't sleep for even one hour on the night I stayed there. Could hear the TV's and conversations of both the rooms either side of me and above me must have been a dancing team practicing or something because even with earplugs in it was incredibly loud all through the night and early morning. They had a kind of cool looking 'reading room' which would have been ideal to pull out a laptop and do some work, but it was filled with signs saying 'No working in this room on laptops'! Could be a great place if a savvy operator could come in and improve things. Just need to spend a bit of money painting and sound proofing, updating the fixtures etc and it would actually be pretty cool. It's just a bit run down at the moment.
Stayed a few times .Everything is perfect .location ,hotel, lovley frendly staff ,Rooms are lovley & clean ,10/10
Everything
The location was great and the staff friendly and helpful.
Carrying cases up the stairs!
Location was ok nice old style building
The breakfast wasn't all that good, and was limited in the bar
Close to the city of York , Good location.
Room number 53,Hot water took a long time to come out of the tap and shower over ten minutes not good. Hall way door, (firedoor) near my room makes a noise on open and close, hallway landing floor very noisy when people walk over it.Kitchen staff make lots of noise preparing for start of there day at 6am cooking breakfast etc The room i was in was not a quiet centre of the hotel.Green mold on outside slabs (sandstone slabs) slippery when wet from rain walking to the car park.No front house door key when you turn up late in the night. No fresh water bottles as a drink in your room. Not even a biscuit like a (rich tea biscuit) to have with your coffee.Shower leaks water around the side near toilet when you us it.Carpet needs a better clean .Staff on waiter service need better training. Don't stand at entrance and making you feel uncomfortable when you are having your breakfastThere was no green teas , just one brandof tea,When you was having breakfast. Same in your room. There's are simple tasks to sort out to make it a better stay.
Its position - every bus in York seemed to go past- so easy to get around and home. It’s homeliness and staff
Phone not working even though staff said it was fixed.Lights out in corridor- required a torch - supplied by staff- to access door key.
A hidden gem, only a short taxi ride into york at £8.Staff were fantastic and the price is amazing compared to other hotels in York.
If grade II listed building are your thing then this place could well be up your street
It’s looking a little dated. Paint peeling off window frames, bath tub had three repair holes in it. Wasn’t impressed with my early morning call which I thought was a racehorse going to the toilet at 6am on my first morning but that’s one downside of having a room directly above that appears to have the toilet located overhead of your bed.Thought charging £15 a night to park in the car park was a bit steep. This extra charge was not flagged up by booking.com until we had made our reservation. The price of parking was not known until we checked in
