- Almost total lack of surfaces to put things on or anywhere to sit in the room apart from the bunks. No shelves, tables or chairs.
- There was no WiFi in the room. The bulb in the porch was not working despite being reported. There didn’t seem to be lounging area if you’re not using the restaurant/bar.

The Lounge was stylish and comfortable, comparable with an hotel. Good breakfast too.
Almost total lack of surfaces to put things on or anywhere to sit in the room apart from the bunks. No shelves, tables or chairs.
The location was good. You can walk by the river to the city or through the main road. The breakfast was nice and also a few choices. The staff were nice. The place was clean. The pool table entertained the whole family. Nice outdoor area.
There was no WiFi in the room. The bulb in the porch was not working despite being reported. There didn’t seem to be lounging area if you’re not using the restaurant/bar.
Great location and price. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, Self catering facilities were great, the place was clean and beds were comfy.
Good value for money. Stayed two nights with children. Clean and basic accommodation.
Our room was located at the far end of the building on the second floor, and the only exit is through reception with key card access. With children, this felt a bit inconvenient. When we asked about moving to a room closer to the entrance, we were told the hostel was fully booked, and relocation would require an additional £30.
We booked a family room and I was pleasantly surprised with the layout, with bunk beds in the main room and a double bed on a mezzanine floor; affording everyone a little more privacy. The staff were welcoming and it was helpful to be able to use the luggage room prior to check in time, so we could explore York.
The mattress on the double bed was quite thin and not very comfortable. We didn’t drive but the car park was full and people were queuing for spaces.
Breakfast was exceptional, the staff was extremely helpful, the youth hostel was clean, the room was spacious, beds were comfortable, everything was perfect. Will definitely stay again
Everything!Fantastic staff, facilities and location.
Fantastic location and the staff were very welcoming. This is a historic building, the Rowntree family home. Stunning location close to the towpath walk of less than a mile into town. The staff had no knowledge of the history of the place which was a little disappointing. The food looked good although we didn't try it.Booking in and checking out was easy and very pleasant.
There were 2 small toilets and 2 small showers between 4 dorms, minimum of 16 guests. There were no hooks in the toilet, to place your bag on.The showers consisted of the shower tray and that's it, no hooks, nowhere to put a towel or clean clothes except on the floor. Not surprisingly they got wet as there is also no shower curtain. Nowhere to put shampoo etc either, literally nothing but a shower. In my dorm there were 4 beds and 4 hooks. 1 small cupboard with 2 spaces, 1 could be locked and the other was open, both areas had been claimed when I arrived, all my stuff had to be left on the floor. There are no privacy curtains, which i guess is for health and safety but I have stayed in multiple hostels with curtains worldwide, it makes a huge difference when someone wants to stay up until 1am doom scrolling. And of course, the obligatory fire alarm going off at 4.30am is always fun ?
Great location, easy access into city center and great parking.
Beds were VERY hard and was strange that the beds were up the stairs. Stairs were very narrow and not very accessible in the dark.No cups or glasses to have a drink from.
Staff weee exceptionally helpful and friendly, well run, beautiful YHA in a fab location for exploring York!
Well equipped self catering kitchens, lovely showers, very helpful and friendly staff, welcoming social space
The ambiance
The management refused to extend our stay by only one day and they made us feel like we don't belong there. I was finalizing on my family accomodation where the process took an extra day to be verified. Had to transfer to a different hotel. Sad truth ?
The staff was friendly and helpful, the food was great, and the room was clean and comfortable. The walk to town along the river is absolutely gorgeous and feels very safe. Altogether a great experience.
The shared shower smelled a bit mildewy but I have a very sensitive nose and my daughter disagreed with me about the smell. Also, we couldn't access the WiFi in our room, but the staff said this is a known issue and they're working with the internet provider to resolve it. WiFi in common areas was fine.
Cheaper than anywhere else in York and the cafe is very nice.
Tiny bathroom sinks that were impossible to use without spilling water everywhere.
The whole YHA experience was excellent as ever. The reception and bar area were really well run, spacious and comfy too.
The accommodation is clean and the staff is super nice.
The location is a bit remote from city centre. Although it’s only about 30-min walk, the lane is quiet and a little scary to walk at night
Location is excellent. You can walk along the River House and will be at the heart of York in 15 minutes. Kitchen facilities were exceptional; clean and used by all staying at the hotel.
We were in one of the courtyard rooms with a double bed and bunk beds. My mattress was not the best and I didn't sleep very well.
Great value. We , as a family had the 6 bed ensuite so that was great. Don't know if I'd be to keen in a dormitory but if you want to see York on the cheap, this is definitely worth consideration. Bring a towel!!
