Pros +
- Location, comfort, friendly staff
- The location and atmosphere of this hotel is incredible. It's a stone's thrown from the York Minster and walkable to everything. The restaurant and garden are also great.
- The staff were absolutely fab and helpful. They offered to help with our bags, grabbed ice when we wanted to eat in, and made storage easy with my wheelchair. The room was so comfortable and loved the floors. We wanted to stay longer!
Cons -
- No. It was the best hotel on our trip around Britain
- The bed in my room felt like it was on an angle like not quite flat.
- The water pressure in shower was great, but shower head could be more rainfall as space of cubicle is not large enough to avoid splashing. Also, it would be great to have a bath rack as space is tight. Towel holder behind the door would be great.

The staff are so helpful , the bed was so comfortable andthe breakfast was exceptional
Too hot in bedroom , need to open window , no wardrobe. Very dark in the room , broken socket in bathroom , electrical socket too low , had to put kettle on floor. Had to kneel on floor to use hairdryer
Location, Staff and breakfast
Room very small, dark and dingy. Poor fitting window which let cold draft in all night
Such a warm welcome and I was late Staff very helpful Breakfast was good lots of choices and well cooke Had fish and chips one night excellent Great location bed very comfortable of choices
Wish I could have stayed longer
The location was close to everything.
Really hot. Couldn¿t open the window at night because street was loud. Listing said breakfast was included, but it wasn¿t.
The hotel is quirky, clean and has a certain atmosphere that echoes ¿old England¿. It has a great menu and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The location is great it allows easy walking access to the city.
Our room was on the top floor and required climbing seven sets of extremely narrow stairs (difficult with suitcase in hand!) the room it¿s self was small lacked a mini bar or fridge. The room was extremely hot and the window was screwed shut!
Small room for a double a couple would struggle It doesn't feel clean very dark and low ceiling the toilet seat was broken The mattress was lumpy not comfy at all hard to sleep the windows Screwed closed I ate in the hotel 1 night food well over
Location
Location great, great outdoor garden
Quirky toilet & shower doors didn,t work properly, advised staff no action taken.
Location
Didn’t get booked in properly , which caused hassle to sort it out , building covered in scaffold , could get into the bar area for over 40 mins even though we were residents , just very average all round for money
This is a great little inn above the restaurant so you’ll be climbing. The pub is great, as is the location. The staff was extremely helpful.
Room and inside decor, Nice outside space at the pub, friendly and helpful staff. When we dropped off our bags, staff told us when our room would be ready (a little early) and took our bags up to our room for us.
Nothing. It is above an old pub, so it lacks A/C (there is a good fan in the room) and has stairs, but that was all clear before we booked and not an issue for us.
The staff were awesome. The attic room was very nice, better than our previous room (earlier stay in the same week). Having fans in the room was so helpful.
We could have used a little more space in the bathroom to place toiletries. The wifi did not reach our room during our first visit--it did work for some others but not for us.
The room was AMAZING for what I paid. It was 3x larger than any room I stayed in this week and for the same cost (or less). It was decorated tastefully, and felt cozy. The staff let me check in 20 min before 4p, which was nice. The bathroom was large and the shower was huge.
Everything was fine the only moan i have is the room had an air con unit outside my window making a noise plus it overlooked the beer garden, so there was a bit of noise from that too. The hotel does however, supply earplugs for you which i used on the second night and slept like a baby. Thanks
Excellent location and room. Shower was great and the heating worked well. Breakfast was also fantastic. Staff very friendly, great to chat with.
Room isn’t completely soundproof, with the window open I could hear the jazz musicians at the venue a few doors down at night - which I loved! Sound is muffled when window is closed but still not completely quiet. I am a deep sleeper so still had my usual excellent sleep but would not suit someone who sleeps lightly.
The pub was cosy, the food excellent, the room lovely and the location fantastic. Annoyingly, my husband and I were both taken ill during our stay, and the staff were so kind and helpful. We'll definitely come back.
Bear in mind that this is a busy pub, in the centre of a vibrant city, so if you're likely to be bothered by standard Saturday night/ pub noises drifting up into your room, it might not be for you.
Location, food
The brewery delivery at 6am on easter Monday right under our window lasting around an hour . Very noisy throughout. Prior to this around 5am the dustbin men also came. I understand beer needs to be delivered but 6am on a bank holiday when you have sleeping guests
The Fat Badger's location at the city gate is simply unbeatable. Cozy room, excellent tea selection and genuinely helpful staff. A perfect York base.
Charming old windows that offer a direct audio feed of York's nightlife and the garbage symphony. Pack earplugs if you're a delicate sleeper!
