    Pros +

    • Excellent staff and excellent breakfast,
    • Perfect stay for my wife and I on New Year's eve. The hotel is a beautiful historical building and the rooms are very nicely furnished, comfortable and quiet. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was superb and the dining room overlooked the private gardens and the city walls. Apart from breakfast we didn't eat in the restaurant as it was fully booked but the hotel recommended other local restaurants for us.
    • I’ve never had a perfect 10 / 10 stay at a hotel before as I’m quite fussy , however there’s no fault to be found. The building is unique & the staff were the best I’ve ever been hosted by.The owner herself is a lovely woman & we really can’t wait to go back !

    Cons -

    • Although the room was large with some nice period furniture it lacked atmosphere The bathroom had very limited toiletriesNo fridge
    • Parking was convenient but i do think it should have been included in the overall cost of the stay. The breakfast could’ve been much better. I think a continental buffet would have been better. The eggs Benedict was bland. There weren’t many options on the menu.
    • The room was overly hot even though I turned down the radiator. The bed creaked terribly, understandable due to its age I suppose. I asked for a 'Bailey's' in the bar and they only have an inferior make. I ordered tea with my breakfast which unfortunately wasn't very hot, I asked for it to be topped up but this wasn't hot either.

Beautiful room and hotel in general. Great parking for the duration of our stay. Very central location, just around the corner from the York Minster.

A wonderful hotel in a great location, very close to all the shops and to York Minster. The hotel is beautiful, such a wonderful old building with a fantastic history. Very comfortable. The breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice. The staff were all excellent, very friendly and helpful. We felt very relaxed and happy staying there and will definitely go and stay there again.

The room was lovely with a great view. It was nice to have plenty of drinking water supplied and there was ample tea and coffee supplies. The bathroom was great, a super shower, brilliant lighting around the mirror and nice toiletries.Breakfast was delicious and the service good. The lady on reception was exceptionally nice and very accommodating. A gift bag of water and flapjacks on check out was lovely.

Good breakfast, fantastic location, very interesting building and bathrooms were high spec

Would have preferred more options to eat in the hotel; there was very limited availability in the restaurant and having had the tasting menu on one night we would have liked to eat there again.

Really well run hotel in the old treasurer's house adjacent to the York Minster. Beautiful building, lovely rooms, fantastic garden within the city walls.

Expensive, but one could expect this in central York. Bow Room restaurant disappointing, and also pricey.

We had an incredible stay at this stunning hotel, rich with history and charm. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the elegant atmosphere and beautifully preserved details throughout the property. The staff were absolutely fantastic warm, welcoming, and always ready to help. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and their attention to detail truly made are stay special. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a memorable and relaxing experience.

Great location. Very comfortable considering the age and type of building. Beautiful garden.

Extremely expensive extras. Considering the location the room was a fair price but drinks and nibbles were ridiculously overpriced in my opinion. I am also a smoker and was surprised to find that smoking in the garden was prohibited. Why? Instead I had to smoke outside the front door Which seems a bit silly.

Breakfast was very good and the staff friendly. The room was nice but I thought it was quite expensive - I have stayed in a lot of the best hotels in York and it did not quite match the reviews it was given. But it was nice nonetheless.

The decor of the dining room was a bit too modern for the historical building. The pillows were not firm enough

Location is close to Minster and other York attractions, but hotel is quiet and calm. The gardens are a delight, staff cannot do enough for you, and food is excellent

Great location Staff were brilliant and really helpful Lovely hotel Slept like a new born baby A shame the weather was awful as the hotel garden looked fantastic Definitely would stay again

Tell the chef to put rosemary and thyme on the roast potatoes

Lovely breakfast but would like beans with it

Bath didn't hold water as there was no rubber on plug.Mentioned it but had no mention of compensation for our inconvenience is this supposedly 5 star hotel. Obviously having a working bath is not a necessity.

Everything. Kind attentive staff, a beautiful room that I only booked on the day, incredibly historic building and gardens, practically in the grounds of York Minster, private parking making it easy to explore York on foot, good Yorkshire breakfast, lovely bar area in the Long Room, peaceful and just what I needed as a short stopover on my drive up to Scotland.

Nothing. Just a couple of tips for other travellers : (1) there isn't a lift because this is a listed building and not allowed to convert it so if you are visiting with reduced mobility be aware you will have to walk up a couple of flights of stairs. Staff will help you with your luggage but not recommended if you are in a wheelchair or use mobility aids. (2) Their restaurant is closed on Tuesdays, not a problem because there are lots of interesting independent restaurants in York. I can recommend the York Minster Refectory only a few minutes walk away, excellent food.
