friendlieness of the staff
Location, breakfast buffet, friendliness of staff, clean hotel.
Weird ¿go back in time¿ charm. reminded me of Havana, Cuba or Dakar, Senegal. That raw retro luxury. I¿m referring to the public spaces: Entrance, main lobby, bar/restaurant , outdoor area. Didn¿t get to see the pool though. I enjoyed it.

Top Tips
- Reserve your Portsmouth hotel 60-90 days ahead for major naval events. This helps avoid 20-40% price surges during the May-October peak, especially for signature occasions like Norfolk Fleet Week, when local hotel inventory, particularly waterfront options, becomes limited. Check annual event calendars to time your booking.
- Factor in the 11-14% total occupancy tax on Portsmouth hotel bills. Expect a 5% state tax plus 6-9% local levies, and these apply whether you book direct or through an OTA. For full price transparency, request a detailed tax and fee breakdown before confirming your reservation.
- Stay in Old Town Portsmouth for safer, walkable access to attractions. The crime rate is about 30% below city average, with hotels within a 5-10 minute walk of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and riverfront dining. Use local maps to confirm walk times to specific sites.
- Request accessible rooms if needed, particularly in older waterfront hotels. While 70-80% of properties meet ADA requirements, always confirm elevator service and grab bars in advance. During hurricane season, allow extra time for mobility aid delivery due to potential weather delays.
- Verify that your hotel offers Wi-Fi speeds of at least 50-100 Mbps for remote work. Many mid-range hotels near the Elizabeth River deliver these speeds, but storm-related outages can occur in the summer. For a quieter stay, request an inland-facing room to reduce noise from naval activities after 10 PM.
- Prepare for possible power disruptions during hurricane season (June-November). Coastal Portsmouth sees power interruptions 10-20% more often than inland areas, so book hotels with generator backups, such as Hilton brands, and bring a portable charger for device reliability. Ask about backup power and emergency procedures when you check in.
- Use the Elizabeth River ferry for convenient cross-river trips. This Hampton Roads Transit line connects downtown Portsmouth (Olde Towne/High Street) and Norfolk’s Waterside, allowing you to bypass bridge traffic and parking constraints. Check the HRT schedule for current return times.
- Choose Portsmouth Olde Towne hotels for walkable riverfront dining and local landmarks. For a larger hotel selection or business needs, book in Norfolk near Waterside or the airport (ORF) to reduce intra-city transfers. Review property amenities before finalizing your choice.
- Request step-free access if booking a historic inn or small hotel in Olde Towne. Many lack elevators or have narrow hallways. Call in advance to reserve a ground-floor or accessible room, and confirm a roll-in, step-free route from parking to your room.
- For naval or ship event visits, book rooms earlier than usual and confirm base entry policies. Navy port visits drive high hotel demand in Hampton Roads, so reserve as soon as dates are announced and check ID or vehicle pass requirements with the relevant base.
- Clarify parking options before booking. Downtown and Olde Towne hotels may charge for limited on-site spaces, while city-run lots nearby are often less expensive. Ask about nightly parking fees and confirm lot gate hours so you can access your car late at night.
- Plan for evening logistics if you'll be out late. Portsmouth's dining and bar scene is focused on High Street in Olde Towne, but transit and ferry service often end after 10-11 PM. Confirm your hotel’s shuttle or rideshare options, or check the ferry schedule in advance for your return.
- Ask about Wi-Fi speed guarantees and quiet rooms to support remote work. Portsmouth hotels range from boutique to chain, so bandwidth and noise levels, including from High Street events, can vary; request both details and a room away from street or riverfront venues.
