I felt like I was staying at a friends house. I was greeting by name everytime I came in the door and we had some great conversations about the hotel and fort as well as things outside the area. I would book and stay here again.
I enjoyed Fort Scott historic downtown. It¿s one of nicest downtown scenes in Kansas. Beautifully decorated at Christmas time. The hotel is a few step from the historic shops and restaurants. Once you¿re there you can walk to everything.
The hotel is more about keeping to the authenticity of the building and not modern convenience. I had everything I needed and enjoyed the beauty of the old building.

Top Tips
- Book your hotel at least 21 days in advance for events like the Bourbon County Fair (late August) or Circuit Court trial weeks to secure rates between $75-$95 USD. Prices during these events can spike 35-50% for last-minute bookings.
- Choose hotels with central HVAC systems, since 70% of Fort Scott properties use window AC units that may struggle during summer temperatures above 95°F (35°C). Request a central HVAC room at booking for improved comfort during heat waves.
- Request a step-free, accessible room with a roll-in shower at newer motels like Best Western or Super 8. Only 3 of 12 hotels in Fort Scott advertise step-free access, and some accessible rooms may have thresholds greater than 2 inches, so clarify access needs when reserving.
- Wi-Fi speeds in budget motels average 10-15 Mbps. For remote work with HD video calls, confirm that your hotel has a dedicated business line or offers upload speeds above 5 Mbps before booking.
- Budget for a total hotel tax of 13.5% (6% state, 5.5% city, 2% county). Some online travel agencies may not include the 2% county tourism surcharge until checkout, adding $2-$3 USD per night on a $75 USD stay.
- Select properties with free parking and keypad entry, since 90% of motels offer free parking but only 4 of 12 provide keypad entry, which is important for late arrivals after front desks close (typically 10 PM-7 AM).
- Consider hotels on North 10th Street, where average noise levels are 50-58 dB, for a quieter stay. About 60% of motels on South Main Street report over 3 monthly noise complaints from rail traffic, with nighttime peaks reaching 78 dB.
