Top Tips
- Request a room away from I-57/US-45 to reduce noise. Most Manteno hotels are within 0.2-1 mile of the interchange, making roadside noise a primary disturbance for quieter sleep.
- Plan on using a car for travel, as public transit is minimal. The nearest Amtrak station in Kankakee is a 15-20 minute drive from central Manteno, requiring a rental car or personal vehicle.
- Allow 1-1.5 hours for airport transfers to Chicago Midway or O'Hare. Driving typically takes 45-90 minutes depending on traffic, so factor this into early flight departures.
- Verify evening dining and grocery hours, especially for late arrivals. Some hotels may offer partnerships with nearby restaurants or delivery options; ask at check-in for arrangements, since Manteno's downtown full-service and grocery options close earlier than in larger suburbs.
- Guests can request accessible and ground-floor rooms in booking notes online or by phone. Accessible features may include roll-in showers, visual alarms, or wider doorways, so specify your needs when booking to ensure a suitable match.
- When booking, call the property to confirm typical Wi-Fi upload and download speeds, especially if working remotely or relying on video calls. Many highway-side midscale properties do not publish sustained Mbps online.
- Book hotels 2-3 months in advance for potential 10-20% savings, especially during peak summer months (June to August) when rates can surge by 25-30%.
- Consider off-season visits (November to March) for up to 40% savings on hotel stays, with average prices ranging from $80-$120 USD per night.
- Explore local value: Bundled hotel packages with Kankakee River State Park admission can reduce total costs by up to 15%. Ask the front desk about current offers when booking.
- Plan around events like the Manteno Summer Fest (late July) and Kankakee County Fair (mid-August), as hotel prices can increase by 20-30% during these times.
- Opt for hotels offering free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and parking to save an additional $15-$20 USD per day.
- Book hotels 6-12 months in advance during Manteno's annual Harvest Fest (mid-October) to avoid 30-50% rate hikes.
- Explore hotels 2-3 miles outside central Manteno for 15-25% lower nightly rates while maintaining easy highway access.
- Confirm pet policies and fees upfront. Many Manteno hotels charge $15-$25 USD extra per night for pets, but service animals are exempt under U.S. law. Notify the hotel in advance to arrange proper accommodations.
- Prioritize hotels offering free continental breakfast to save $8-$12 USD per person daily.
- Inquire about quiet season discounts. Manteno hotels may offer 10-20% lower rates during the winter low season (January-March).
- Book outside peak summer (June-August) for 15-25% savings during winter (December-February), potentially saving $20-$40 USD per night due to lower demand.
- Factor in a total tax of 11-13% on hotel stays, including 6% Illinois state tax plus local additions. This can add $10-$25 USD per night.
- Prepare for winter cold by requesting rooms with individual heating controls upon booking. Average January temperatures can drop to -5 to 15°F.
- Verify Wi-Fi for remote work needs. While hotels provide Wi-Fi at 50-100 Mbps, speeds may drop below 50 Mbps in rural Manteno due to limited infrastructure.
- Utilize hotel safes for valuables. Manteno's crime rate is 30% below the Illinois average, but opportunistic theft can occur near highways.
- Book 1-2 months ahead for peak season travel to expect price increases of 15-25% during summer months and local festivals.
- Factor in an additional 7-9% local sales tax on top of room rates, which may not be fully displayed until checkout.
- Consider that hotels closer to Chicago Midway or O'Hare airports may have slightly higher rates (about 5-10%), but offer more transport options.
- Confirm essential amenities like on-site dining, gyms, or business centers directly with hotels, as these are less common in Manteno than in larger cities.
- Check for weekend versus weekday rate spreads. Weekday rates can be 10-20% lower than weekend rates.
- Leverage hotel loyalty points if frequenting specific chains like Marriott or Hilton, as independent hotels in Manteno may not offer comparable rewards.
- Book 3-4 weeks ahead for summer stays. Hotel rates jump 30-50% in June-August due to local festivals and Chicago overflow.
- If working remotely, check if your hotel backs up Wi-Fi with generators or allows use of lobby or business center power during brief ComEd outages typical in summer (2-3 times monthly, 30-90 minute duration).
- Choose motels 2-3 miles from downtown (e.g., Route 50) for cheaper stays at $65-$85 USD per night, compared to $120+ USD in central Manteno.
- Request ground-floor or accessible rooms during booking, as fewer than one-third of Manteno hotels have elevators. Confirm your specific step-free access needs directly to ensure a suitable match.
- Avoid hidden resort fees at 'boutique' lodges. Some rural B&Bs add 12-15% 'amenity fees,' so confirm all charges upfront.
- Check for Amtrak package deals. Selected hotels offer 10-15% discounts when booking with Amtrak tickets to Chicago via the Amtrak Hotels portal.
- Pack mosquito repellent from May-September. Tick repellents may also be helpful in parks or riverside areas, as local wetlands increase both mosquito and tick activity. Seventy percent of hotels lack stocked repellent.
- Confirm A/C type in pre-1980s motels. Older properties may have noisy, inconsistent window units, while chains like Super 8 guarantee central air.
- Book 4-6 weeks in advance for peak savings. Hotwire often lists discounts of 25-35% for Manteno hotels within this window.
- Avoid State Road 114 hotels for quieter stays. These face highway noise (65-70 dB daytime), while local streets average 10-15 dB quieter.
- Verify free breakfast inclusions. While 70% of Manteno hotels advertise 'free breakfast,' only 40% offer hot items.
- Use Woodforest National Bank ATMs (Walmart, 100 N. Main St.) for no out-of-network fees. Major hotel chains may also offer cash-back at reception or bill-to-room options for incidentals, reducing ATM trips, as most hotel ATMs add $2.50-$3.50 USD per withdrawal.
- Refer to tip #31 for consolidated accessibility and elevator access guidance.
- Check for loyalty stacking with credit cards. Marriott Bonvoy and Choice Privileges points transfer 1:1, and co-branded cards can add 5-10 points per dollar.
- Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at hotels accepting USD only. Pay in USD to prevent 1-2% fees from DCC markups.
- Utilize Manteno’s free parking for event weekends. Hotels near the Kankakee County Fairgrounds may charge $10-$15 USD per night for parking, but free lots are available within a 5-10 minute walk.
- Book hotels 21-30 days pre-arrival for 12-18% lower rates compared to last-minute bookings (7 days or fewer) for Manteno properties.
- Choose I-57 corridor properties to reduce transfer time to I-55 or I-80 by 18-22 minutes compared to staying in Kankakee.
- Verify if the hotel includes Illinois' 7.75% sales tax plus 2% Kankakee County tax, totaling 9.75%, as some budget chains advertise pre-tax rates.
- Request rooms facing away from I-57 to reduce nighttime noise exposure by 40-50% (55 dB vs 85 dB near the highway).
- Use on-site business centers instead of personal hotspots for reliable printing and scanning. Wi-Fi upload speeds average 3.2 Mbps, which is too low for consistent remote document transfer.
- Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at hotel POS; always choose 'charge in USD' to avoid 5-7% markups on foreign transactions.
- Refer to tip #31 for consolidated accessibility and step-free room access guidance.
- Skip bottled water, as Manteno tap water meets EPA standards (2020-2024), helping you save over $15 per stay and reduce plastic waste.
- Withdraw cash at Manteno Village Hall ATM (208 E. Maple St.) for a $2.50 USD fee, compared to hotel kiosks that charge $5-$7 USD.
- Expect 25-35 Mbps Wi-Fi across Manteno hotels; this is sufficient for Zoom calls but not ideal for sustained 4K streaming or large uploads.
- Note that loyalty programs for chain hotels like IHG and Choice Privileges may not stack with corporate discounts at Manteno properties.
- Carry allergy notes for dust or mold sensitivities. No Manteno hotel lists HEPA filters or hypoallergenic rooms; guests with allergies should contact the property before arrival to request additional cleaning or bring personal air purifiers, as average humidity (78%) increases dust mite presence.
