Howzit Hostels Hawaii

The hostel had character because it's been there since early 1900s but the amenities were perfect for staying a couple of days. Perfect location too!

The property could use some modern touches and updating but it offered more comfort than other hostels I've visited aboard.

This property was clean and well situated in Hilo. It’s close to the bus station, free parking, markets, Hilo night life, and the ocean. The facilities were clean and well stocked. I loved having clean towels, breakfast, and coffee without extra charge. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

Loved the activities everyday. Free pancakes! Excellent "staff", shout out to Hira, Emily,... Really nice bathrooms. Free coffee and tea. Just the nicest, most diverse group. Loved it will be back!

Place holds up to 50 yet barely any silverware or places to sit. Cleaned during busy times instead of at night and wasted paper towels. Don't need to dry the sink! Try something other than paper towels to dry hands!

As a person who explores the city and loves going to the gym, I love that this place us near by places I want to be from the gym, bar, library, grocery store, etc.

The hostel is situated downtown Hilo. It was well-maintained and there was a great atmosphere! The staff were super helpful and welcoming. I loved the idea that there were sign up events available for the guests like trips to the waterfalls or a jazz night. In the morning there are free pancakes and a coffee. Loved the place!

All was good. It was pretty warm during the night time, but there were ventilators in the rooms.

I enjoyed this welcoming hostel in Hilo. It is in a great location downtown, and it is a great place to meet people on your travels. There was a variety of trips to join during the day which really helped if you did not have a car. Sarah was a great a "tour guide" and I felt safe with her driving the van. Mary, Sophia and Krystal were very kind and helpful at the hostel. The beds were comfortable and I enjoyed the curtain which provided additional privacy. The bathrooms, especially the showers were clean, and the hot water was plentiful. The kitchen was a good place to cook food, and there was a small seating area outside to enjoy (although the many motorcycles and blaring music from the cars was a little abrasive (not the hostel's fault)).

Sometimes it felt a little that I was hanging out at a sorority with the volunteers laying around and taking up all the comfortable spaces in the common area to hang out in the evenings. I really wish they offered a recycling bin for the cans and bottles, especially since Hawaii has a 5 cent deposit on them. If nothing else, it could be given to help the many homeless people in Hilo instead of being thrown away.

The kitchen had so many cockroaches it was a bit of a nightmare. They looked at you from the shelf, inside the cutlery drawer... Very hygienic. The fridge had plenty of expired food too, so not even the fridge felt safe in that kitchen. The windows in the room are old and sometimes don't stay open. They leave gaps when "closed" too, so prepare to welcome a few mosquitoes into your room. There is also a big gap underneath the door, so plenty of light comes in.

I haven't stayed in a hostel for years. This place exceeded my (admittedly very low) expectations about hostels. The toilet was well maintained and nice-smelling. The individual beds were simple, but surprisingly comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised that breakfast was provided, and that there was a nice central space to eat, read, and hang out at. There is also a WhatsApp group that organizes events and trips around the island, which would have been great if you have more time here in Hilo. The hostel is also within walking distance of the beachfront - which means you can actually pop out to see the sunrise; it's also within easy walking distance of many grocery stores and eating places, which I really appreciated. Location was great, especially if you don't drive!

Very good common areas, soft sofas, kitchen, clean and luxury restrooms. Good bunk beds with private lights, good space for suitcase and bagpacks to be locked in. I could choose upper or lower bed.

A pool table could really be a good thing to have.
