Top Tips
- Book falls-view rooms early, especially for summer, long weekends, and during the Winter Festival of Lights, as these rooms command a premium. Major chains like Hyatt, Marriott, and Hilton label high-floor 'Fallsview' rooms, usually facing the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Call the hotel to confirm if the view is guaranteed, which floor you’ll be on, and orientation, since guarantees vary by brand.
- Compare the cost and convenience of hotels downtown near Niagara Falls State Park versus Buffalo or Lewiston. Downtown/Fallsview hotels put you within walking distance (under 0.5 mi) of Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, and the Observation Tower. Buffalo is 25 mi (40 km) away, usually 35-45 minutes by car, and Lewiston is 8 mi (13 km). Out-of-town hotels are often less expensive but require a car or shuttle. If not downtown, look for hotels offering shuttle service.
- Check hotel parking policies before you book. Many properties charge daily fees for self-park or valet, and street parking is limited. Choose a hotel with on-site parking included, or confirm current rates, which can range from $15 to $25 USD per day.
- Before visiting the Canadian side, check up-to-date cross-border travel requirements. Adults need a valid passport (or NEXUS/E-NTRY as applicable) to cross the Rainbow Bridge. U.S. residents under 16 may use a birth certificate. Allow extra time for border waits and check the official site for current hours and any COVID-19 restrictions. Non-U.S. guests should verify visa or entry rules in advance.
- Bring layers and waterproof gear; falls spray can soak clothing quickly. Consider properties with in-room heated drying racks (available at some major chains) or use onsite laundry and dryers for fast drying after tours. Ask about additional towels and in-room hanging options, or check with housekeeping.
- Be prepared to show a photo ID and credit card at check-in. U.S. hotels usually place a hold at arrival. Resort or processing fees might not be included in quoted nightly rates and can add 10-15% to your total. Confirm the full price (room, taxes, and all fees) before you book.
- Review recent guest feedback for noise, maintenance, or safety on multiple platforms (Google, TripAdvisor, Priceline). Reviews often mention issues like mold, construction, or noise. If you have allergies, call the hotel to verify air purification or hypoallergenic room options, and confirm any modernizations if reviews mention older rooms.
- Tipping for hotel staff is customary in the U.S. Plan for bellhops at $1 to $2 USD per bag, valet at $3 to $5 USD, and housekeeping at $2 to $5 USD each day, leaving cash daily as staff rotate. Note that U.S. tipping expectations may differ from Canadian standards.
- Check for shuttle, taxi, or rideshare options before booking. Many hotels offer shuttle service to the falls or Buffalo airport, often every 30-60 minutes. Rideshare apps operate in the area but can be limited at off-hours. Confirm shuttle schedules with the hotel for early tours or late returns.
- For families, verify hotel amenities such as cribs, connecting rooms, kid menus, and laundry. Several hotels, like Embassy Suites and Sheraton, offer indoor pools and children’s entertainment rooms. Look for properties with 'family amenities' and check for early breakfast hours or proximity to kid-friendly attractions like the Aquarium of Niagara.
- Solo travelers should select a hotel close to Niagara Falls State Park or in a busy, well-lit area. Request a higher-floor room and use hotel safes for valuables. For added safety, choose properties with 24-hour staffed lobbies and video surveillance, common at large chains. Let someone know your plans if out late.
- Business travelers should verify Wi-Fi speed, an in-room workspace, and business center access. Most national-brand hotels provide early hot breakfast from 6:00 am and secure Wi-Fi. Request a quiet floor or a room away from elevators to support work and rest.
- Review pet and smoking policies before you book. Most hotels are non-smoking and charge cleaning fines. Pet policies often limit dogs to under 50 lbs, with fees of $50 to $100 per stay at major chains. Service animals are always allowed by law. Confirm details if you have a pet or a strong preference.
- Prepare for seasonal weather. Winter is cold and icy near observation points, so use hotel-provided salt and boot trays; pack extra warm layers. In summer, expect large crowds and humidity; bring sunscreen and insect repellent or buy them at local grocery stores or pharmacies if not available at the front desk.
- Look for bundled attraction packages through your hotel for sites like Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, or Niagara Aquarium. Some packages save $5 to $10 per ticket compared to direct purchase. Compare rates and book in advance for peak weekends.
- Never leave luggage or electronics visible in your parked car. Use in-room or front-desk safes for valuables. For added security during busy festival periods, use hotel valet parking options when available and park in lots managed by your hotel.
- Check the hotel’s website or FAQ before traveling for the latest COVID-19 or health policies. Requirements can change quickly and may include mask or vaccine policies for certain services. Compliance is mandatory for all guests if reinstated.
- Ask about seasonal extras and special experiences. Many hotels offer falls-view dining, balconies with fireworks or illumination views (fireworks most Fridays and Sundays, May-October), or spa packages. Ask the front desk for the current schedule or to book these packages.
- For accessibility, request an ADA-compliant room and confirm step-free access, roll-in showers, grab bars, and elevators. Accessibility features vary by property, and newer major chain hotels are more likely to meet ADA standards. Always call to verify availability before booking.
- A quick call to your hotel can confirm early check-in, free luggage storage, parking rates, or event schedules like fireworks. For busy weekends, call at least 48 hours before arrival to review and secure special requests.
