Beautiful view; very nice location, classy looks,
The location of this hotel was one of the best things of the Blue Waters hot. It is across the street from the water and close to shopping in the area. The breakfast buffet was very nice and had many options.

We were well treated by the staff. The Front Desk Manager worked hard to change one of our rooms to a twin bed set up rather than the 1 bed configuration it was. The entire time we stayed at the Balmoral, the staff was nice, polite and helpful.

Top Tips
- Book hotels in Durban 6-12 weeks before the December-New Year high season to secure a better selection. Expect nightly rates to be 30-100% higher than low season, and prioritize refundable or flexible bookings for maximum peace of mind.
- Confirm that your hotel offers full generator coverage for guest rooms and reception before booking, as power cuts lasting 2-6 hours occur regularly in Durban. Ask if essential services such as Wi-Fi and elevators remain powered during outages.
- Select Umhlanga hotels (Lighthouse or Umhlanga Ridge districts) for faster airport access, about 20-25 km (20-30 minutes) from King Shaka International Airport compared to 28-40 km (30-50 minutes) to central Durban. Many hotels in Umhlanga also offer secure onsite parking and modern dining options.
- Avoid walking alone in Durban CBD after dark. Use hotel-arranged transport or ride-hail services like Bolt or Uber, as street-level thefts are more frequent at night, and verify with your hotel if a secure shuttle is available for guests.
- Tip 10-15% in Durban restaurants unless a service fee is listed, as higher-end hotels may include this in the bill. For hotel porters and housekeeping, R20-R50 (about $1-$3 USD) per bag or extra service is customary.
- Pay in South African Rand (ZAR) and always decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), as local ATMs charge operator fees of R10-R30 (about $0.50-$1.50 USD). Some top hotels may offer cash withdrawal at reception for major credit cards; ask in advance.
- Choose hotels advertising secure, guarded parking with perimeter fencing and CCTV when renting a car in Durban, as vehicle break-ins can occur. These features offer added peace of mind, especially for families or solo guests.
- Swim only between lifeguard flags on Durban’s Golden Mile beaches, patrolled daily during peak season (November-March), with shark nets in many areas. Check if accessible beach mats or lifeguard assistance are available at your chosen spot.
- Confirm with your hotel if tap water is safe to drink, as some properties use boreholes or extra filtration beyond city treatment. Bottled water is available at most hotel shops and restaurants if in doubt.
- Use hotel loyalty programs linked to international networks, such as Protea to Marriott Bonvoy, for potential perks like complimentary room upgrades, breakfast, or Wi-Fi. Benefits vary by property and membership level, so verify your eligibility before arrival.
