Where to stay in Halifax
Learn about the top neighbourhoods of Halifax
Nova Scotia's capital is a beautiful harbor town with exciting things to do and see. The city's most notable landmark, the Halifax Citadel, is an old fort sitting atop a hill overlooking the city and the Halifax Harbour. Take a stroll along the boardwalk; along the way you can peek into beautiful historic buildings, shops and restaurants. Harbour boat tours launch from the boardwalk area. Tour Alexander Keith's Brewery to hear a whimsical story mixed with interesting history, or you can learn about the great waters of the Atlantic at the Maritime Museum. The nights are alive in this friendly city; nightlife is at its peak on Granville Street.
This suburban stretch about 25 minutes outside of Halifax features a nice mix of natural areas and shopping, dining and business. You'll find Bayers Lake here, a premier retail, dining, business and entertainment destination; there are also such green spaces as Hemlock Ravine, a great urban park with pleasant trails. Mt. St. Vincent University and the sprawling Long Lake Provincial Park are a short drive away.

Top Tips
- Book 3-6 months ahead for summer stays (June-August) in Halifax to avoid a 20-35% rate increase during cruise ship arrivals or local festivals. Early planning secures more options near the waterfront and downtown. Set fare alerts for your target dates to monitor price changes.
- Expect 17% total tax on Halifax hotel bills: Nova Scotia’s 15% HST plus up to a 2% municipal tourism levy. Confirm total tax charges in your booking summary before payment.
- Downtown hotels situate you within 500-800 m of the waterfront and business district. The South End offers a quieter setting with boutiques and cafes, and gives you easy access to the Public Gardens (10-15 minute walk to downtown core). Select based on preferred atmosphere and walking distance.
- Wi-Fi speeds in well-rated Halifax hotels typically range from 50-150 Mbps, suitable for most remote work needs. Some boutique or premium properties may charge a daily Wi-Fi fee of $15-25 CAD; check with your hotel before arrival for details.
- Bring Canadian Dollars (CAD) for independent shops or markets, as credit cards are widely accepted at tourist venues but cash is preferred in small businesses. ATMs are widely available across Halifax, but foreign cards may incur $3-5 CAD withdrawal fees.
- Choose to pay in Canadian Dollars (CAD) when using a foreign card to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fees and less favorable exchange rates. At card readers, select 'CAD' to minimize extra costs.
- Verify step-free access directly with your hotel if you require mobility accommodations, as many heritage properties have limited accessibility. Newer hotels and major chains generally provide elevators and accessible rooms. Request accessible features such as ramp access or visual alarms if needed.
- Halifax tap water is treated and safe to drink. Carrying a reusable water bottle can help you save over $2 CAD per bottled water and reduce plastic waste. Fill up at hotel stations or public fountains found throughout downtown.
- Major hotel chains in Halifax, such as Marriott, Hilton, and IHG, run loyalty programs that can earn you free nights or upgrades after multiple stays. Using co-branded cards accelerates points earnings; enroll and track benefits via each hotel’s app.
- Off-season visits (October-April) deliver hotel savings of 30-50% versus peak periods, but mean colder weather and limited outdoor attractions. Check seasonal hours at key sites before booking to maximize your experience.
