The beach, the cleanliness and the attention to detail. Example the coconuts were cold, fresh and had the Mora logo etched (the details).

The staff is very friendly
The bathroom was perfect and is really important to us. There was a communication error on the number of beds advertised for the room and the staff quickly and pleasantly brought in an additional bed to our room. Terrific breakfast with lots of options.

Top Tips
- Book beachfront hotels in Nungwi 3-4 months ahead during peak season (June-October); rates can rise 40-70% compared to low season, and availability drops significantly within 6 weeks of arrival. If seeking unique experiences, check whether your chosen hotel offers guided sunrise tours, as several properties in this zone host these in peak months.
- Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) on card payments at Stone Town hotels; choosing the local currency (TZS) at the point of sale avoids 3-5% hidden fees, saving approximately $15 to $40 USD per $1,000 spent. Ask front-desk staff if they accept TZS directly for additional services, which may further reduce costs or provide perks such as complimentary bottled water.
- Select properties with Zanzibar Chamber of Commerce sustainability certification; certified hotels audit 25% better on water recycling and waste compared to non-certified options. Explore on-site eco-initiatives like reusable water bottle stations or local craft workshops to connect with Zanzibar's responsible tourism practices.
- Confirm 24/7 generator backup when booking for Mnemba or Paje, as rural east-coast zones experience grid power failures 2-4 times weekly, while generator-backed properties maintain 98% uptime for AC and Wi-Fi. For remote work or uninterrupted rest, inquire if the hotel provides real-time power status updates or maintains backup charging stations for guest use.
- Stay north of Forodhani Gardens in Stone Town for lower mosquito density; malaria incidence drops 35% northward due to elevation and breeze. Most hotels in this area provide mosquito nets and repellents upon request, so arrange these before arrival for extra comfort.
- Use ATMs inside Forodhani Post Office or ZCB Bank for lower fees; third-party ATMs charge $3-$5 USD plus 2%, while ZCB charges a flat $2 USD. Major hotels may assist with currency exchange or direct guests to nearby bank-affiliated ATMs for convenience and added security.
- Pre-book airport transfers from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) via a hotel shuttle; official shuttle rates are fixed at $25 USD one-way to Stone Town (45 minutes), while unauthorized taxis charge $35-$50 USD. Many hotel shuttles offer welcome amenities or bottled water upon request; check details in advance to enhance your arrival.
- Prioritize hotels with fiber-connected Wi-Fi for remote work; only 12% of Zanzibar hotels advertise fiber, with verified connections averaging 18-22 Mbps download speeds. Some hotels provide business centers or loaner devices upon request—confirm available amenities to support your work needs.
- Request step-free access explicitly, as only 19% of Stone Town riads are fully accessible and most historic stone buildings lack elevators. If you require visual alarms or designated accessible rooms, inform the property during booking for best support—hotel teams are generally eager to accommodate.
- Avoid all-inclusive plans at south-coast resorts unless verified for local sourcing; non-local food import raises meal costs by 30% and can affect freshness. Discover local cuisine through à la carte restaurant menus or special chef’s dinners often held at larger south-coast hotels.
- Tip housekeeping 2,000 TZS (approximately $0.85 USD) daily, separate from restaurant staff; daily cash in an envelope prevents disputes and improves room preparation priority. Many hotels provide pre-marked envelopes in-room for guest use—ask at reception if not visible.
- Choose accommodations with rooftop terraces in Stone Town during Ramadan; rooftop breakfasts help avoid street-level noise from pre-dawn meals and reduce ambient heat by 3-5°C. Some hotels offer exclusive sunrise or early breakfast experiences on rooftops, so reserve these in advance as demand rises during peak holiday periods.
