Top Tips
- Decline dynamic currency conversion (DCC) at hotel payment terminals and choose to pay in Mexican Pesos (MXN) to avoid typical 1-5% markups. After selecting MXN, verify the total matches the direct hotel rate. Major chains in Mexico City usually display both options at checkout.
- Carry small bills (20-200 MXN) for gratuities; standard tips are 20-50 MXN per day for housekeeping and 20-50 MXN per bag for bellhops. If you need change, inquire at the hotel front desk, as many large hotels can assist.
- Use official taxi booths inside Benito Juárez Airport or ride-hailing apps like Uber and Cabify for direct transfers to central neighborhoods; expect fares in the 200-400 MXN range (approx. $12-$24 USD). Follow signage to authorized taxi kiosks for safety.
- Book at least 6 weeks ahead of Día de Muertos (Nov 1-2) and peak December dates, as Mexico City's hotel occupancy rises sharply and last-minute availability is limited.
- If you are sensitive to nighttime noise, request an interior or courtyard-facing room when booking in Roma, Condesa, or Centro Histórico to minimize sound from nearby bars and events. Confirm room location preference with your hotel.
- Hotels in Centro Histórico, Coyoacán, Roma, and Condesa frequently have narrow staircases and compact elevators. If you have large luggage or mobility needs, confirm elevator dimensions or reserve an accessible or ground-floor room in advance.
- Do not drink tap water. Confirm that your hotel supplies complimentary bottled or filtered water, and check if in-room kettles are available. Most international brands in Mexico City provide these for guest comfort.
- During the dry season (February-May), ask your hotel about water storage and laundry service frequency, as many rely on onsite cisterns or scheduled deliveries. Laundry availability or timing may be limited during municipal shortages.
- Prefer ATMs inside bank branches such as BBVA, Santander, or Banorte, and shield your PIN to avoid skimming or extra surcharges. Some upscale hotels offer limited cash withdrawal at reception; ask about this service at check-in.
- Expect a 16% VAT on hotel stays in Mexico City, with some properties adding a 10-15% service charge. Review your final invoice for all taxes and municipal lodging fees before making payment.
