This hotel was everything they claimed to be! Newer looking, clean, staff were super helpful and kind. The only thing I would think twice about going back is the amount of wild children running around unattended in the halls past midnight.

Where to stay in Edmonton
Learn about the top neighbourhoods of Edmonton
West Edmonton Mall is the star of the show in this area set about 20 minutes outside of downtown Edmonton. This 5.3-million-square-foot mall is home to more than 800 stores and services, including more than 100 dining venues and nine world-class attractions. In fact, the mall is home to the world's largest indoor amusement park, the world's largest indoor wave pool, an underground aquarium, an NHL-sized ice rink and much more - all together attracting an average of nearly 31 million people annually, making West Edmonton Mall the province's number one tourist attraction.
Located north of the Saskatchewan River and running east past Highway 16, this stretch of central Edmonton is home to many of the area's main attractions. Here you'll find Rexall Place and Commonwealth Stadium, as well as a wealth of shops and restaurants. A number of parks line the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River, making it easy to get back to nature. Plus, the University of Alberta campus is located just across the river.
Retail (and food and entertainment) enthusiasts flock to this area south of downtown Edmonton for its fantastic shopping at Southgate Centre and South Edmonton Common (one of the largest open-air retail developments in North America). This conveniently placed area puts visitors within a 20-minute drive of downtown Edmonton, as well as Edmonton International Airport, making it a cinch to experience all the Edmonton region has to offer.

Top Tips
- Select hotels offering complimentary shuttles to Edmonton International Airport (YEG), located 26 km south of downtown, a typical 25-35 minute drive. Using a hotel shuttle can save CA$60-80 (approx. US$44-59) one way compared to a taxi or rideshare. Confirm shuttle operating hours with your hotel, especially for early or late arrivals.
- Book hotels within 400-800 m of Rogers Place at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance during Edmonton Oilers games (October to April) or major concerts. Rates and foot traffic typically rise on event nights, so early booking secures better room selection.
- Reserve accommodation 6 to 10 weeks ahead during top summer festivals such as K-Days (late July), Folk Music Festival (early August), or Fringe Theatre Festival (mid-August), and University of Alberta convocation in June. These periods see a spike in demand and higher rates citywide.
- Expect to pay CA$20-40 (approx. US$15-30) per night for on-site parking in downtown hotels. Factor this into your total costs or consider properties outside the core that offer complimentary parking. Some hotels may provide charging points for electric vehicles, so verify this amenity if needed.
- Edmonton tap water meets provincial quality standards and is safe to drink. Bring or request a reusable bottle; many hotels and venues have water refill stations, helping you avoid bottled water purchases during your stay.
- During January, pack insulating layers and plan for average lows of -15°C to -20°C. Hotel rooms use central heating, leading to low humidity; bringing a small moisturizer or requesting a room humidifier can help prevent dry skin and nasal discomfort.
- Although cannabis use is legal in Alberta, most hotels prohibit smoking and vaping (including cannabis) indoors. Common penalties include cleaning fees or eviction. Check the hotel’s policy before booking or ask if they offer a designated outdoor area.
- When paying by card, select Canadian dollars (CAD) instead of US dollars if prompted. This avoids dynamic currency conversion fees, which can add 1-3% per transaction on top of your booking costs.
- For step-free access, request an accessible or ground-floor room when booking at older downtown hotels. Many buildings have limited roll-in rooms. Confirm details with the hotel to guarantee your needs are met, especially for mobility aids or visual alarms.
- Explore Edmonton hotels’ amenities. Many offer heated indoor pools, sauna access, or 24-hour fitness centers, which are ideal during the cold season. Ask staff about on-site dining that features regional Alberta cuisine.
