This is a charming 1950's motor motel!! The room was decorated beautifully with a wonderful view of the river!! The motel uses an actual key reminiscent of 1950's / 1960's motor motels!! The owner was extremely accommodating, will gladly stay there again!

Top Tips
- Book your Charleston hotel 4-8 weeks ahead if visiting during the West Virginia legislative session (January-March), as hotels near the Capitol often sell out and rates can rise by 15-25%. Early booking secures availability and baseline pricing.
- Expect a 20-30 minute drive (12 miles) from Yeager Airport (CRW) to downtown Charleston. Taxis or ride-hail services cost $25-$40 each way. Check if your hotel offers a shuttle or arrange ground transport before arrival for smoother transfers.
- Central downtown hotels place you within a 10-20 minute walk of the Clay Center, State Capitol, and Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center, ideal for business and event travelers.
- Parking at downtown hotels often ranges from $8-$25 per night for self-parking or valet. Verify parking fees during booking to compare total costs across properties.
- For late-night returns, use ride-hail or taxi, as Kanawha Valley bus service offers limited evening service and no late-night coverage. Confirm ride options for arrivals after 10 pm.
- Older Charleston inns and B&Bs may lack step-free access or roll-in showers. Request accessibility features such as elevator, visual alarms, or ramp access directly with the property if needed.
- Charleston’s municipal tap water is treated and safe to drink. Most hotels provide refill stations or in-room pitchers, reducing the need for bottled water.
- East End neighborhood hotels often cost 10-20% less than downtown and offer easier street parking. This location is a 10-15 minute walk from the city center’s main attractions.
- Book at least 6 months in advance for large events like the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta in July, as hotel rates typically increase 20-30% and rooms sell out quickly.
- Charleston Civic Center’s parking garage offers free parking and is within a 5-minute walk of many downtown hotels. Using it can help you avoid daily hotel parking charges of $10-$20.
- If you need high-speed internet, most hotels offer 25-50 Mbps Wi-Fi included, with some offering upgrades to 100 Mbps for an added fee. Confirm speeds with the front desk before booking if remote work is essential.
- Factor in 5-7% West Virginia hotel occupancy tax, plus 6% state sales tax, adding $10-$15 per night to a $100 room. Review your bill for tax breakdowns at check-in.
- Downtown neighborhoods near the State Capitol report crime rates 20-30% below national averages. Prioritize these areas for a lower risk of car break-ins.
- Power outages during winter storms can last 2-4 hours. Pack a portable charger, and in summer, request rooms with AC to stay comfortable in 80-90°F humidity.
- For stays from May to October, booking 2-4 weeks ahead typically saves you 15-25% versus last-minute rates. Compare flexible and prepaid pricing options.
- Many mid-range hotels include breakfast, saving $15-$25 per person per day versus eating out. Check your reservation details to confirm breakfast inclusion.
- Bring a reusable bottle and refill using Charleston’s potable tap water. This reduces plastic waste and helps you avoid extra costs during your stay.
- FestivALL (late June) brings 20-30% hotel rate increases and reduced availability. Book 2-3 months in advance for best choice and rates.
- During events like the WV Dance Festival (October) and Sternwheel Regatta (September), riverfront hotels often sell out 2-3 months early and rates rise 30-50%. Secure your booking well in advance.
- Use the Slack Plaza garage two blocks from Capitol St. for parking—$5 on weekends, $8 on weekdays (cash only). This can save $10-$20 per night versus hotel garages.
- River-facing rooms offer views of Kanawha River’s sternwheel activity and sunsets, while 'city view' often faces parking lots. Confirm room orientation during booking if views matter to you.
- For remote work, Marriott Town Center and Holiday Inn Express & Suites guarantee 25+ Mbps Wi-Fi speeds, while other downtown hotels average 12-25 Mbps. Verify current speeds if you need strong connectivity.
- If staying near Capitol Market, skip in-hotel breakfast and walk 5 minutes to local delis and cafés for better quality for $8-$12.
- State employees and contractors can book flat $99-$119 rates at select hotels like Four Points by Sheraton by using the WV state portal or showing government ID at check-in.
- Historic hotels like Brass Pineapple Inn may have lower soundproofing than modern buildings. Ask about room location relative to elevators and stairs when booking for a quiet stay.
- Check for hidden resort or amenity fees at booking, which can add $10-$25 per night and may not be listed in initial quotes.
- In the eastern suburbs near New River Gorge, request a mountain-view room, as these are popular and usually require a specific advance request.
- Most Charleston hotels allow pets but often have breed restrictions or fees of $20-$50 per night. Verify the hotel’s pet policy before booking.
- During graduation or sports events at WV State University (Institute, 15 minutes south), nearby hotels fill quickly. Book in advance or check for last-minute cancellations.
- Ask hotels about local attraction discounts, as some offer special rates for visitors to places like New River Gorge Bridge Walk.
- For FestivALL, book downtown hotels 6-8 weeks ahead to secure baseline pricing. Demand often increases rates by 30-50% as the event nears.
- Hotels on Kanawha Boulevard offer walkable access to the State Capitol and cultural sites, cutting 15-20 minutes off transit time compared to suburban options.
- When paying with a foreign card at hotel front desks, select 'pay in USD' to avoid dynamic currency conversion markups, which average 3-5% above standard exchange rates.
- Rooms adjacent to I-64 face nighttime noise spikes of 60-65 dB. Request a rear-facing room to enjoy quieter stays at 45-50 dB.
- Ensure hotel legitimacy by confirming listings use 304 area code phone numbers and display a local physical address.
- Hotels with ENERGY STAR or EPA GreenChill certifications such as Charleston Marriott at Town Center use 18-22% less energy. Choose these for environmental benefits.
- To avoid $3.00-$3.50 out-of-network ATM fees, withdraw cash at banks near downtown like City National Bank or First Financial Service Corp.
- Step-free access is inconsistent; only 60-70% of hotels with 'accessible' online tags confirm roll-in showers and zero-entry lobbies. Call hotels directly to verify needed features.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 per night, left daily in your room, as this is standard practice and supports consistent room service.
- Kanawha County Fair (late July-early August) drives up rates by 35-45% at hotels near Nitro and Cross Lanes. Expect check-in delays of 18-22 minutes due to heavy fair traffic.
- In July-August, hotels with main-level water refill stations help you stay hydrated and reduce costs, as daily water needs increase by 25-30% in summer heat.
