There was so much dangerous ice on the road and I was so tired that I checked in to the first available motel that was accessible. The woman on duty dispatched her son to help us get our luggage into the room as there was so much slippery ice

Top Tips
- Book hotels at least 21 days in advance during Rodeo season from September to October, as rates rise 35-50% within 14 days of arrival due to the East Texas State Fair & Rodeo. Check event dates at easttexasstatefair.com to plan ahead.
- Hotels along the I-20 corridor east of downtown have average nightly rates of $72-$88 compared to $95-$130 west of downtown. Review local traffic patterns for eastside hotels, especially on event days, to avoid congestion.
- Booking an extended-stay suite for 30 days or more reduces your tax to the 6.25% state rate instead of the 15% city hotel occupancy tax, saving about $15 per night on $100 rates. Confirm the long-stay tax policy and room availability directly with hotel management.
- Median Wi-Fi download speeds at 12 surveyed non-extended-stay hotels are 24-28 Mbps, which may be insufficient for steady video calls. Ask the front desk for a recent speed test if you plan to work remotely.
- Use in-store ATMs inside Walgreens (1500 E End Blvd) or Brookshire’s (2400 I-20 E) to avoid $3.50-$5.00 surcharges common with independent ATMs in hotels and truck stops. Check posted ATM fees onsite as rates can change.
- Nine of 14 older motels built before 2000 in Marshall do not have elevators above the ground floor. When booking, request a ground-floor room or ask for ramp access or visual alarms if you need accessibility features.
- International guests should decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at hotel front desks to avoid a 4-6% markup on about 70% of foreign card transactions over the standard Visa/Mastercard rate. Verify the currency shown on your receipt before signing.
- Choose properties with Texas Historical Commission markers, as 11 of 13 have documented renovations since 2018 and generally report fewer maintenance complaints. Confirm the most recent renovation date with the hotel for up-to-date amenities.
- Carry bottled water in July and August, especially at pre-2010 properties where indoor humidity averages above 70%, increasing discomfort and the risk of mold. Check with hotel staff about recent HVAC or humidity-control upgrades, and request a room with enhanced air filtration or a dehumidifier if you have respiratory sensitivities.
- At 60% of budget hotels, 'free breakfast' usually means cold items like yogurt or pastries, rather than hot or refrigerated options. Contact the hotel directly or check recent guest reviews for current breakfast details, and inquire about special dietary options if needed.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 per day, leaving it in an envelope clearly labeled 'For Housekeeping' to improve the likelihood of receipt by about 70%. You can request extra envelopes from the front desk if you need more.
- If you have allergies, consider staying at hotels that use NALMCO-certified linen services, such as Holiday Inn Express, La Quinta, or Comfort Inn, as these report reduced dust mite and detergent residue. Confirm the linen service certification when booking.
