Where to stay in Galveston
Learn about the top neighbourhoods of Galveston
Kids love the Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark, one of the main attractions in this Galveston Island area. Perhaps the area's most eye-catching sight is Moody Gardens, a trio of glassed-in pyramids filled with exhibits that teach young people about the region's flora and fauna. The area is also home to Scholes International Airport, making travel to and from here a breeze.
The iconic Galveston Island historic Pleasure Pier and its family-oriented attractions, rides and games, sits near the eastern end of this central Galveston stretch along Galveston Bay. Seawall Boulevard runs through this area sandwiched between the nearby Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark and Stewart Beach Park, making this area a fantastic launch point for families visiting Galveston.
Facing the Texas Gulf Coast, the eastern portion of Galveston Island sits near the entrance to the wide expanse of Galveston Bay. You're probably here for fun in the sun, and Stewart Beach Park is one of the area's most popular spots. If you're headed out on a cruise ship, the main terminal is nearby. There's no better place for window-shopping than Galveston's Strand Historic District.

Top Tips
- Book beachfront hotels 45-60 days before summer arrival to avoid 30-50% peak-season rate hikes. June to August rates typically rise by early May, so compare both chain and local independent options for these dates for greater availability and better value.
- Hotels near 61st Street and on the west end of Galveston offer 20-30% lower nightly rates than Seawall oceanfront locations, averaging $120-$160 in peak summer. Compare options by location and amenities, as many top chains in these areas provide included Wi-Fi and breakfast.
- Expect mandatory hotel taxes totaling 13.75%—7% city, 4% county, and 2.75% state—added at checkout. Confirm your total price when booking to avoid surprises and check whether tax is included on third-party or direct Chain Member rates.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at hotel desks to avoid 3-5% non-bank markups. For all international cards, select USD for charges, and if unsure, ask staff to confirm the charge currency before authorizing payment.
- Only about 40% of older beachfront hotels offer step-free access or elevators. Call your hotel directly to request specific accommodations—ask about ground-floor rooms, ramp access, and zero-step paths from parking, especially in historic properties.
- Using local ATMs like Moody National Bank saves $15 or more per withdrawal compared to onsite resort machines. For lower fees, walk 5 minutes to a street-situated ATM; many top chains now offer digital payment options, so check for these to reduce cash needs.
- Hotel Wi-Fi in Galveston typically provides 10-15 Mbps upload speeds, but rates can drop to 4-6 Mbps between 7-9 PM due to peak use. For video calls or streaming, schedule uploads outside these hours or check if your property offers premium connections.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 per day, placed discreetly. Industry standard is daily, as resort fees rarely reach staff, and many chains now allow gratuity via the front desk if cashless; confirm your preferred payment method on check-in.
- September brings higher flood risk—60% of hotels south of Broadway lack flood insurance. During hurricane season (June-November), request property insurance details if planning a stay, or call ahead to verify disaster policy preparedness at your chosen hotel.
- In storm season, request an inland-facing room to reduce wind noise by 10-15 dB; oceanfront rooms can register 65-70 dB during tropical or winter storms. If sensitive to noise, ask about soundproofed windows or interior rooms.
- Look for City of Galveston Sustainable Tourism Certification when booking, as these hotels use 25% less potable water thanks to graywater systems. Ask about sustainable amenities such as refill stations and eco-friendly toiletries at top chain properties.
- If your resort fee does not list parking, budget an extra $15-$25 per day for Seawall properties. For example, San Luis Resort charges $29 parking atop a $35 daily resort fee; request an itemized rate breakdown in advance or during booking for full cost clarity.
