Top Tips
- Book hotels 21-30 days before arrival to save 12-18% compared to last-minute bookings. Set a calendar reminder to reserve in this window and note that advance-purchase offers may have limited cancellation flexibility.
- Expect about 10.5% in total lodging taxes in Norfolk, which is higher than in some rural Nebraska counties. Taxes are typically added at checkout and may not appear in the initially quoted nightly rate.
- Request a room facing away from South 13th Street to reduce noise by an estimated 5-8 dB. Make this request during booking or at check-in for the best chance of assignment.
- Use onsite hotel parking since overnight street parking downtown is restricted after 2 AM and may result in towing. Verify if onsite parking fees apply and confirm parking inclusion before arrival.
- Confirm Wi-Fi speed if you will be working remotely, as hotel internet averages 35-50 Mbps and may not support video calls without a hotspot. Request a room closer to the router or signal source for stronger connectivity.
- When paying with a foreign card, select 'charge in USD' to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion fees of 4-7%. Check if your card issuer also charges a separate international transaction fee.
- Norfolk tap water meets federal safety standards, and no advisories have been issued in the past 36 months. Most hotels offer complimentary filtered water in the lobby or fitness center.
- Request step-free access explicitly, as 60% of hotels built before 2005 may not have universal elevator access to guest rooms. Confirm accessible parking and bathroom features if these are required.
- Avoid event weekends, such as Back to School Roundup in August or Jazz in the Alley in July, when room rates can increase 25-40%. Check the city’s event calendar before booking to avoid other high-demand dates.
- Choose properties with ENERGY STAR or EPA recognition; 3 out of 14 Norfolk hotels are certified for energy efficiency. Ask the front desk about onsite sustainability practices, such as linen reuse programs.
- Leave gratuity for housekeeping on extended stays (more than 4 nights) or after special requests. The typical range is $2-5 per day, but tipping is always at the guest’s discretion.
- For fastest fuel and food access, choose hotels within 1 mile of I-80 exit 238 (Drewelowe Road) to reduce off-highway drive time by 6-9 minutes. Local options near this exit include Casey's and McDonald's.
