Exceptional!! Best hotel

Breakfast staff were very polite and helpful. Always cleaning tables and keeping up on food stations. Front desk could learn- they were eating Olive Garden at the desk while checking in- unprofessional in my opinion. Food all over desk.
Nothing really other than a breakfast
Nothing¿ I¿ve never been picky about a hotel before or asked for a room change but this was the first time I made that request. Was told it would get taken care of but they did nothing so we left and paid for 2 more days without a refund. Horrible!

Frequently Asked Questions
Top Tips
- Secure your hotel 2-6 weeks early for University of North Dakota events like football games, hockey playoffs, or commencement. Rates and occupancy often increase by 20-30%, with nearby hotels filling first. Compare location and cancellation policies before booking to maximize flexibility.
- Request hotel shuttle details for airport transfers; Grand Forks International Airport (GFK) sits 3-4 miles (4.8-6.4 km) from downtown, an 8-12 minute drive. Confirm shuttle scheduling in advance to align with your arrival time.
- Book rates with free cancellation or check for snow/cancellation policies from November to March, as temperatures often drop below 0°F (-18°C) and road closures can occur. Verify any weather-related changes 24 hours before arrival.
- For spring stays (March-May), ask about hotel flood procedures and elevation if booking within 2 blocks of the Red River, as seasonal flooding can affect some riverfront areas.
- Hotels along the I-29 / 32nd Ave S corridor typically offer lower nightly rates and free surface parking compared to downtown properties. Select this area for easy access to chain amenities and value parking.
- Expect downtown hotels to charge parking fees ($15-20 per night) or rely on metered street parking, while suburban chain hotels often include parking at no cost. Always confirm parking details during booking.
- Test hotel Wi-Fi speed on arrival, as stable video calls require at least 25 Mbps download. Request wired access or alternative solutions if speeds do not meet your needs for remote work.
- In winter, confirm airport shuttle hours and late check-in policies beforehand, as severe weather may change standard schedules. Call property staff before arrival if landing after 20:00.
- Leverage loyalty perks at major national brands like Hilton or Choice Hotels, which are prevalent in Grand Forks. Members may receive free breakfast or late checkout; ask at check-in.
- Travellers sensitive to dust or fragrances should request daily housekeeping details and hypoallergenic bedding upon booking. Confirm allergy-friendly room options for longer stays.
- Plan for a combined 7-8% sales and occupancy tax on hotel stays; large properties may add $15 per night in resort fees. Review all taxes and surcharges before finalizing payment.
- Downtown or University of North Dakota-adjacent hotels provide walkable access (10-15 minutes) to dining and events. These neighborhoods have low crime rates, under 200 incidents per 10,000 residents.
- For winter stays (November-March), request rooms with heated indoor parking and double-glazed windows to minimize slip risk and maintain comfort when temperatures fall below -10°F (-23°C).
- Use credit cards for hotel check-in to avoid ATM fees of $3-5 per withdrawal outside major banks. Enable transaction alerts for added security.
- Book hotels 1-3 weeks in advance for rates 10-20% lower than last-minute bookings, except during peak events. Compare cancellation policies before confirming.
- Consider University Avenue for quieter, more affordable stays. Hotels in this corridor often offer reduced rates and less nightlife noise compared to downtown.
- Enjoy complimentary breakfast at many Grand Forks hotels, especially mid-range chains, and save up to $15-20 per day on meal costs.
- Sign up for loyalty programs with major brands like Choice Hotels or Wyndham to access potential upgrades or discounted stays. These chains have a strong local presence.
- Directly confirm accessibility features such as roll-in showers or grab bars when booking, as only newer Grand Forks hotels universally meet ADA standards.
- Select river-view rooms in spring (March-April) at hotels such as Staybridge Suites for seasonal Red River scenery. Verify flood precautions and policies during booking for waterfront locations.
- Hotels near Columbia Road (e.g., La Quinta, Fairfield Inn) offer free parking and are just 5 minutes by car from downtown, avoiding downtown's typical $15 nightly parking fees.
- In older motels along Gateway Drive, check that room heating has been updated, as wall units may be less reliable during sub-zero winter periods (December-February). Request modern HVAC when booking.
- Enroll in Choice or IHG loyalty programs (Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn Express) to qualify for free shuttle service to GFK airport. Non-members may pay $15-20 for a 5-mile (8 km) taxi trip.
- For youth hockey events (January-March), reserve hotels at least 60 days in advance, or consider East Grand Forks, just a 5-minute drive and about 20% cheaper when nearby arenas create demand spikes.
- To minimize overnight truck noise, avoid ground-floor rooms at I-29 exits 140-142 hotels (Super 8, Travelodge). Request upper floors or stay farther south for increased quiet.
- Prepaying for non-refundable rates during UND parent weekends (October, February) at midrange chains like Hyatt Place delivers savings up to 25% versus flexible dates. Midrange chains fill quickly during high demand.
- North Dakota exempts hotel stays of 30 or more consecutive days from the 5% lodging sales tax. Consider extended-stay properties like Candlewood Suites for additional monthly rate discounts.
- Book 3-4 months ahead for fall football season (September-October) or winter festivals (December), as hotel rates commonly surge 30-40% for UND games and city events.
- For GFK flights, skip the $15 daily airport parking fees by staying downtown (e.g., Hotel Donaldson) and using hotel shuttle or rideshare services.
- When visiting Turtle River State Park, verify hotel pet fees. While most properties charge $15-35 per night, some like AmericInn may waive fees for 3 or more night stays. Always check pet policy specifics before arrival.
- When offered Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at check-in, choose to pay in local currency (USD) to avoid a 3-5% markup on your hotel bill.
- Look for free breakfast at budget chains like Comfort Inn & Suites; families can save $15-20 per day on dining.
- Confirm hypoallergenic room availability in advance at hotels like Residence Inn. Some offer rooms with HEPA filters and hypoallergenic bedding for allergy-sensitive guests.
- Withdraw cash from local bank ATMs like Alerus or First International Bank & Trust to pay $2-3 per transaction, avoiding higher out-of-state ATM fees.
- Midweek hotel stays (Sunday-Thursday) at chains like DoubleTree typically cost 10-20% less than weekend rates, except during major events.
- Book university-adjacent hotels 60-90 days before the academic year to secure rates 15-25% lower. Prices increase 20-30% in late August due to move-ins and homecoming.
- Prepay non-refundable rates at chains like Holiday Inn Express or Baymont to avoid $5-12 nightly 'resort' or 'facility' fees, which can equal a 12-18% surcharge.
- Prioritize hotels with central heating control from October to March, when outdoor temperatures average -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F). Older properties may lack in-room thermostats; ask when booking.
- Use ATMs inside credit union branches (Gate City, Divinity) for lower withdrawal fees ($3-5), as convenience stores typically add higher surcharges.
- For winter daylight, request south- or east-facing rooms. Grand Forks averages only 5-7 daylight hours from November through February and north-facing rooms receive little sun.
- Remote work is feasible at top-tier hotels like Hampton Inn, with free Wi-Fi speeds between 25-60 Mbps. Budget motels often average only 8-15 Mbps and congestion peaks in the evening.
- Stay within 1 mile (1.6 km) of DeMers Ave for walkable dining, with 18 sit-down restaurants in an 800 m radius. Just 22% of Grand Forks hotels offer this kind of walkable access.
- Only 38% of Grand Forks hotels confirm ADA compliance online. If step-free access, ramps, or roll-in showers are needed, verify directly with the property; 17 of 45 have fully accessible entrances.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) offered at point-of-sale. Paying in USD prevents a 4-7% markup on your credit card.
- Hotels in FEMA Zone A (1% annual flood risk) along South Washington St. are prone to flooding, especially south of Gateway Drive in April-May. Inquire about the property's flood history and evacuation plans if booking nearby.
- Bring a reusable water bottle, as Grand Forks tap water contains 0.15-0.22 mg/L manganese and many hotels provide filters upon request. Bottled water typically costs $1.50-2.50 per liter locally.
- Stack AAA/CAA and 65+ senior discounts for total savings of 10-15%. Twelve of 15 chain hotels honor dual discounts. Prepaying online can lower rates by another 5%.
