Top Tips
- Book 6-12 weeks ahead of Keeneland’s spring (April) and fall (October) race meets or University of Kentucky home game weekends; hotel inventory is limited and many downtown properties sell out early. Early booking ensures access to preferred hotel options and rates during high-demand event periods.
- Blue Grass Airport (LEX) is about 6 miles (10 km) southeast of downtown Lexington, with off-peak drives typically taking 15-20 minutes. During Keeneland races or UK Athletics events, allow extra time for transfers due to heavier traffic; verify projected wait times during your travel window.
- Hotels near Hamburg Pavilion or I-75 exits often offer lower rates and free parking compared to downtown; expect a 10-20 minute drive (5-8 miles) to reach central attractions. Confirm if your hotel offers shuttle service or local dining discounts to enhance your stay.
- If booking near Rupp Arena, Kroger Field, or Keeneland shuttle stops, request a high-floor or courtyard-facing room to minimize event and street noise. Most large hotels in these areas accommodate noise-sensitive guests upon request; ensure availability while booking.
- Compare hotel calendars with Keeneland race dates and UK Athletics schedules before confirming; prices and availability can shift by as much as 30% during key event weekends. Use flexible dates where possible to access lower rates.
- Rideshare pickups at Blue Grass Airport or downtown Lexington may take 10-25 minutes, especially during morning departures or major events. Uber and Lyft operate citywide; monitor app wait times and confirm the pickup location in advance if you have accessibility needs.
- When booking smaller downtown inns and historic guesthouses, verify step-free or accessible room availability in advance. Many properties in Lexington’s historic district have limited elevator access; confirm details such as ramp entrances or visual alarms if required.
- Lexington’s municipal tap water is safe to drink; hotels typically charge for in-room bottled water instead of offering it complimentary. Ask staff about hotel amenities, as some properties provide filtered water stations or refill options in the lobby to reduce waste.
