Top Tips
- Book 3–5 weeks in advance along the I-70 corridor to save 12–18% over last-minute hotel rates. Use price alerts on major brands like Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express for added price transparency during this period.
- For a quieter night's sleep, choose hotels east of US-27, where properties typically receive 25–30% fewer noise complaints due to lower truck activity. Consider asking the front desk about quiet floor options if you're sensitive to sound.
- If you plan to work remotely, confirm Wi-Fi speed at booking. Local hotels like Fairfield Inn offer a median advertised speed of 100 Mbps, but expect 42–68 Mbps during evening peak. Request a speed test on arrival if fast upload is critical.
- For step-free or accessible rooms in hotels built before 2000, 60% require advance notice. Confirm ramp or elevator access when booking, and be aware that most brands in Richmond support ADA-compliant features when pre-arranged.
- Pay in USD at the front desk to avoid 3.5–5.8% fees from Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). This applies even at international hotel chains, ensuring you keep total control of your travel budget.
- Withdraw cash at local credit union ATMs to save $1 per transaction, with non-member fees averaging $2.50—compared to $3.50 at national bank chains. Many hotels, including the local Best Western, have nearby credit union partners.
- For an eco-conscious stay, consider SpringHill Suites Richmond, the only local hotel with ENERGY STAR certification and 18% lower water use per room night. Enjoy recycling stations and sustainable amenities for a lower environmental impact.
- Budget for the combined 6.5% state and local hotel tax, especially when comparing booking platforms, since some show only pre-tax rates. Many major brands display your full rate breakdown at checkout, so check before you pay.
- Richmond’s tap water is EPA-certified and safe to drink. If you prefer filtered water due to occasional chloramine use, 9 out of 14 local hotels will provide filtered pitchers upon request. Ask at check-in for details.
- Tip $2–$5 per night for housekeeping; local etiquette recognizes this as standard, and higher tips may result in more responsive service for extra requests.
- Avoid stays during Earlham College’s spring (April) and fall (November) breaks if you prefer a quieter lobby, as front desk waits can rise by 18–22 minutes due to check-out surges. Check major school event calendars when planning your trip.
