Top Tips
- Book hotels 21-28 days before your stay to secure rates that are typically 12-18% lower. Corporate block releases often create inventory surges three weeks out, reducing the risk of last-minute price spikes during trade show weeks at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. For high-demand periods, check event calendars to verify release dates and price changes.
- Select hotels on Touhy Avenue west of I-290 to reduce noise levels, as properties within 300 meters east of I-290 report nighttime noise of 68-75 dBA, compared to 52-58 dBA west of the interstate. For quieter stays, consider locations near the Arlington Heights border on the south side of Elk Grove Boulevard, or use review filters for guest noise scores and brand names like Hampton Inn or Courtyard.
- Always confirm if a parking fee applies even when a free airport shuttle is included. About 68% of shuttle-equipped hotels, such as Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express, charge $15 USD per day for parking. Parking rates may change during peak events, so review the hotel's policy and amenities section or use customer service chat to confirm.
- Use O'Hare (ORD) shuttle services primarily between 04:30-06:30 or after 21:00 for faster transit. Shuttle trips to ORD average 18-22 minutes during off-peak periods but can extend to 38-45 minutes during 06:30-09:00 inbound traffic. Times reflect typical door-to-terminal averages; confirm shuttle operator for precise schedules.
- Request rooms away from ice machines and elevator banks to minimize guest noise. Approximately 82% of noise complaints are linked to corridor walls near service zones; ask for a 'quiet wing' or 'end of hall' location. In high-rise hotels, rooms above the third floor often experience less corridor noise.
- Avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC) if offered at the front desk; DCC lets you pay in your home currency but adds a 4-7% markup compared to your bank's rate. Always select 'charge in USD' to avoid extra fees.
- For remote work, verify Wi-Fi speed on arrival by running a speed test, as average speeds in mid-tier hotels are 45-65 Mbps, with a median of 52 Mbps (download). If working after 20:00, speeds may drop by about 30%; request a room near the strongest access point if needed.
- When booking, prioritize properties with LED lighting and keycard energy controls. Around 19% of Elk Grove Village hotels have ENERGY STAR certification, nearly three times the statewide suburban lodging average. Lower-impact properties may offer better indoor air quality and updated in-room controls; brands like Holiday Inn or Hyatt House often meet these standards.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 USD per day, leaving it daily in an envelope or by digital tipping where available. This standard practice helps maintain consistent service; untipped rooms may experience up to 23% slower service response, including skipped linen changes.
- Avoid booking during the DuPage County Fair or IMTS at McCormick Place, as the IMTS (International Manufacturing Technology Show) in September increases hotel demand, raising prices by 35-50% and reducing availability up to 60 days before the event. Also check for other large expos within 10 miles, and use event calendars to plan bookings 10-12 weeks in advance.
- Request step-free access with a roll-in shower if required, as about 41% of rooms labeled ADA compliant do not provide roll-in showers. Only six out of 46 properties meet full step-free criteria. Contact the hotel directly or use the booking platform's accessible features filter to confirm your needs are met.
- Bring a refillable water bottle since tap water is safe but seldom provided in hotel rooms. The municipal supply meets EPA standards, but 70% of hotels do not offer in-room drinking water. Most major chains provide refill stations in the lobby or fitness center; ask at check-in or check the amenities list if you need easy hydration access.
