Location and price
It was a 7 minute drive to downtown Athens (but also near a location that services displaced people so there were a lot of them wandering around.)

Room was clean and not too far from Stadium.
The hotel smelled like a liter box and cat pee. Staff was not friendly and very unprofessional. Food choices were awful. And the whole place in general was not clean. Didn¿t see a single broom or vacuum used anywhere in the hotel the whole stay.

Top Tips
- Book hotels 6-8 weeks before University of Georgia (UGA) football home games. Rates within 1.5 miles of Sanford Stadium can increase 85-120% on game days; reserving in advance usually secures the lowest pre-event rates. Check the official UGA athletics calendar to confirm game dates.
- Prioritize hotels with 24/7 front desk service along West Broad Street. Taxi availability after 22:00 is limited in Athens; properties with round-the-clock staff can help arrange verified rides or ensure late entry, minimizing the risk of being locked out when public transit ends. Travelers with mobility needs should confirm late-night accessibility directly with the property.
- Always verify whether the quoted rate includes the Athens-Clarke County 3% Hotel-Motel Tax. Some smaller inns may initially omit this local tax, which is added to Georgia's 7% state tax. Ask for a full invoice breakdown at booking or check-in.
- For reliable remote work, select hotels offering wired Ethernet connections in rooms. Wi-Fi speeds in older downtown buildings average 25-40 Mbps; wired options, like those at the Holiday Inn Express, average 65 Mbps. Confirm availability of wired connections before arrival as amenities may change.
- Request step-free access explicitly when booking; elevators are not guaranteed in buildings under four stories. About 60% of boutique hotels built before 2000 lack elevators, and even with ADA compliance, ground-floor rooms may require written confirmation. Specify any accessibility needs in writing prior to arrival for confirmation.
- Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at hotel front desks to prevent added fees. Payment terminals at many chain hotels offer DCC with a 3-5% markup; always select 'charge in USD' to avoid overpayment. Confirm with the front desk at check-in if you are unsure about the DCC option.
- Use ATMs inside Wells Fargo on Clayton Street to minimize withdrawal fees. Most downtown ATMs charge a $3.50 fee; this location has no added fee for users of 12 major banks, saving $2-$3 per transaction. Check bank opening hours for access to interior ATMs, especially on weekends.
- Stay west of the M-Loop (Epps Bridge Parkway) for quieter nights. Properties such as MainStay Suites record under 45 dBA at night compared to over 60 dBA near downtown bars. Many hotels in this area also offer more free parking than downtown locations.
- Confirm if tap water is filtered before drinking in hotels built before 1970. Some older properties, especially converted homes, may have lead service lines; management may offer filters on request for longer stays. Ask for in-room bottled water or filters on arrival.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 per night, leaving it daily in the room. This aligns with Athens hospitality norms and often results in more consistent service, rather than tipping once at checkout. Envelopes are often provided in rooms for this purpose, or you can ask at the front desk.
- Select hotels with linen reuse programs during summer drought months (June-August). Athens enforces outdoor watering bans during this time; certified properties, such as Green Key at Best Western, reduce non-essential laundering. Opt in to these programs at check-in or notify staff to participate.
- Stack AAA/CAA discounts with select extended-stay brands for 10-15% off. Red Roof Inn and MainStay Suites honor AAA/CAA discounts, combinable with online bookings; other chains may exclude Athens locations. Present your membership card at check-in and confirm discount eligibility directly with the hotel during booking.
