Top Tips
- Most downtown Stamford hotels are 0.3-0.6 miles (8-15 minutes walking) from the Stamford Transportation Center, where Metro-North express trains reach Grand Central Terminal in 45-55 minutes. This reliable train access can help you avoid the higher cost and potential delays of taxi or ride-share transfers to and from New York City airports. Consider confirming train schedules for early or late arrivals.
- Tuesday through Thursday, downtown Stamford hotels often prioritize corporate bookings; written rate guarantees or non-refundable rates may be cheaper but inflexible. Request written confirmation of your nightly rate and cancellation policy, especially if your stay overlaps with peak business travel days.
- Compare hotel valet parking charges with municipal lots or street meters near Tresser Boulevard and Atlantic Street, which generally cost less. Review the City of Stamford parking map before arrival to select the most cost-effective parking option for your stay.
- Stamford’s tap water is potable and tested to meet Connecticut state standards, so you can refill water bottles at your hotel. Save on bottled water costs and cut waste unless you have a specific taste preference.
- Decline dynamic currency conversion if paying with a non-USD card, choosing USD for billing lets your card issuer handle conversion, avoiding typical 1-3% markup from hotels or terminal providers. Always check your receipt for shown conversion rates before signing.
- Carry small bills for gratuities: US norms suggest $15 per bag for bell staff, $15 per car retrieval for valet parking, and $15 per night for housekeeping (leave daily). If unsure, most hotels display suggested tipping guidance in guest service directories.
- Some older hotels near Atlantic Street and Tresser Boulevard may lack full ADA updates; features like roll-in showers and visual alarms are not guaranteed. Confirm your accessibility needs, such as step-free access or elevator availability, in writing before booking.
- Winter storms (Nor’easters) can disrupt travel on I-95 and Metro-North, allow 1-3 extra hours for trips to New York City or airports during heavy snow. Monitor Metro-North advisories and Connecticut DOT updates for real-time information.
