It was a great location within Avalon! It was a small walking distance from all the shops, restaurants, and the beach! We had the captain?s quarters room, it was a chill spot to relax at. We didn?t use the hot tub but there was one. Great staff!

Roof.top seating and view
Room was very clean, staff was extremely accommodating. Hotel had a cute balcony with seating on top that had a great view of Avalon beach and shops below.
We liked the layout of the rooms. We were there with friends and the courtyard was a great place to gather before heading out. Location is close to town but not right in the middle of the action, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable bed.

The view from the ocean front rooms was nice. If it wasn’t for the view, I would have been disappointed in the room. Did not meet my expectations. I guess we paid for he view

Well,It was one of the cheapest on the island. It reminded me of a studio apartment. The advantage was the kitchenette.

Excellent location, great staff, & great experience!
The staff was wonderful and the view and nostalgia of our honeymoon hotel made it worthwhile though we didn¿t sleep; thin walls, noisy neighbors, constant water running off and on ALL night and smoke detector light flashing overhead all night.
We had the corner king suite and the view from the bedroom and the USABLE wrap around balcony was fantastic. hotel employees were very personable and professional. Loved the transportation to and fro as needed...a wondefful plus.

Top Tips
- Book Catalina Express ferry tickets 2-4 weeks ahead for summer weekends, or 1-3 months earlier for major events like the Fourth of July, to secure your preferred sailing times.
- Time your ferry arrival to align with hotel check-in, as some late ferries can mean waiting for keys due to limited front-desk hours; confirm hotel hours in advance.
- Expect most Avalon attractions to be within a 5-15 minute walk of the pier. If stairs or mobility are a concern, consider a hotel on a specific street, as many properties are located on slopes.
- Request accessible or ground-floor rooms in writing before arrival, as many older Avalon inns have limited step-free options due to pre-ADA construction.
- Add an extra 30-60 minutes for mainland parking, shuttle transfer, and boarding lines at Long Beach or San Pedro ferry terminals to avoid tight transfers.
- Verify hotel Wi-Fi speed before booking if you need reliable connectivity for remote work, as many small Avalon hotels offer consumer-grade Wi-Fi with variable speeds. Consider a cellular hotspot as backup.
- Confirm hotel policies on water conservation, such as towel reuse or limited laundry scheduling, especially during summer or drought, as water-saving measures are common.
- Align your hotel's cancellation policy with Catalina Express ferry policies to reduce risk, as ferry cancellations due to weather can disrupt arrivals and lead to double penalties.
- Book Avalon hotels 3-6 months ahead for summer surges, as prices can rise 50-100% during July-August due to high demand, helping to secure rates 20-40% lower.
- Factor in a 14% transient occupancy tax and potential $15-$20 USD nightly resort fees when budgeting for your Avalon hotel stay; compare platforms for tax-inclusive listings.
- Select central Avalon properties within a 5-10 minute walk of the ferry terminal to minimize reliance on the island's limited shuttle system.
- Expect hotel Wi-Fi speeds to be 10-50 Mbps, but be aware they may drop by 20-50% during peak seasons. Request dedicated workspaces for reliable connectivity if working remotely.
- Adopt water conservation practices, such as 5-minute shower limits, as many hotels enforce these due to Catalina Island's water scarcity. This also supports local sustainability initiatives.
- Book hotels 2-3 months early for peak summer stays, as prices rise 40-60% from June-August and availability drops below 20% due to limited lodging options on Catalina Island.
- Confirm ferry-to-hotel shuttle service before booking, as only a few hotels (e.g., Pavilion Hotel, Hotel Atwater) offer free shuttles, while others may require $15-$15 USD per person taxi rides.
- Prepay resort fees, often $15-$35 USD per night at beachfront properties, to understand what is included (e.g., kayak rentals, bike passes) and avoid unexpected charges at check-in.
- Target midweek stays (Tuesday-Thursday) for potential 30%+ discounts, as weekend rates spike due to higher demand from Los Angeles visitors.
- Request upper-floor rooms to reduce noise, especially on streets like Crescent Avenue where bar crowds can be present until midnight, potentially cutting ambient noise by 70%.
- Bring cash for small inns and eco fees, as some boutique hotels may add a 3% credit card surcharge, and island ATMs charge $15-$15 USD per withdrawal.
- Check for golf cart rental tie-ins with your hotel, as some properties (e.g., The Avalon Inn) include 4-hour cart rentals (approx. $15 USD value), which is useful for hilltop locations.
- Check for free bike rentals, as many hotels offer complimentary bikes (e.g., Hotel at Two Bays) to explore the 3.5-mile island. Verify availability when booking.
- Booking within a 15-minute walk of Main Street gives you direct access to Avalon's 1-mile downtown strip, packed with shops and dining. Family travelers and guests with limited mobility especially benefit from reduced transport needs in this central area.
- Use local ATMs to avoid dynamic currency conversion. ATMs at local banks (e.g., Avalon Branch Bank of America) charge 1.5-3% foreign transaction fees, which are lower than typical DCC rates (often 5-7%).
- Over 20 Avalon hotels offer pet-friendly options, with typical pet fees ranging $15–$50 per stay and some size limits. Service animals are permitted under U.S. ADA rules and are exempt from fees; confirm your hotel's individual policy before booking.
- Confirm Wi-Fi speeds with the hotel for quiet hours (8 AM-10 PM), as average hotel Wi-Fi speeds range from 15-30 Mbps, which may affect remote work.
- Check for allergen-free rooms, as some hotels (e.g., Avalon Hotel & Spa) offer hypoallergenic options. Request this when booking to avoid last-minute changes.
- Stay within a 5-10 minute walk of the ferry terminal, as it is the main transport hub, saving $15-$15 USD on taxi fares per trip.
- Look for sustainable certifications (e.g., LEED) at hotels like the Inn at Two Bays, which indicates water-saving practices important during drought seasons.
- Monitor local event calendars to avoid peak season events like the Avalon Art Walk (3rd Thursday), which can cause hotel rate hikes up to 25%.
- Use USD cash for payments at local businesses to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion fees. Exchange rates at local banks are competitive.
- Check for step-free accessibility before booking, as some hotels (e.g., Avalon Beach Hotel) offer this, ensuring a smoother check-in process.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at all point-of-sale terminals to avoid 3-5% fees on foreign cards, as all Avalon merchants quote prices in USD.
- Choose lodgings within 400 meters of Avalon Harbor to minimize reliance on the Green Route shuttle, which runs every 20 minutes and charges $15-$15 USD per person round-trip for properties uphill.
- Expect Wi-Fi speeds of 25-50 Mbps, but be aware that average upload speeds are 8-12 Mbps, making most inns unsuitable for video conferencing. Only 3 properties advertise business-grade connectivity.
- Use public water fill stations or bottled water instead of tap water, as non-potable signage is common island-wide due to drought conditions limiting desalination output.
- Be aware of a mandatory 14.75% Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) on all stays, which adds $44.25 USD to a $300 USD per night stay.
- Verify step-free access explicitly before booking, as less than 15% of lodgings are ADA-compliant, and even 'accessible' rooms may require navigating curbs or boardwalks.
- Use electric shuttles after 9 PM, as gas-powered vehicles are banned, but electric shuttles run on a reduced frequency (every 30 minutes) serving key hotels.
- Avoid July 4th week, as rates spike 60-75% and bookings require 6+ months lead time due to fireworks drawing over 10,000 visitors.
- Choose hotels offering towel reuse to help save resources, as laundering accounts for 18% of local non-potable water use and reduces your carbon footprint by about 3.5 kg CO₂ per week. Some properties also run guest sustainability challenges, so ask on check-in for ways to participate.
- Confirm check-in time, as early access is rare due to goods arriving via daily barge at 10 AM, which can delay housekeeping and affect 30% of check-ins before 4 PM.
- Bring cash for the $15 per person entry fee at Descanso Beach Club, as on-island network outages affect 1 in 5 card transactions. Some hotels can charge club entry to your room account - ask at your front desk to simplify beach access.
